47 Ronin Footage Screened at Comicon!

Just delayed to February to finish up some FX work, Carl Rinsch's feature film directorial debut 47 Ronin (Feb. 8, 2013), starring Keanu Reeves, showed off a sizzle reel that combined footage, animatics and concept art. Since we visited the set nearly a year ago, we already knew of the look and scale of the film so it's nice to see that it's really been coming together. It mainly showed a scene of Keanu's character sword-fighting in a make-shift ring on a ship and a scene afterwards where Hiroyuki Sanada's character asks him how he learned to fight like that, and Keanu's Kai responds "by fighting demons" and then we saw a few of the amazing creatures he fights in the movie, including an ogre-like Oni and the monks known as the Kangu Warlords, who we see in a lightning-fast action scene. Honestly, we know quite a bit more about the movie but since we're under embargo from our set visit, we better leave it at that.

According to another report, the need for more special effects work is really evident.

Just an off-topic reminder kids: when you hit the booze too hard your speech will suffer from it. You might find yourself unable to complete the most simple sentence and in severe cases even words. When that happens, let go of the bottle, step away from the computer and get help.

I see what you did there (I think...)

When I saw "11 comments" I thought there was a conversation happening. I arrive to find two actual comments and one nut with 9 single capital letters. :(

Back OnT, can someone tell me more about this whole project please? All I've seen are negative and short articles. All I know is that Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada (<3) and Jin are in it and it's about samurai for hell knows what reason. It's also a remake of something?

Have you read this?
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/universal-pushes-47-ronin-keanu-reeves-316572
It linked to another interesting old article about the production taking a gamble like John Carter: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/%20john-carter-taylor-kitsch-47-ronin-keanu-reeves-mission-impossible-283347
I'm surprised it was not posted in arama. It told a lot about how they came about the making of the film... I don't really view it a negative article since they predicted it has a better chance of not flopping compared to John Carter

Thanks for the links. Sounds like it's having trouble from the get-go. :(

i still think it has a lot of potential to be awesome. it has award winning production team and a rookie with impressive people backing him up for the gamble. i don't think they will screw it.

the Febuary release makes more sense than trying to dump it in highly competitive Thanksgiving season.

I don't even know if it's reportable. :S:S

& yes the movie is a remake. I'll probably watch it for Keanu & Hiroyuki. :S
squallina 28th-Apr-2012 10:24 am (UTC)
I have reported it anyway. I was nice about it and said that I was aware it wasn't in the rules, but I mean, look at it! Grrrr.

Hiroyuki is an awesome, awesome, very underrated actor! <3

Good then! OC was trolling so bad.

& YES OMG! He's so dang awesome!
squallina 28th-Apr-2012 10:43 am (UTC)
Every time he's in something, I can't help but to stare at him instead of whoever the lead or good guy is. Onmyoji is probably the only exception, but only because Mansai Nomura was so effing amazing! *____*

i think she was saying it's CINEMACON and not COMICON

yeah but that's trolling either way. :S

The movie is such a mess. I'll be really surprise if it can recoup its budget. Pity cause I was actually looking forward to it because of the cast.

And it is really not Jin's fault that it'll flop because he has a pretty small role. The director is just not ready for such a big project because this is his first featured film. The scale is too big for someone who has only done commercials before this mess.

Did you get to watch the teaser?

I'm excited about it tbh. The production sounds juicy with lots of potential.
zomboid 28th-Apr-2012 07:18 am (UTC)
I saw a cut of it. It is too unfocused even though the actors were pretty good. :( the director doesn't know what kind of story he wants to tell and the whole film suffers because of it.

But who knows, maybe the final cut will be awesome and mind blowing. I'm not supposed to say anything about it anyway cause it hasn't been released yet.

aw dem. how long was the cut? I was really looking forward to it.
The studio wanted a big fantasy extravaganza while the director and Keanu wanted to keep the drama. Hope it will not be flopping. I sense there's a lot of interest in Asian stuff this coming years so it might not flop if they market it right.
zomboid 28th-Apr-2012 07:51 am (UTC)
It was a teaser to show the most impressive scenes to potential buyers. It really wasn't the final product at all but it felt slapped together. I can see why they pushed back the release date because there is still a lot of post production they need to do including sound and special effects. So really, I can't say one way or another.

It depends on what Asian stuff. Korean culture is getting a lot of push because of all the possible Hollywood remakes but interest in Japanese things in the western market has been on the decline because Japan really isn't promoting their pop culture as hard as Korea is right now. At least they are not in the states so I don't see 47 Ronin generating a lot of buzz as a historical drama but it might get more if it's marketed as a fantasy samurai action flick because that appeals to more of the general public.

I should stop commenting on my phone. It leads to a lot of spelling mistakes

that's my idea for it to fly actually. i don't want it to be another Bunraku so it better has a nice balance.
zomboid 28th-Apr-2012 08:10 am (UTC)
Also, if it's a fantasy samurai action flick, it has potential for merchandising that will help with recouping the budget. People don't make action figurines for dramatic movies to sell to kids. That was part of the reason why Pixar made Cars 2 even though the original wasn't exactly celebrated critically.

them strategically changing the date release to Feb also will help them recoup. being the only big budgeted action flick during the slow winter season will help it get a lot of attention. i doubt merchandising is something they'll be going for though. it'll be weird to see samurai Keanu action figure but who knows.
b_akakame 28th-Apr-2012 07:49 am (UTC)
Reading the comments, I just hope this isn't going to be a second Bunraku >__

Hate to say it but probably that. :S
mrjl_writer 28th-Apr-2012 01:52 pm (UTC)
I hate that for all the hype they put around Bunraku being released in NA, they did shit-all in really trying to promote it. I think the promoters didn't have a lot of faith in it, and I know it wasn't the best movie in terms of plot but it really didn't take itself seriously, so you (meaning general you here) weren't supposed to, you know? It was just pure plain fun, and the cast was pretty good. I think it could have done better than it did, with some effort.

You're probably right though, this movie will likely follow the same suit. Not that it matters much to me, it sounded horrible from the start and you know it's in a really sad state when someone's saying that the movie needs more special effects to be better. It means your story bites.
