Arama They Didn't

12:08 am - 03/18/2012

Since the mid-2000s, Arashi has sprung into the top artist seat, but since last year, their popularity has started to see gloom.

Arashi up to 2010 was filled with vigor. In the 2009 Oricon Yearly Ranking they held the Top 3 spots alone, and the next year sucessfully held first place on the same ranking, winning over AKB48. It was thought “Arashi’s Era” would continue. However, in the same ranking in 2011, in the Top 10 their 35th single “Lotus” took 6th place, and their 36th single “Meikyuu Love Song” took 7th.

Furthermore, Arashi has seen a decline in variety show viewership ratings. “Himitsu No Arashi-chan”, for example, has begun to stand out for making 10% ratings. Internet fans have stated “Arashi’s variety shows are just like other programs, so I’m tired of it,” or “They appear too much in the media, so I don’t have the willpower to search them out now.”

i find this lulzy myselfCollapse )

imo this article comes at a really nice time now that they've lit up tokyo tower and had their best single sale in a while

yeah, sure, whatever.

but truthfully, HnA is getting pretty boring.
sapphirehyeran 18th-Mar-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
I don't see the point of this article, we don't on the same planet right?
"Arashi has finally reached their peak"
what are you really talking about?
I've been following Arashi for ten years abd they've never been so popular than these days.
Your post is INVALID!
asaphira_sachi 18th-Mar-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
even new groups like Kis-My-Ft2, Sexy Zone, or A.B.C.-Z have become a topic.

Good job cyzo pointing out 101 of what an idol agency does - create new groups and then promote them like no tomorrow.

Oh and since OP mentioned the Arashified tower.

haaaaa. i agree, sho-chan. love the face.
rosemaine 18th-Mar-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
Hna is NOT that boring and its NOT Arashi's fault, they still managed to make the show interesting most of the time. I mean, replace someone else as the host of the show and you will see WHERE is the problem.

I mean, replace someone else as the host of the show and you will see WHERE is the problem.

People keep forgetting Othello's personal circumstances are most likely the biggest factors for the format change.
urufuchinen 18th-Mar-2012 05:06 am (UTC)
i don't enjoy HnA anymore like i used to. I MISS VIP ROOM AND I MISS NAKAJIMA TOMOKO-SAN.

but has they reached their peak? i don't think so.
well, let's see.
aibada 18th-Mar-2012 05:15 am (UTC)
I hope this is true, I'm waiting for KAT-TUN's revival
Shes Janet 18th-Mar-2012 09:19 am (UTC)
a kat-tun & news rejuvenation is definitely needed. they've just been coasting along for the past couple years.
squallina 18th-Mar-2012 05:20 am (UTC)
Correction: Cyzo is BS. It's what they do.
kiki_megami 18th-Mar-2012 05:25 am (UTC)
Uhm, last time I checked, their name is ARASHI. Not SMAP, or Sexy Zone, or A.B.C-Z. They are not trying to be anybody but themselves. And as far as I am concerned, Arashi don't aim to be at the top of the charts, they aim to touch their fans with their music. I don't care if Arashi's single comes dead last in the charts, I'll still love them forever. C:

Arashi's anxiety as they fall from their peak

Nah, they probably even give less of a *beep* than the fanbase. They're happy as long as they don't have empty seats at concerts. In fact it makes them so happy it can bring them to tears.

Article also fails to mention that the songs which scored Best 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 of 2011 were all by AKB48. Wouldn't that technically mean that if AKB48 didn't exist, Arashi would have taken out the top two singles in 2011 as well? So *shrug* (AKB queens are mighty fine competition IMO!)

Feel free to keep on hating on Arashi, Cyzo. We'll just keep laughing at you.

Also, quick question to Arashi fans. I don't like MMA and I don't like what HnA has turned into because I don't like watching Arashi running around turning into servants for people (even very nice, kind, talented, or beautiful people.) Arashi fans swear by MMA, yet people are starting to realize how boring HnA is. What's the deal?
cheerytoast 18th-Mar-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
LOL, why do people keep bringing up the Tokyo Tower lighting like it's something to be proud of? It's cool, but it's pure business promotion. Shell out enough money and you can get your colors lighted too.

Anyway, the article has a good point. Arashi is strong as a group, but don't stand out or have as much influence individually. They are getting to the age where they can't ride on a cutesy image anymore. They are at the peak of their popularity and yet the quality of their works has dropped to mediocre. I'm afraid it's going to stay that way because they don't have to try as hard to be successful.

I say kill their current shows and bring back the ones that made them so interesting in the first place.
corlee1289 18th-Mar-2012 06:06 am (UTC)
Oh gawd!

I severely miss the crack that was on Arashi no Shukudai-kun!!
scubajr 18th-Mar-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
I agree with OP's comment. In terms of sales, AKB is just doing ridiculously well.
arashieng 18th-Mar-2012 05:42 am (UTC)
I have so many things to say...

First of all, this is Cyzo. According to Japanese fans, all they write are rumors and gossips...articles that get the people going crazy and the stupid people believing.

Secondly, Arashi themselves do not care for popularity. I'm sure Johnny-san or people around them want them to be the top for business reasons, but the members continually say that they don't need that. They're just grateful to be able to work.

Thirdly, as for 2011 sales, the reason why they were 6th and 7th was because 1~5 was occupied by AKB48. Seriously, Arashi's CD sales are amazing and their latest single is one of the best in a while for them. AKB48 is the only one beating them in sales. But again, Arashi does not care. Just listen to "Fight Song". "Others are others, you are you. The point when you start comparing is when you lose." Yeah, Arashi wrote that.

I do understand with their shows because HnA is fucking boring and AniS gets repetitive too. Their shows are so's because of the system of call a guest over because they have to promote their drama or movie or play or book or music or whatever. That can't be helped, but going back to the crazy midnight shows like CxDxG or AnS where they do awesome shit would really bring out their true personalities. I feel like they are being restrained and held back because they have to do their job inside a set of rules and it limits them. It's understandable because right now they are really popular and have a lot of influence towards the public so they have to be careful of what they can do. Me as a fan, I enjoy watching them 24/7, but they are still over-worked. Sho lost a lot of weight, Jun and Ohno came down with a cold, and it's freaking allergy season for Nino and Aiba (lol). Sometimes I wish the companies could give them a break. For that matter, have the 5 of them go on vacation and secretly film them! Then you can see their personalities and they are haveing a break while the companies get a hilarious show. xD

Anyways, Arashians, don't be disturbed by the article. We aren't weak, and neither is Arashi! All we have to remember is that no matter what happens to Arashi, we're sticking with them forever. I thought we already took an oath for this, didn't we? ^^
yana0201 18th-Mar-2012 05:52 am (UTC)
very well said *nods*
hirogime 18th-Mar-2012 05:46 am (UTC)
Hey now,
I think fans are totally ready to face the faded rainbow.
I don't really care though, whether Arashi is popular or not. When some people forget about them, new fans would come to fill in the space.
buyme_arashi 18th-Mar-2012 07:11 am (UTC)
and if they are losing fans, more opportunity for us the loyal fans, to get a chance at ticket ballots!
yume_no_yousei 18th-Mar-2012 05:59 am (UTC)
Even if they're going downhill from here, why are they still being compared to SMAP? It would've made more sense to compare them with AKB since they're the only ones topping Arashi in the charts.
kawaii_neko23 18th-Mar-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
They are still being compared to Smap because even though AKB sells a lot they are a female idol group that works on a completely different dynamic (elections, never know what girl will be in the top spot, constant changes) whereas Smap has been around for twenty years, still sell albums, sell out concerts and gets pretty high ratings for their variety show and dramas. Smap is pretty much what ever male idol group wants to achieve, longevity.
captxfizz 18th-Mar-2012 06:00 am (UTC)
I definitely don't agree about the personality part...
I've shown a few of their shows to my friends and they find the members fun to watch, even when they have close to no knowledge about the guys. Even a non-fan could see that those 5 have qualities that can keep you hooked.
modifeyes 18th-Mar-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
ngl, their intense promotions over the past 3~4 years feel like a sugar rush; so much of them at once. and honestly, yeah, I can see them starting to crash. they're overpromoting them - Hana Arashi, Tokyo Tower, members being casted in dramas every season, new singles corresponding with said dramas, etc. take it easy. there is a such thing as too much.
plus HnA's reformatting isn't working out, VSA is so repetitive that it's almost annoying, and Shiyagare is so meh. I agree with what a lot of people are saying here - they should return to their roots, bring back the themes from their old shows, and just let them be themselves. normal people doing abnormal, exciting, and stupid things. that alone, I'm sure, would be able to keep them afloat in this industry for years to come.
leicee 18th-Mar-2012 06:13 am (UTC)
lol arashi fans. so touchy when it comes to smap.

you just know sexy zone is comin' at you and stealin' the spotlight.

and nicely paid advertisement they got goin on with the tower.

squallina 18th-Mar-2012 06:25 am (UTC)

SMAP are awesome BTW. Just saying.
blackdevil2722 18th-Mar-2012 06:14 am (UTC)
Other than AKB, Arashi is still the top-selling male idol group. There's the AKB boom now, with their sister groups SKE/NMB > JE's newer groups like Kis-My-Ft2, Sexy Zone, or A.B.C.-Z (at least sales-wise). I say JE just needs to re-strategize. Arashi aren't SMAP & doesn't need to become like their senpais: they just need to be promoted properly so their dorky personalities continue to shine through.

In fact the whole of JE has been declining in terms of popularity & sales. I'm a total JE fan but if they keep marketing themselves the way they're doing since forever, our favourite JE groups will find it harder & harder to top over AKB/Korean groups. Get a YT channel for each of your artists, let them get Twitters or Ameba blogs or w/e: then maybe more people will start getting interested in them.
taylorniw 18th-Mar-2012 06:24 am (UTC)
They really don't need a new strategy. Generally, female idol groups always end up losing a lot of their popularity and never remain on top for more than a few years. As for kpop groups, they're only a problem as long as hallyu is big in Japan. It has all the makings of a trend.
kawaiiohno 18th-Mar-2012 06:20 am (UTC)
i'm not saddened about this article, i'm more saddened by arashians complaing about arashi shows being boring... sure Hna wasn't the same as before, but and only 2 members appear every week, but you know, even if its boring, or i'm not interested with the guest, i still watch it. why you may ask? because just seeing arashi smiling, having fun and doing their best is enough for me. that's how i support them... (i'm not saying you guys don't support them, but at least try to be see the good side of their shows)
exdream1999 18th-Mar-2012 06:28 am (UTC)
I find it funny how much shit HnA gets, when everyone shits themselves over Mannequin 5.

Like, really guys?

Also, Arashi really is losing popularity, so much so that have to open up voting for M5 for guys in order to keep the numbers up!! /obvious sarcasm

(I love all their shows, but then again, I watch a lot of other Japanese variety shows and honestly Arashi's in nowhere close to being the most boring/laziest in terms of production.)
love323able 18th-Mar-2012 06:25 am (UTC)
So albums and DVDs dont mean anything lol they also forgot AniS and VSA.

Let the Arashi era continue XD
exdream1999 18th-Mar-2012 06:33 am (UTC)

Sure, they had the #6&7 singles, but had the #1 album and the #1&2 Tour DVDs.

And, really, I'm pretty sure they sell more copies of their tours DVDs than some of their singles.
kurosaki91 18th-Mar-2012 06:26 am (UTC)
If the decline means I can get a concert ticket easily, well then by all means... HAHAHA
