Rumours of break-up between television dramas and Johnny's??

Starring dramas fall to zero! Can the break-up between the television drama world and Johnny's be stopped!?

Having come into July, many new television dramas have started, but dramas starring Johnny's talent are creeping towards zero.

"Monday at 9 golden drama 『Zenkai Girl』(Fuji TV) stars NEWS's Nishikido Ryo, 『Bull Doctor』 (NTV) stars SMAP's Inagaki Goro and there are many others in supporting roles, but right now there are no cool protaganists played by Johnny's. Specifically, Inagaki Goro gained recognition as a supporting role in the movie,『13 Assassins』and seems to have since switched strategies toward supporting roles, with him gaining attention in 『Bull Doctor』," (Sport Journalist) .

This year's hot spring dramas had three starring members of Johnny's: Monday at 9 golden drama 『Shiawase ni narou yo』 (Fuji TV) starring SMAP's Katori Shingo, Nishikido Ryo's 『Inu wo kau to iu koto』 (Asahi TV), and 『Koukousei Restaurant』 (NTV) starring TOKIO's Matsuoka Masahiro, but none of these achieved high viewership ratings.

"Katori's drama is the second Monday at 9 golden time drama in history to receive single-digit ratings, with an average viewership rating of 11.7% (Video Research/Kanto Region). Nishikido's dog drama was originally supposed to include child actor prodigy Ashida Mana, but she was offered the second alternative to star in Fuji TV's 『Marumo no Okite』 and backed out at the last minute, leaving them with an average rating of 8.5%. Most likely if Ashida had starred in the Asahi TV drama, she would not have received her big break. Matsuoka's drama was based off a true story, but the story was too plain and ended off with single ratings and an average rating of 10.7%", (Television Magazine Writer).

It seems that TV stations are moving from being "Johnny's dependent" to "Johnny's break-up", and apparently the turning point was last year's summer dramas.

Because typically drama casting schedules are decided a year in advance, this year's summer drama casts should have been decided in the autumn of last year. Thus the casting reflects the results of last year's summer dramas. Dramas starring Johnny's talent were three, including Arashi's Matsumoto Jun in Monday at 9 golden drama 『Natsu no koi wa nijiiro ni kagayaku』 (Fuji TV), TOKIO's Nagase Tomoya in 『Unubore Deka』 (TBS), Shonentai's Higashiyama Noriyuki in 『GM Odore Doctor』. Although there were no dramas starring members of SMAP, expetations were high with the combined power of Arashi, TOKIO and Shonentai. However, despite Arashi being at the peak of their popularity, Matsumoto's drama only received an average rating of 12.3%. Nagase's drama had great expectations with a script written by Kudou Kankurou, but all but the first episode failed to go beyond single digits, earning an average rating of 8.0%. Higashiyama, at the time, was gaining lots of attention  with his marriage to actress Kimura Yoshino but the weak second half was barraged by single digit ratings and ended with an average rating of 10.0%. This result caused the stations to apparently realize that "we can't get ratings just by using Johnny's".  It used to be that when Johnny's drama ratings received bad ratings, the production team would furiously blame the agency. This became troublesome, so they apparently decided that it would be more sensible to have them star in an important role rather than the starring one", (Television Official).

Starting in October, TBS will celebrate its 60th anniversary by airing the drama 『Nankyoku Tairiku ~Kami no ryouiki ni idonda otoko to inu no monogatari~』[Antarctica ~The story of the man and dogs who challenged God's territory~]  starring KimuTaku but "ratings are expected to reach over 30%. Though nothing is being heard about the future for drama's starring anyone other than KimuTaku" (Same as above) only to say that, it seems likely that future Johnny's starring roles may come to only include KimuTaku.

I'm dying at the thought of not seeing any of my beloved boys in leading roles, but I have to say this wouldn't surprise me in the least if it were true (Regardless of the source >.> ). Ratings for dramas with Johnny's boys have not pulled in the ratings they once did. Personally, I think this is the fault of the production team (people won't watch it if it sucks!!) and there's also probably some other factors involved, including the increased use of PVR. But it also shows that Johnny's power isn't as strong as it once was. No longer can the presence of a Johnny's boy make even a crappy drama popular.
P.S. Anyone got a good image or gif for this post? It's 4:30am and I'm fresh out of ideas.

P.P.S. K8 fans, don't brick me for the fact that the article listed Ryo-kun as only a member of NewS, not Kanjani 8. I'm innocent. *runs*

Mh, you might be right. I usually don't care for the plot summaries and then skip his dramas, but I might have to give it another shot. Any special recommendation? :)

Old(er) dramas like:
Long Vacation --> as aspiring pianist, with a love story twist.
Good Luck --> a co-pilot who is struggling to be a chief pilot
Pride --> a hockey player. Leader of the team.
Engine --> a car racer (?)
Beautiful Life --> a hair-dresser against all odds, with a sweet love story. Nemureru Mori (Sleeping Forest)--> a mysterious guy. Got good reviews.

I think he's my first JE love...though I wasn't aware that he's in JE before XD and I know him mostly because of his dramas. Until Nino came along :P
fog_dancer 18th-Jul-2011 08:11 pm (UTC)
Nino slowly creeps up on people, I understand you *nods* XD

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I'll check them out when I have a free day next. <3

What's your type of drama? I can give you a specifc Kimura drama based on the drama/s you liked. This is to prevent me from listing down most of his dramas. I almost did; just deleted the entire paragraph for fear of scaring you).

The ones that hold a special place in my heart are "HERO", "Pride", and "Long Vacation". These were the ones that turned me into a believer. XD "HERO" and "Long Vacation" are legends (two of the 30% rated dramas you mentioned), while "Pride" is an understated fan favorite, especially for ren'ai fans.

I like either very weird/quirky dramas like Kimi wa Petto or "quiet" ones. I remember one with nino (can't name the title...tip of my tongue case) where he was a son estranged from his father, and he was on his way to become a potter. Loved that one.
flashylicious 18th-Jul-2011 05:38 pm (UTC)
you mean yasashii jikan with nagasawa masami?
most of kimutaku's dramas has either fast tempos or those that will make your heart race
fog_dancer 18th-Jul-2011 08:12 pm (UTC)
Yes!! I loved it. It was weird and sad and developed very slowly. I enjoyed it, but I was in a melancholic mood when I watched it and it fit perfectly. :)
zheinpathos 18th-Jul-2011 05:51 pm (UTC)
IA with flashylicious--most of them are fast-paced or are "grand" for lack of a better word. ^^;; "Karei-naru Ichizoku" isn't "quiet" in any sense of the word, but it does have the estranged son theme, except on a much grander scale XD

"HERO"'s pretty quirky imo (the supporting cast and the script are hilarious); so is "CHANGE" if you take it simply as a political fairy tale.
fog_dancer 18th-Jul-2011 08:18 pm (UTC)
Thank you.

I think I can deal with political fairy tales. :)

I haven't seen the Nino-potter one so I can't use it as a reference (though I love Kimi wa Petto ♥). I think of Beautiful Life as being a quieter, bittersweet love story, as opposed to his more intense/fast-paced dramas. If you like period stories, his movie "Bushi no Ichibun" is another quiet but good one. And I agree with HERO being in the quirky category/CHANGE being fun if you don't take it seriously. MR.BRAIN might qualify too -- that drama is a mix of Really Weird/Quirky/Amusing + Serious Crime-Solving, with some great guests to boot.

I personally really enjoy his acting/charisma, and I love pretty much any genre if the story is well-done, so based on my own preferences, I could rec basically his whole filmography and mean it (with the exception of TsukiKoi and Asunaro Hakusho, which were letdowns :X). I didn't understand the hype until almost two years ago when I decided to actually try watching things he's in, and he hooked me instantly. CHANGE was my first Kimura drama, despite not being one of the really popular ones. It has a great cast (Fukatsu Eri and Abe Hiroshi are in it with him -- Terao Akira is amazing too, though I don't think he's as well-known), and even if it is not something that would really happen (xD), I found it enjoyable.

Anyway, I hope you find one that suits your interests, and if you ever want to give some of the others a chance, I highly recommend all the other recs that have been made in your thread. ♥

Fellow kimi-wa-petto-fan!! Yay! :D I even got a friend to watch it with me and loved it...such a cute little drama.

I'll check out beautiful life and bushi no ichibun next and save Hero for the time I need a quirky peek-me-up.

Thank you so much for the recs. I love getting personal feedback. :) Oh and Abe Hiroshi is awesome too...Must add Change to the list as well...
showyoursmile 18th-Jul-2011 08:29 pm (UTC)
It really is adorable. It's one of the first I saw when I was first getting into JE/jdramas, but it's still among my favorites. Momo is adorable, and I love older woman/younger man stories. (Speaking of which, if the older woman/younger man thing appeals to you in general, Kimura's Long Vacation has that, as an extra rec!) KwP is among the dramas I need to rewatch at some point. It's been a while. <3

Sounds like a good plan! I hope you enjoy them. :)

No problem at all, though. I love sharing & receiving recs, too. ♥ Lol lol and Abe Hiroshi is so amusing in CHANGE -- I adore his character, and the interactions between his and Kimura's character are gold.

A Million Stars Falling from the Sky is a must-see. It's depressing as fuck though.
ocha_suki 18th-Jul-2011 05:11 pm (UTC)
i wonder why i can't stand to watch this drama though!
stopped at ep.2 and neva have a plan to continue it :p
it just same old brand new boring & lame drama's plot for me...
aside hero & pride, i love to watch kareinaru ichizoku, but i guess no one cares about this drama LOL
zheinpathos 18th-Jul-2011 05:59 pm (UTC)
It does start slow. Shit starts to get better (or worse, depending if you're the character) by mid-series and blows up in everyone's faces (in a good fucked-up way) by the end. XD
systemaoh 18th-Jul-2011 07:39 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Mil Stars is a slow burn and a little dark but it rewards those who stick with it. I gave it a chance coz of many recommendations, and now it's one of my fave dramas. We rarely see writing this good any more. :)
showyoursmile 18th-Jul-2011 08:12 pm (UTC)
I agree that with the others that it picks up as the drama progresses and gets REALLY good as all the pieces fall into place. In my opinion, it's far from being your standard drama -- intense and twisted and wonderful. <3

I agree that Karei naru Ichizoku is AMAZING, though. It's one of his best performances if not his best, and it makes me cry every time. I love it.
fog_dancer 18th-Jul-2011 08:32 pm (UTC)
So many votes for Karei naru Ichizoku... :) I'll go check it out when I'll have some free time.

<3 Thanks for the rec.
nene718 18th-Jul-2011 08:41 pm (UTC)
iirc it started off slow for me, but then I got hooked. But everyone's different.
jadeswallow 18th-Jul-2011 03:12 pm (UTC)
+ Kimutaku can act. As in good acting and not because I'm biased. I'd even say he's better than Nino. Neen was overrated sometimes because Hollywood critics acknowledged him, only after that Japanese reporters/critics start 'worshipping' his acting. Pity Kimutaku never have a chance to prove himself to Hollywood yet.

If you can find Karei Noru Ichizoku, that drama change my opinion of Kimutaku forever. He was splendid there.
zheinpathos 18th-Jul-2011 05:57 pm (UTC)
THIS. "I Come With the Rain" had horrible writing despite the amazing Asian cast plus what's-his-name, so it couldn't be his Hollywood break.
fog_dancer 18th-Jul-2011 08:33 pm (UTC)
I'll try to find it. ^.^ Thanks!
asth77 18th-Jul-2011 07:43 pm (UTC)
Karei naru Ichizoku is his best performance imo. If you try, please don't stop at the first ep. Also I think it's always better to start with Pride. KimuTaku built a very solid career thanks to his skills and the dramas in which he's played. It's not a flawless way, but there are a lot of great dramas. That's why poeple expect to watch something interesting when they see KimuTaku's name on the list of actors.
