It was announced at a press conference on November 5th (Tokyo time) that singer-songwriter Gackt will be taking on his fourth major acting role, this time in a stage production.
Gackt will become the sixth actor to portray Nemuri Kyoshiro, the controversial main character of Renzaburo Shibata’s Full Moon Swordsman series (Better known as the Sleepy Eyes of Death series in the English speaking world); a half Portuguese, half Japanese ronin who was the product of a rape that took place during a satanic black mass.
The play is set to premier in May of 2010, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the death of Raizo Ichikawa, who portrayed the same character in a series of 12 films from 1963 to 1969 and became the actor synonymous with the role. Ichikawa died prematurely in 1969 at the age of 37, the same age at which Gackt (likely not by coincidence) will premier as the character.
Gackt (36) publicly announced his age for the first time at the press conference, stating that he would “be turning 37 in 2010” and confirming his long rumored 1973 date of birth.
