JKT48 to star in their first Japanese CM

On April 16th, AKB48 sister group JKT48 attended a press conference for Tokiwa Pharmaceutical’s skincare product “Nameraka Honpo Bihaku Series“, as its newest CM character.

As their first time starring in a CM in Japan, member Shania Junianatha commented, “I’m excited to be able to star in a Japanese CM.” When asked about the CM shoot, Cleopatra shared, “In the CM, we all have to raise our heads together. We had a hard time doing it in unison, so we had about 50 retakes.”

Regarding the result of the CM, Melody Nurramdhani Laksani said, “It took about 50 tries, but I think it turned out really good. Through this CM, I hope more people will get to know JKT48.”

In the CM, the girls of JKT48 sing AKB48’s hit song, “Heavy Rotation“, in Indonesian. Under the blazing sun, the members innocently run across the beach, and hug the product character ‘Mochimochi-kun’. The CM will broadcast starting April 16th.

The 12 members who were present at the press conference performed an Indonesian version of “Heavy Rotation“. Although JKT48 has not made their CD debut yet, Melody strongly stated, “We will continue to do our best, and be able to have our own songs.” When asked about their debut, she responded, “If possible, within this year.”

This isn't wank, I swear, but with the girls getting to appear in commercials of Japanese products even before they release something, it just seems... convenient? Like they have it easy because of the 48 brand? I haven't even heard/seen their songs aside from the ones in Pocari Sweat or Laurier(?) commercials.

Disclaimer: I'm Indonesian, just to be clear.

They've been invited to several music shows and talk shows though and even be a guest in one of serial drama. So far they've performed Aitakatta, Heavy Rotation, and Kimi no Koto ga Suki Dakara Indonesian ver. These songs are from their commercial too though lol

Probably that's why musically they're not as prominent as today's other girl bands. Most people know 7 Icons or Cherrybelle but not them.

ah..Well it took times for 7icons and Cherrybelle to be well known like now though.

Johnny's Juniors get TV gigs even though none of them have officially debuted.
Seems like, if the 48 brand can get a very new group a CM deal, then there's no reason the 48 brand shouldn't get a very new group a CM deal.

Yeah, I guess the rules are different in Japan. In Indonesia, we don't have such established talent agencies whose artists are guaranteed a certain level of success even before debuting. Also, in here you normally get famous first, and then you endorse something, not the other way around. Which is why I think JKT is riding a lot on the fact that these products they endorse are from Japan and the executives probably already trust the 48 brand. But the average local music listener probably doesn't know who they are, compared with other current girl groups.

I agree with you. I'm kinda baffled at how they got to be the star of some CMs (which are Japanese products) but they don't really have any major appearance, just some random performances on TV that don't have a significant impact at all. Even I've never seen their Heavy Rotation PV on TV.

I think the AKB48 management are doing something wrong here because the momentum is starting to slip away. Indonesian music scene works so differently than Japan. It's been months and they haven't made any major release and even now people barely know them. The "OMG THEY'RE THE OFFICIAL BRANCH OF AKB48 IN INDONESIA!!" hype is starting to wane already. Indonesian get bored fast. At least that's how I feel.

MTE. Not to mention AKB is not very well known here in the first place compared to K-Pop groups...

yeah I wonder if the AKB fans here are still patiently waiting for this sister group of theirs.
And with the gazillion of local K-pop group wannabees showing up on TV everyday, I'm worried people will be too fed up with this kind of music/group format when JKT actually release something.
