World’s First Snaggletooth Girl Group

You may have heard of the recent dental trend in Japan called tsuke yaeba, where women get their canines capped to get a crooked set of chompers. If so, you might have guessed that a snaggletooth girl group couldn’t be far behind, and here they are: TYB48.

Eighteen-year-olds Nana, Mio and Rika were chosen from a field of applicants recruited by a dental clinic specializing in tsuke yaeba. Girls with crooked teeth are generally thought to be cute in Japan, and with TYB48 as fashion trendsetters, organizers hope to encourage young women not blessed with overlapping fangs to take have their teeth cosmetically altered.

I think they meant DNW48...

A lot of Japanese children don't practice proper dental hygiene and they won't go to the dentist until the tooth is half rotted out of their head. So why would you want to group that makes jacked up JAWS teeth "kawaii"?

It's so sad when the poor girls, and some guys, can't even close their mouths because of their teeth.
taylorniw 19th-Apr-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
The lack of importance Japan puts on dental hygiene has always confused me, tbh. You'd think it would be a bigger deal there.
terrorpinguchib 19th-Apr-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
do i get this right:
the producers want me to undergo plastic surgery, just because i am not 'blessed' with those teeth? what comes next? facelift48 to encourage people to get rid of their wrinkles?

really presumptuous to change my facial structure just because of a girl group.

What? O_o They are actually hoping girls would feel insecure enough about their looks to have their teeth altered?

Also, I can't believe it's considered cute in Japan. I love my straight pearly teeth. Gotta keep it strong so when I'm old, I can still use it.
liime_arix 19th-Apr-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
Could be a hyperbole?
abusedpancake 19th-Apr-2012 08:57 pm (UTC)
so based on this *trend* i should be super famous in japan, huh? or is it true only for girls?
my teeth are so bad i barely smile :/ i am a person who's been *blessed* with canines overlapping almost. brushing my teeth is not fun at all, because it hurts and it also bleeds.
liime_arix 19th-Apr-2012 09:07 pm (UTC)
I've seen guys with it. Also the director of the dental clinic (it says beauty dental clinic on its site) has the snaggletooth as well.

Unless they've changed the meaning of the word "tsuke", they're not acutally going out and fucking up people's teeth for real.

I've seen "tsuke yaeba" on TV before and just like "tsuke matsuge" (false lashes), they're just a fake tooth you glue on top of you're existing teeth.
taylorniw 19th-Apr-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
I wish I could say this doesn't surprise me.

Japan never runs out of ideas.
hanarina 20th-Apr-2012 01:29 am (UTC)
I support this group.
mediawar 20th-Apr-2012 04:43 am (UTC)
I've always liked imperfect teeth (on others).

I must move to Japan ASAP.
queencleopatra 20th-Apr-2012 04:51 am (UTC)
They'll fail. What happened to all those other ...48 knockoff groups?!

THEY WILL ALL FAIL. FAIL.

Ugh the idol phenomenon, I want it to stop. Go back to just ...48 and H!P please. :/
mjspice 20th-Apr-2012 09:39 am (UTC)
Go back to just ...Morning Musume and H!P please.

There I fixed it for you.
cecelialorene 20th-Apr-2012 06:51 am (UTC)
Welp that's actually kinda cute. I don't really get the 48 thing but whatever.
I think everyone is looking at this from a western perspective and are missing the norm in Japan. People in western countries get braces largely for cosmetic reasons and expectations of the society to look normal. In Japan, crooked teeth seem to be becoming what straight teeth are to western societies.
And ouch all the people saying crooked teeth are gross/undesirable. I have crooked teeth and I was kinda hurt tbh.
natto_killer 20th-Apr-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
me too (used to), but I guess your crooked teeth are not the ones shaped to save plaques and bacteria and all those terrible food leftovers, hence why you can say that it's just the norm, and that people with crooked teeth fix them just for cosmetic reasons :/
conga10fury 20th-Apr-2012 09:17 am (UTC)
cute? for real?
mjspice 20th-Apr-2012 09:37 am (UTC)
TYB48...how original. Judging you on this Japan.
coika 20th-Apr-2012 10:06 am (UTC)
I don't mind that Japan things yaeba are cute or whatever, but I don't see the point of attaching a fake yaeba to your real teeth to make them look more jacked anymore than I see the obsession with countries like the U.S. and going through years and years of painful orthodontics on the whim that you might end up with a "perfect smile" afterwards.
yuma_daisuki 20th-Apr-2012 10:45 am (UTC)
The group needs a more creative name, 'nuff said.
aishriena 20th-Apr-2012 12:28 pm (UTC)
So they are chosen based on their teeth and not their talent? Oh world nowadays, where is the real talents? People can become a singer just by auditioning their teeth and not their voice.

I guess it's good for the confidence of girls in Japan, since braces are so expensive and Japanese tend to have small jaws that can't really accommodate all their teeth...? But I don't know about people purposely altering their teeth to have yaeba. It's just not good hygienically!

I had yaeba when I came to Japan and then decided to get braces about a year later -my Japanese friends were really disappointed in me (もったいない!) but honestly, brushing is so much easier and I love smiling now. I hated having fangs and overlapping teeth! Sure, yaeba look cute when you're younger but when you get older, it's just... no.
maffinoyobiai 20th-Apr-2012 04:50 pm (UTC)
Good grief, if I ever go to Japan, my three years of braces will have been a waste!

OK, I have crooked teeth and like the idea of celebrating them instead of viewing them as a flaw, but putting together a band promoting cosmetic surgery is just...ugh. It's like having a group called Everybody Get Botox or something.
