Sendai locals protest against bringing pandas to the city

Preparations are being made to bring pandas to northern Japan to cheer up 3/11 disaster victims but on April 21 some locals made it clear they are against the move, reports ANN News.

Johnny’s & Associates will cover the costs to look after the panda for the first five years, in hope the panda can help cheer up locals getting over the devastating earthquake and tsunami and help the local economy. It has been reported about 60 locals in Sendai marched around the city centre in protest over the weekend, saying they were against the idea of bringing in a panda for commercial purposes.

It has been reported the group are also concerned about life after the Johnny’s money runs out, saying money the local council will have to use to look after the panda should be used on local reconstruction projects.

However, it has also been reported other locals are happy with pandas coming to the city.

“I love pandas. They’re so cute and I hope they come,” said one girl.

“(The positive effect on the local economy) is connected to the reconstruction of the community. People don’t need to be opposed to it,” said one local.

Well, considering that the basic loan period is ten years....

I'm pretty sure China wouldn't mind them returning them after only five years?

Though, I'm pretty sure if the zoo set up a donation system to raise the money for the last five years, they could probably get a pretty good chunk of it during this first five years.

zoemi 24th-Apr-2012 02:14 pm (UTC)
Why should people be donating to the zoo when their money would be better spent when donated to the area's restoration?

No one understands what Johnny is thinking.

I have mixed feelings on this.
"Our town has been destroyed. I know! Let's bring pandas!" -.-;

If it's going to make people happy and to forget the trauma even for a moment, great.
If it's going to bring money into the city which very much needs it for rebuilding, wonderful.
If someone else is going to be paying for it (thank you, J&A, and out of your own pockets too!) splendid.
But somewhere in there I still have trouble seeing the "we need help, we need pandas" connection.
burger 24th-Apr-2012 01:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I agree. It's a very cute morale booster and all but it's far from the most practical thing to spend money on.
mjspice 24th-Apr-2012 12:58 pm (UTC)
Weren't they over this? Oh well. People can never look at the positive side. XP

this is a really stupid idea tbh
hpswf1 24th-Apr-2012 01:20 pm (UTC)
J&A use their money, if they want pandas, they can use their money for pandas. No one can say them don't do that.
yume_no_yousei 24th-Apr-2012 01:25 pm (UTC)
I like how polite their protest posters are. "No thank you!" xDD;
mjspice 24th-Apr-2012 01:40 pm (UTC)
LOL I just noticed that! XD
wayof_life 24th-Apr-2012 01:38 pm (UTC)
Instead of saying "don't understand what Johnny's thinking", you probably should say Matchy instead. Isn't this whole thing his brilliant idea? He was the one who came up with how the money they raised via Marching J, no?
aye_no_jinsei 24th-Apr-2012 01:49 pm (UTC)
that was Matchy's idea?
why can't he come up with better idea?
kochan_addict 24th-Apr-2012 01:56 pm (UTC)
It's actually a very simple principle -
To rebuild the area, it's not enough to just rebuild the buildings. You need to bring new money into the area, new businesses.
Making the zoo an attraction for people not only in the immediate area but also for people from other places (panda's and Johnny's name connected), is an attempt to bring "foreign money"; bring into the city money from outside the city.
They can't count on donations all the time, they have to create their own money-flow.

Now, I'm not saying pandas are the answer, only time will say if this works, but the idea behind it is a good one.

Going through paying conservation tax for damn pandas, i refuse to know that when I buy a KAT-TUN/NEWS/Arashi/T&T CD or single some of this money goes into these stupid pandas again...People need to know how ecologically and biologically useful they are...it takes 4 years to turn on a panda and a million US to make a test tube panda.
quinie115 24th-Apr-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
excuse my language here, but do imagine when you dont make alot and then 13% of your income goes into yea...panda tax =="
go_chan2011 24th-Apr-2012 02:23 pm (UTC)
"I don't understand what Johnny's thinking"

Well simple: bring the Panda to take Jin´s place in Japanese entertainment and send Jin far far away, to the Amurikas lol!

I don't get it, why now?
"a disaster happened... Let's bring pandas!"?
tensaibaka 24th-Apr-2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
NEVER go against Johnny! You won't know what they will do to the boys!
chibi_hime 24th-Apr-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
I think that this whole situation wouldn't have happened if people didn't go around whispering that JE was using this whole panda situation to buy China's support. And if JE didn't drop the ball and first said that the Marching J donations were going to fund this.

Within 5 years, I'm sure Sendai Zoo can set aside enough money from admission, gift shop sales and "Feed the Panda" donations to keep it another 5 years. The kids will like it and it can bring in more tourism to Sendai. Because let's be real, I've been to Sendai before and after the earthquake and there really isn't much to do there (except for the Tanabata festival).
exdream1999 24th-Apr-2012 02:40 pm (UTC)
All of the cool stuff is what's outside of Sendai.

Like, Matsushima or anything that's related to Date Masamune. I stayed there for about week doing a homestay and I loved it there. True the city itself isn't as excting as say Tokyo or Yokohama, but the area around it has a done of awesome historical sites.

But, I'm totally with you on the zoo being able to raise the remaining 5 years' money, if only because Japan's boner for pandas is visable from space.
phishn37 24th-Apr-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, fuck pandas.
izabera 24th-Apr-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
Isn't this the same as when people complain about money being spent on a public work of art instead of hospitals/schools/etc...

I admit JE made a strange choice, but pandas will draw visitors from both Japan and foreign countries. Pandas are still a rare sight and many people want to see pandas at least once in their life. These visitors will spend money in hotels, restaurants and local shops.
surchi 24th-Apr-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
Johnny's know that you can feed your belly with food but you really need Pandas to feed your soul.
debbris 24th-Apr-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
JE is just helping and it's too much of a gamble to let this project be discontinued at this point.

Let the pandas in. See how the cash flow goes. If things get ugly, find a way out. JE is good with that.
kachuusha 24th-Apr-2012 04:05 pm (UTC)
BRING IN THE DANCING PANDAS
mame_meme 24th-Apr-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
this is stupid. Matchy is so dumb. Johnnys is stupid for allowing him to use charity money for this shit.

What did panda do to deserve so much of this crap? Panda should be left alone
Also instead of using money on the panda, use it to buy them food or built shelter or whatnot
Matchy is urk...
chizzyrei 24th-Apr-2012 04:33 pm (UTC)
this is not charity money. the Marching J money has been divided to the 3 prefectures already. this is from J&A's own money.
hhnd_2002 24th-Apr-2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
Maybe if it attracts tourists and raise money for the region, but I doubt it, if people want to see panda they'll just freakin' go to China! This is so frivolous in light of the tragedy & people & places that need help to start over again.
quinie115 24th-Apr-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
come to think of it...does sendai have the environment for pandas to live in? Or are they building a building thing for them...so...where does the money go into building that? Is Johnny paying for that?
sadistic_dance 24th-Apr-2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
Those pandas will actually bring in much needed revenue for Sendai.
Bitches love pandas.

chibi_hime 24th-Apr-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
Just image how many panda goods they'd sell. I bet every female who goes see it would leave with a medium size plushie.
pandapaw 24th-Apr-2012 05:10 pm (UTC)
moveing pandas to make a country "happy"
so whats in it for the pandas?
im glad that some people think its a bad idea because so do i
yes there cute and its probs a nice idea
but anyone thought of the pandas?
i think there quite happy where they are
too much stress will make the pandas ill and health wise it will drop!

chibi_hime 24th-Apr-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
Why did the humans take them out of the bamboo forest in the first place?

It's not just that they'd be moved out of China, as it is, they are already taking from their real homes.
pandapaw 24th-Apr-2012 05:12 pm (UTC)
pandas are a life
