Anti-China protests held in Tokyo

Protesters shout slogans during an anti-China rally in Tokyo on Saturday. Thousands of Japanese nationalists demonstrated against China and Tokyo’s handling of a territorial dispute. The sign held by the child at left reads: “We don’t want Chinese products until we win.”

TOKYO — More than 3,000 Japanese staged an anti-China demonstration in Tokyo Saturday amid a diplomatic row between the two Asian powers.

The protesters, led by conservative groups, demanded China give up its claim to a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea. Police said the demonstration was peaceful.

Waving Japanese flags, the demonstrators held banners reading “Condemn China’s militaristic hegemony over Asia” and “Senkaku islands are Japanese territories.”

China and Japan have locked horns over the sovereignty of small islands called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. The islands are controlled by Tokyo but also claimed by Beijing.

The long-running dispute over the islands flared after a September collision between Japanese patrol vessels and a Chinese fishing boat. The Chinese boat captain was arrested but later released.

The standoff sparked anti-Japan rallies in several Chinese cities.

Saturday’s anti-China protest in the Japanese capital came a day after Japan launched a probe into the possible leak of a video showing the collision. The video first appeared on YouTube on Friday, and was widely picked up by Japanese television networks.

Japanese media reported that several government sources had confirmed the authenticity of the video. But coast guard spokesman Daisuke Hirasawa declined to confirm the reports Saturday.

“We are in the middle of investigation. We cannot give any information at this point,” he said.

The video showed a ship bumping a Japanese vessel, while sirens wailed in the background and the Japanese crew shouted orders for the ship to stop.

It raised concerns of rekindled tensions ahead of an international summit in Japan next week. Tokyo hopes to have a meeting with China’s leader on the sidelines of the summit.

After the September collision, China demanded an apology and compensation, but Tokyo countered by demanding that Beijing pay for damage to the patrol boats.

“We don’t want Chinese products until we win.”

Yes, because that has always worked before.

Looks like I'll be entering a fun environment if I get accepted into the JET Program.

Hey! How is your application process going so far?
rainbow_yarn 8th-Nov-2010 03:33 am (UTC)
Almost done, actually, I just need to collect a few things tomorrow to be ready. I'm almost surprised I got myself this far. You?
hola_meg_a_cola 8th-Nov-2010 03:37 am (UTC)
I'm barely halfway done lol. I've been rewriting my SOP, I requested some of my transcripts, and I'm working on getting my references. It's been really difficult applying while I have so many things due for school. I haven't even started the application.

How long did the application take you? And what about that confirmation of graduation letter? I'm still in school, and they won't write me one since they ~can't confirm I will graduate in the spring.
rainbow_yarn 8th-Nov-2010 03:44 am (UTC)
Oh no! Good luck, then! Yeah, I wrote my essay this weekend and sat with my sister on the phone for about an hour while she told me what she didn't like about it. D= I had a relatively easy semester up till now, and suddenly I've got a ton of work to do all by next week and the end of the semester, so I'm really glad I got a jump start on it. This Jet process is grueling, though; I can imagine you'd be pretty swamped. =(

The app... less than taking a lot of time, I just got concerned about thinking of "leadership positions" I might have had, or at least anything that might count as a leadership position--things like that just got me hung up. I still need to print mine off. You can do it in a few hours, I'd say, though.

I was worried about the confirmation letter at first, but since last week I just filed my Intent to Graduate after registering for spring classes, they were able to write a letter for me. Have you registered yet?

I'm actually going to my department tomorrow to get busy registering (and where I'm going to ask if they can write my second recommendation lol.) I've heard that JET really doesn't care where you get your letter to confirm if you're graduating, but I'll stop by my registrar tomorrow and ask them. My professor who is writing me one said I have a pretty good chance in getting in, so I'm a little more confident about my chances.

The only other thing I'm worried about is that I need to prove my residency. Which is not a problem, but my mom has my passport and everything else locked up in a safety deposit box, and she is not keen on me going to teach abroad. I'm going to try to get my dad to convince her though lol

Get it done! I think that's the kind of stuff the registrar needs to know, so if you get that information in, you should be fine.

Hahaha, I've never heard that one before! I hope your mom relents! Good luck!

Thanks! Here's to the both of us getting into JET!

JET Program! That's something I want to do when I graduate, but I wonder if it'll still be around in two to three years...

But this sort of riot really depends on where you are situated in Japan. I'm of Chinese heritage myself (although I consider myself Canadian before Chinese), but I've had nothing but good experiences since coming to Japan! :)

Same
I've wanted to do the JET scheme for like 5 years now
If it's not about when I graduate in 2 years I'm gonna cut a bitch!

I don't see why it wouldn't be. I know they want to get rid of it, but as China becomes more of a dominant player, the JET Program will prove to be a lucrative soft power. However, there is the chance that, knowing the Japanese, they will blow it.

That's good to here! My friends loved being in Japan, but they were there as students, so they had an entirely different experience.

Is it perhaps costing too much to keep it up too? :(

I'm from the UK so I dunno what equivalent there is for Europe.

ohay fellow JET applicant. How goes your app?
hola_meg_a_cola 8th-Nov-2010 01:49 pm (UTC)
Slow moving lol. I'm still getting everything together and I haven't even begun the application. It's been really hard since I have so much going on with school. But I feel confident that I'll have everything sent out before the due date :)

How is your application process? Hopefully, it's better than mine!
