Golfer Ryo Ishikawa to marry high school sweetheart

Japanese golf star and heartthrob Ryo Ishikawa has disappointed his legions of female admirers by announcing his engagement to his childhood sweetheart.

Nicknamed “The Bashful Prince,” he stayed true to form with the announcement, giving scant details about his forthcoming nuptials, including the name of his intended.

“I’m now 20 years old, so I decided the time was right,” he said Sunday at Narita airport on his return from the U.S. Masters where he failed to make the cut, the Mainichi Shimbun and other media reported Monday.

“I got engaged last month, to a junior high school classmate,” he said.

Ishikawa and his management are fiercely protective of his privacy, and despite his status as one of the biggest celebrities in Japan, the media generally plays along.

Japanese sports newspapers have described Ishikawa’s fiancee as “a tall, slender beauty with long black hair,” a catch-all description that gives little away.

Ishikawa first introduced her to “people related to him” during the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida last month and she also accompanied him to the Masters, the Sports Hochi said.

Asked about the timing of the engagement, Ishikawa said with an embarrassed smile that “there is no special meaning or emotion. It just happens to be this timing,” the Nikkan Sports daily said.

Last October, his management announced Ishikawa was dating a girl he met in junior high school and called on the media to respect his privacy.

Ishikawa has been a hot marketing property since May 2007 when he became the youngest men’s winner on a major tour by lifting the domestic Munsingwear Open KSB Cup aged 15 years and eight months. He turned professional in 2008.

With his squeaky clean image, he attracts huge galleries, many of them women, wherever he plays in Japan.

that's great and all, but... wow, that's really fast! i'm this guy's age and i can't even imagine myself in such a situation... so this comes as a huge WTF for me. just saying.

but hey, congrats to him!
minamichan03 9th-Apr-2012 07:51 am (UTC)

IKR? But I guess it's because he can afford to get married, and not worry about school/career/etc cuz he's a successful golfer already.
dollfacesaori 16th-Apr-2012 04:00 am (UTC)
i think the same, and i'll be turning 23 this year XD
but the fact that he's had a career since he's 15, and has had to deal with situations much different than the ones we simple humans are used to probably makes him more mature??
i don't know, but it sounds cute anyways ^_^

THIS. 20's just too young, and really not the right time for marriage. D:
Well whatever.

OP/OP's source didn't include how years ago when he debuted he mentioned he'd always considered it his dream to get married, and was for marrying young, but that he didn't want to do so until he'd reached his other dreams first. Now that he's highly recognized around Japan as a pro golfer and has reached those dreams, I guess he figured with his coming of age it was the right time.

So while it may not be the best or most fathomable decision, it definitely has been something he's considered for years.

Oh wow.
It's admirable that he's wanted to marry early and kept that wish until now.
To want to marry just 5 years into his success....As a guy, and as a 20-year-old, this guy is something.

Adorable news :D

at first i was like "20 is too young" but after reading your reply, i kinda understood his decision.

Congrats to him and his fiancee :)

Awwww. I know this has already been said, but it deserves to be said again.

The Western Media was also all over him and his girlfriend in Florida last week. This is so sweet!

Only 20? You might want to enjoy some single years young homie.
shonen_key 9th-Apr-2012 07:32 am (UTC)
It's not uncommon for sportsmen to marry at the young age. Gamba Osaka's/Bayern Munich's Takashi Usami got married at what, - 18? 19? - before he went to Germany.

Congrats to Ryo, btw :)
turtles_tszx 9th-Apr-2012 12:07 pm (UTC)
mte, and weirdly enough that most of them get married to their high school sweethearts.
shonen_key 9th-Apr-2012 02:08 pm (UTC)
Most sticks to their childhood/high-school etc sweetheart since they've known each other before he [the sportsmen] got famous. I mean, when you're already well-known there are a lot of people who wants to be close to you simply for your status so it might not be easy to find someone who are ~genuine~
riapi 9th-Apr-2012 07:56 am (UTC)
wow~ so young, but then again, he can already support his would be family..
congrats to his incoming marriage~
squallina 9th-Apr-2012 08:00 am (UTC)
What's with all the age stuff? He's an adult and he's known her since junior high. For all we know they could have been absolute sweethearts the whole time (years upon years) and saying that if they still love each when they reach legal age, they'll get married. True love knows no bounds!

Anyway, as :O as I am about the news (because it just came out of nowhere for me,) I seriously wish them both all the best. I also hope Ryo-kun's career can get back into good swing so he can best support his beautiful, growing family. :)
whited_79 9th-Apr-2012 08:07 am (UTC)
congrats to them both! XD
isolated_killer 9th-Apr-2012 09:19 am (UTC)
awwww wishing him all the best ♥

Cutest bit of news I heard all week.

Though I tend to think that 20 is a really young age to get married, I think it's different when someone is financially secure and already is set in their career path.

I mean, Ichihara Hayato has been dating the same girl forever and hasn't made an honest woman out of her yet XD
ofs1992 9th-Apr-2012 01:35 pm (UTC)
so young
boycottbananas 9th-Apr-2012 10:17 pm (UTC)
I've always wanted to marry young and have children young - before I turn 25 at least.

I'm only 19 now but I know that'll never happen lol.

/sort of irrelevant comment is irrelevant
