Revised quake estimate warns of 9700 dead in Tokyo

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says 9,700 people could die in a huge earthquake hitting directly under the capital.

The government's first estimate in 6 years is based on a worst-case scenario of a magnitude-7.3 quake in the northern part of Tokyo Bay, with a focus closer to the ground than previously assumed.

The government says at about one-third of Tokyo's 23 wards people could experience tremors up to an intensity of 7, the maximum on the Japanese scale, and that 70 percent of the area could experience tremors of 6-plus.

The government says such a quake could collapse or heavily damage nearly 400,000 buildings. It says if the quake hits at around 6 PM on a windy winter day, fires could destroy about 200,000 buildings.

The result would be 9,700 dead -- up 50 percent from the government's estimate 6 years ago.

The government also estimated tsunami damage to Tokyo resulting from a magnitude-8 quake occurring at an underwater trough south of Tokyo.

It says a tsunami up to 2.6 meters high could surge into Tokyo Bay, but would be blocked by seawalls and floodgates. But it says if all the floodgates were damaged by the quake and could not be shut, 16 wards would be partially flooded up to about one meter, destroying or heavily damaging up to 2,500 buildings.

mjspice 18th-Apr-2012 10:53 am (UTC)
This is so damn sad. Praying for Japan.
fumine 18th-Apr-2012 11:01 am (UTC)
Let's hope this never happens T_T *clutching my bbs*
unlucky26 18th-Apr-2012 11:12 am (UTC)
Wait what when is this supposed to happen. I'm in Tokyo right now and have not/am not feeling anything.....................
pyroyale 18th-Apr-2012 11:15 am (UTC)
It's just a prediction. If it happens, you'll feel it.
whatablow 18th-Apr-2012 11:25 am (UTC)
I've been in Osaka for two months an I've not felt anything, but I watch the meteorolgical website a lot and northen east Japan/Fukishima gets a lot of earthquakes daily varying in magnitude. I know Japan suffers earthquakes all over daily, as it's on the ring of fire, but I feel tht something is going to happen soon ;( I hope my gut feeling is wrong though.
ren_squared 18th-Apr-2012 11:36 am (UTC)
A lot of the stuff going on up here is happening right along the part where the big one hit and on connecting faults. And then we've had slightly larger ones (nothing too strong in the past month or so) but most of what you probably are seeing are the bajillion tiny aftershocks that keep occurring in the same area. Yeah, I've started to obsessively check the maps especially since tenki updated their features >.>
aisasami 18th-Apr-2012 11:31 am (UTC)
There were some earthquakes today in the Izu and Bonin island chains...
coika 18th-Apr-2012 12:49 pm (UTC)
Really..? I didn't feel anything tho Izu isn't very far off...
wayof_life 18th-Apr-2012 11:35 am (UTC)
I hope with these predictions, something will be done, and on a safer side, like higher walls against tsunami than the predicted value. That would save a lot of lives... We wouldn't want another 3/11, regardless Tokyo or not )):
ren_squared 18th-Apr-2012 11:37 am (UTC)
the government has put a lot of plans into action and so have private companies such as the rail lines. Unfortunately, that stuff won't be completed until several years down the line

queencleopatra 18th-Apr-2012 11:39 am (UTC)
Ugh they really don't need this right now! Living in the pacific ring of fire would not be fun. :/
glimmeringneon 18th-Apr-2012 11:52 am (UTC)
Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, Peru, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, the United States (West Coast) and Canada (West Coast) are all in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

People forget that you should be most concerned for countries that are not as active, such as West Coast USA/Canada, because it means they are usually the most unprepared and something big is probably going to happen in the future, its just too quiet. The were an awful lot of casualties in New Zealand for instance, earthquakes do not occur as frequently there despite being in the ring of fire, the buildings were not built earthquake proof and people were unprepared. The same can be said for a lot of North American cities in the West Coast.

Predictions like these should not scare people but rather make them more prepared. Be safe everyone who is in Japan <3 (and everyone in the Pacific Ring of Fire, myself included).
anduril_narsil 18th-Apr-2012 11:55 am (UTC)
Just to confirm, this is their worst-case estimation right?

Considering Tokyo has about 13 million population, then, I suppose this estimation is pretty optimistic.
glimmeringneon 18th-Apr-2012 12:00 pm (UTC)
I agree, although 9300 lives could be lost based on their prediction in a worst case scenario, that is out of millions of people. Tokyo has done an excellent job I think when it comes to earthquake safety. In fact, I think Tokyo is the most earthquake ready and prepared city in the world.
sandpanther 18th-Apr-2012 12:13 pm (UTC)
The last time that particular fault line went was the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, which killed between 150,000 and 200,000 people. 9,700 as a worst case estimate shows great progress.
frostbittenlove 18th-Apr-2012 12:22 pm (UTC)
It does. The 1923 quake casualties and damages were also due to the weather disturbance that brewed above Tokyo Bay (and the timing was just perfect, in a bad sense) and the fires razed the city to the ground.

(On the upside, it's what probably spurred the government to do urban planning on the capital and look at how everything panned out nicely. Makes me think third-world cities need to be wiped out first so they can properly rebuild. :x)

Gosh >____< reminds me Tsuyopon's movie Sinking of JApan >___
squallina 18th-Apr-2012 12:49 pm (UTC)
That was such a sad movie. :(

It was also kind of weird seeing my favorite natural landmark (Mt Aso) blowing up.
j_halo7 18th-Apr-2012 12:41 pm (UTC)
I wished this article came out after my holiday in Japan...I'm like leaving this Friday and will actually be in Tokyo next weekend...

But I was concerned enough about earthquakes and its aftershocks in Japan even before this and actually found out information on what to do during them to be prepared. Pray that I won't have to put it to actual use.
fumine 18th-Apr-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
Crossing my fingers for you! :3
Have a nice trip!
squallina 18th-Apr-2012 12:56 pm (UTC)
Know this is coming someday and probably while I'm here and I'm pretty scared. (>.<) I have to be super-prepared. I'm also wishing super-preparedness for those estimated 9000+ so the figure can come as close to 0 as possible.
xoxoslpy 18th-Apr-2012 01:01 pm (UTC)
I hope that they will start being more cautions now when the time comes i'm sure it can help them alot.
unofficialdear 18th-Apr-2012 01:14 pm (UTC)
My dreams of living there are getting a bit shaky (no pun intended)
rim1789 18th-Apr-2012 02:21 pm (UTC)
Everyone in the Pacific Ring of Fire, stay safe... I'm of course worried about Tokyo and I hope the casualities will be much less, if not at all :/

But I'm especially worried about those out there who are not as prepared as Tokyo and Japan in general...Philippines, Peru and all the other contries :/
eishastan 18th-Apr-2012 03:29 pm (UTC)
I live in one of the countries in the Ring of Fire and we've had 3 considerably large quakes in less than a month... it's so unpredictable and it's scary to think about what might happen with a really large one...
kaseii 18th-Apr-2012 02:24 pm (UTC)
Omg I'm going to be studying abroad in Japan next semester from August to December.... Getting a little freaked out here ;-;
glimmeringneon 19th-Apr-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
If there's any country well-prepared for earthquakes its Japan, just keep that in mind.
asweetsymphony 18th-Apr-2012 03:21 pm (UTC)
I hope Japan make all the precautions needed to lessen the numbers. Preparedness is the key.
eishastan 18th-Apr-2012 03:28 pm (UTC)
Hoping it won't happen, sounds scary, the estimated number of deaths is really high.
prismboy 18th-Apr-2012 03:39 pm (UTC)
I hope nothing happens. :( I'll be there next year as well.
go_chan2011 18th-Apr-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
Hope this never happens T_T
annhh 18th-Apr-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
big earthquake hitting tokyo would just be the biggest nightmare. the houses are so closely built, I can't even imagine. I know you can prepare, to a certain point but you can't grow wings if the ground is falling..

people in (or going) tokyo, be safe everybody ^^
wapiko 18th-Apr-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
Way to fear monger.
kat_desu 18th-Apr-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
Praying for the Pacific Ring of fire. I just want everyone to stay safe.
