No New Ghibli Film for 2012

Former Studio Ghibli public relations head, Junichi Nishioka, and the current Ghibli Museum public relations head have both acknowledged that Ghibli will not release a new film for this year.

Nishioka mentioned at the Kyōsō Open Forum in Yokohama, Nishioka that co-founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata are both working on separate films and both are more than a year from completion.

Nishioka later recapped on Miyazaki's words that Studio Ghibli's finances are riding on Miyazaki's next film, and he said with a laugh that if these films are not finished then Studio Ghibli will fold.

Aw, well, I'm more just excited to learn that they're working on movies now. Still need to see Poppy Hill. I hope they don't have to fold.

And yup, fold is commonly used to describe businesses that have to close.

If they're working on anything as amazing as Spirited Away was, I approve the absence of a yearly movie for the sake of having a yearly movie.

TBQH I haven't been as entranced by a Studio Ghibli film before or since Spirited Away, with the exception of maybe Howl's Moving Castle (and Howl pretty much made that film.)

Please Studio Ghibli, bring back the real magic!

I haven't seen the Arrietty movie, but I've been told it was cute. I love Studio Ghibli films, so i really hope they don't fold. And I'm okay with them not releasing yearly movies so long as the movies they do release have that Ghibli magic. :)

I like how you think :)
mame_meme 4th-May-2012 07:46 am (UTC)
to be honest I was never Gibli fan :-/
I love animation and I love Pixar to death but Gibli never amazed me
Their story is just so...okay. Never brilliant. (my opinion)
The hype about some of their films, like Chihiro one, left me disappointed when I saw the film as a a kid.

fact that many Japanese ppl would think Gibli is equal worth of Disney makes me puzzle
since many Disney films are so much better than Gibli films on so many different levels
whited_79 4th-May-2012 08:19 am (UTC)
and I've known lot of legit Americans thinking that Ghibli movies are better than Disney too, no lie...

to each his/her own of course...

no folding! they're pulling our legs, right? right??!

Why do I find it so hard to believe they'd ever run out of money..? Also, Isao Takahata comeback ♥♥
Plus we get two movies next year then. Sounds awesome. Poppy Hill will be my new Ghibli movie this year since I haven't been able to find it anywhere yet...

I am more than willing to wait- as long as it's a high quality film that is up to Ghibli's original standards. I adore the shorts more than many of the films.

I still love Ghibli films before and right up to Spirited Away. I still get choked up at the part when Haku realizes who is he and the deep connection he has with Chihiro that transcends any world and mortal consciousness. Honestly, it's one of my favorite love stories for its purity and innocence (albeit, I wouldn't classify it overall as a love story).

high quality animated films take a lot of time. it takes years to develop and create a storyboard/characters/ect. as long as it is worth the wait which most of the time it is.
