Results of the 2012 February ‘TV Celebrity Image Survey’ revealed

Earlier this week, Video Research Ltd. released the results of their influential ‘TV Celebrity Image Survey‘, which is conducted twice a year (February & August).

Aside from researching the official TV audience ratings, Video Research Ltd. often conducts image and popularity surveys related to various topics concerning people, products, and characters appearing on TV and radio. One of those surveys is the well-known ‘TV Celebrity Image Survey’, which analyzes the awareness, popularity and image of 1,000 celebrities that regularly appear on TV. The February 2012 ranking marks the 79th time that they’ve conducted this particular survey.

The results can be very influential, as industry officials often include this data when deciding the cast of new shows, dramas/movies, and commercials. While the detailed information only is available for their official partners, such as all the TV networks, they always release the top 50 of the general popularity ranking to the public. The popularity rating displays how many of the 1,130 people (565 for the male ranking, 565 for the female ranking) who took part in this survey and whether they chose “I like him/her a lot” or “I like him/her a little” for the respective person.

This time actor Abe Hiroshi came out on top of the male ranking. He already had been within the top 3 for the previous two rankings released in 2011 and the last time he actually topped the ranking was in the August ranking of 2010. Fellow actor Watanabe Ken also reached a new record high, but unfortunately he still barely missed a place inside the top 10. Child actor Suzuki Fuku was included in the survey for the first time and already became the 23rd most popular male celebrity on TV.

In the female ranking, figure skater Asada Mao once again claimed the top position after dropping out of the top 5 in the August ranking of 2011. She also topped the ranking in the previous February ranking. In second and third place ranked the actresses Ayase Haruka (last time: 4th) and Amami Yuki (last time: 2nd). A big jump towards the upper ranking was achieved by actress Aragaki Yui, who improved herself by six ranks and entered the top 10 for the first time in her career. One of Japan’s best female football players, Sawa Homare, also ranked inside the top 10, even though this is the first time she was included in the survey.

You can check out the male and female top 50 below!

awww that's so sad Jun is the only one who isn't there.. I'm pretty surprised that Aiba ranked highest among the other 4 xD lolz and wow Aiba, Sho and Ohno ranked higher than Kimutaku
masaki82 29th-Mar-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
That's what I notice too! Even thought Jun-kun had Lucky Seven and he was great in it too. I'm so proud of Aiba-chan, being ranked right after Shimura-san and being first in Arashi. I think it's because of that Animal Documentary movie, it's pretty educational :D
maytevb 30th-Mar-2012 01:45 am (UTC)
IA. I'm so proud of him too :D
wayof_life 30th-Mar-2012 03:25 am (UTC)
I think it's highly because of Shimura Doubutsuen and also he has that very pleasant innocent image so girls and guys can't hate him.

For MatsuJun, some people/guys will feel threatened by him (like they feel that he raised the hurdle for some aspect) or too "kira kira", out of reach, so people don't have that I-can-get-close-to-him-easily impression to vote for him >_< Same goes to Sho-chan, 'cos he's too "perfect" in many aspects people wish to be, so people will go like "urgh, I don't like him, too perfect, too far away!"
nekobot01 29th-Mar-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
I was just thinking the same thing!!! XD
dyan1219 30th-Mar-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
I was surprised too! But if we think about it, Aiba really is for variety shows. He brings the energy, and it's just not the same atmosphere without him <3

xlalalala 29th-Mar-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
very solid n valid list.
Abe Hiroshi, Sanma... haha aiba is so near shimura ken... surpassing the master soon?
Ayase Haruka, Amami Yuki, Matsushima Nanako, Takeuchi Yuko, Kanno Miho... no akb48 members thank goodness (i still like them but in terms of acting long way to go).
sporkof_doom 29th-Mar-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Whoa Aiba! :)</p>

And just yesterday I read a post on Tumblr predicting that this will be the year for Aiba. :D

sporkof_doom 29th-Mar-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
Also, correct me if I'm wrong but are there no AKB members on the women's list? A little surprising, since they're everywhere right now. :/
flashylicious 30th-Mar-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
propaganda mass media doesn't necessary equate with popularity
wayof_life 30th-Mar-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
THIS. Rather, it's because their faces are spammed everywhere, it backfires and in the end, people don't like them as much >_
mjspice 30th-Mar-2012 10:45 am (UTC)
Amen!
masaki82 30th-Mar-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
I hoping that this year will be for Aiba-chan, he deserves it. He's been supporting the others for such a long time and I think now is the best time to stand up and have some time in the spotlight. I'm praying that he will one of the GQ men of the year :DDD
rosemaine 30th-Mar-2012 10:22 am (UTC)
And just yesterday I read a post on Tumblr predicting that this will be the year for Aiba. :D

please let it be true :D

botanbutton 29th-Mar-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
I'm surprised by this list a little! Of course there are names I knew would be there. (Kimutaku, Beat Takeshi, Tokoro George, Asada Mao, etc.) but seeing the likes of Aiba or KARA or Harisenbon, I'm pretty impressed. I don't know what last year looked like but wow.
claire0814 30th-Mar-2012 12:51 am (UTC)
Aiba is in the list these past surveys , aug 2011 #21, Feb 2011 #33, aug 2010 #23 .... but what is the difference of this survey to the survey found in http://www.talentsearch.jp/?

http://www.videor.co.jp/data/member/talent_man/index8.htm#2011

abe hiroshi will always be flawless.
kat_desu 30th-Mar-2012 02:19 am (UTC)
wow! this list is really good!
dyan1219 30th-Mar-2012 03:07 am (UTC)
This is a surprising list. I'm surprised none of AKBs are here. Names who usually come up on top aren't on top. I don't know whether to believe this list, but it looks believable. xD
thefortysecond 30th-Mar-2012 10:37 am (UTC)
I wonder if part of the reason is because there are so many of them? Divided loyalties perhaps? What I find baffling is that they're not on there as a unit. I mean, clearly other groups are there as a unit, so it's not banned?
exdream1999 30th-Mar-2012 01:50 pm (UTC)
Now that you pointed this out, I just noticed: Arashi's not listed as a group, but individually, while you have Exile, B'z, Mr. Children, Yuzu and Harisenbon on the list.

Something else weird: DREAMS COMES TRUE and Ikimonogatari listed under the female listeing instead of just singers being listed individually.

So, in summary: Lists: HOW DO THEY WORK?
thefortysecond 30th-Mar-2012 02:20 pm (UTC)
My guess is that they don't offer a list of options to participants in the poll, they just ask them straight up. So that can cause some skewing- fans of a group could say either a particular member or the entire group. In a way that really skews these lists towards unaffiliated individuals, because any fandom for a group will have it's loyalties immediately divided. No vote is perfect, I guess :)

P.S. I see you around a lot, hi! *waves*
exdream1999 30th-Mar-2012 02:24 pm (UTC)
Hmmm...it could be that. It would explain why Arashi as group isn't on the list, becuase I figure if it was a "write your own answers" kind of survey, we'd see them as a group. I still think put DCT and IMG on the female side is weird, but I think that's also how they perform on Kohaku, so I guess it's pretty standard.

Hi to you, too! (^_^)/~
thefortysecond 30th-Mar-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
I don't know, I don't really follow either of those so I couldn't really form an intelligent opinion on that.

Also wasn't Arashi on the list last year as both individuals and as a group? Maybe I'm thinking of a different list though, there are SO many of them.
exdream1999 30th-Mar-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
The chances of it being some other list is INCREDIBLY high.

Japan loves any chance to rank things. ANY.
thefortysecond 30th-Mar-2012 02:57 pm (UTC)
Heh, my main source of news about Japan is Arama, and I can see the abundance of polls XD Is everybody just OCD and MUST HAVE EVERYTHING RANKED AND/OR SORTED? I want to come live in Japan for a year once I get my career stabilized, and I'm as messy as shit, I'll probably stick out like a sore thumb even beyond being a gajin.
yuui1010 30th-Mar-2012 03:51 am (UTC)
i see, it's almost like longevity status ne. Almost all of the top ones are seniors!! Sugoi!!

nova_usagi 30th-Mar-2012 05:12 am (UTC)
