Man cooks, serves own genitals to 5 paying diners

Japanese illustrator Mao Sugiyama cooked and served his own male genitalia.

A Japanese artist cooked his own genitals and served them to five paying diners in Tokyo to cover the medical costs, in a bizarre act to raise awareness about sexual minorities.

Mao Sugiyama had his penis and testicles surgically removed in March and kept them frozen for two months before dishing them out—seasoned and braised—to customers at an event hall on May 13, according to postings on his Twitter account and local police.

Diners paid 20,000 yen for the plate with a portion of genitals. Pictures published on a website appeared to show the meal came complete with mushrooms and a parsley garnish.

The painter, who is reportedly 22, said on Twitter the organ had been removed by a physician and certified to be free of infections.

The meal was prepared under the supervision of a certified cook and diners were required to sign a waiver indemnifying Sugiyama and event organizers.

In May 18 tweets, the artist said steps were taken so the act met all relevant laws, including a ban on organ sales, processing of medical waste and even food sanitation requirements.

“I receive questions from some women and men… asking ‘Will there be a next time? Please host it again.’ But there is only one set of male organ,” he tweeted on May 16.

“Unfortunately, I have no plan for the next time.”

Sugiyama, who considers himself “asexual,” that is without gender, initially thought about eating the genitals himself, but decided to solicit paying customers to help pay his hospital bills for the surgery.

In an email to AFP, he confirmed the event had taken place and said it was organized to raise awareness about “sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people.” He said he was readying to publish an official account of the day.

Police in Tokyo said they knew of the episode, but added that it had not broken the law as cannibalism was not illegal in Japan.

“We are aware of the case. There was nothing (criminal) to it. It does not violate any detailed rules. There is nothing to take action about,” an officer at Suginami police station told AFP.

If people can eat bull testicles I don't see why they can't eat human ones!
squallina 26th-May-2012 03:13 am (UTC)
Bull testicles = just as gross. I can't believe you're actually asking about the taste of human ones.

loverboy 26th-May-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
Well tbh the texture would be more unique. I'm sure it just tastes like meat.
alphie_damiek 26th-May-2012 03:18 am (UTC)
would it though? the testicles probably wouldn't taste like meat because it's not muscle, right? my guess is that it would be really rubbery.
loverboy 26th-May-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
I hate rubbery foods. :(

It would be a bit of a familiar taste, I imagine, since it was flavoured and all before it was cooked.

I've had cow testicles before and they're kind of bland with a sweetbread-like inner texture. The skin is definitely a bit rubbery.

It's just curiosity. No one is actually going to hunt down a man & try it.
I wonder how it tastes but I wouldn't try it. I was disgusted when a friend said she tried cow tongue & it was so good. I went to the restaurant with her & tried it too. I was creeped out, but man! Grilled, thin cow tongue is so tasty.

If only I can find this video my brother showed me...it was I think, a documentary about a guy (or a group of people?) that put out a wanted ad - for humans who were willing to be lovers then be eaten. D=

Two German guys, I believe. They met online and eventually met up irl. They agreed to one guy killing the other, and then eating him.
nansuki 26th-May-2012 03:35 am (UTC)
Yea yea something like that. Not gonna lie, I found it disturbing, but they both know what they were getting into & they consented. I really don't see whats the big deal about it.

What does worry me is if people start having this "need" of human flesh & then do things to endanger others.
squallina 26th-May-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
I'm not exactly a vegetarian but I rarely eat meat, and there's no way I'd eat bull testicles, pig face (an Okinawan delicacy), or even sit here being curious about what other human beings taste like. It disturbs me even more that people are trying to use "well they were both okay with it" reasoning to justify it. Sorry, but I'm just very, very disturbed about people who want to try out (or even imagine trying out) eating other people. If it's a cultural thing, I can understand that and try to suppress my own cultural norms for it and look the other way, but clearly that isn't the case here.
nansuki 26th-May-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
Well, I admit - I love food & I seriously love meat, beef especially. However, I don't think I'll ever try bull testicles, pig face, feet, or even rabbit & insects! I wonder of taste & texture - I don't know why. Sorry if I've offended you and/or disturbed you.

By having that consent - I didn't say it to justify it. I said it because they're the ones involved & had knowledge about it. It wasn't that he purposely cooked it & fed it to them without them knowing. (Like how some fast food places spit in your food.) Or they killed a man to eat him. It wasn't...malicious. (I believe that's the right word I'm looking for. Sorry if I'm not making sense.)

I am afraid of it becoming a horrible phenomenon. Oh god the crimes. ><.

I can understand we have a bit of a difference of opinion here and you're being really reasonable and level-headed about it so you're not offending me. :) Despite being a food-lover myself, I don't wonder at the taste or texture of everything from soil to human genitalia, so I'm afraid I really am not with you on this, not even on a curiosity level. :/

I arrived at this article thinking that was exactly what he'd done and thought that was terrible enough, but the fact that people knew what they were eating was much worse for me. :(

I hope this doesn't become a booming trend. It's promoting nothing but shock-factor IMO.

Forgive me if I don't return - just being in this post in general brings my lunch back up to my throat. If not for the link made to asexuality and other sexual minorities I really wouldn't have even ventured into this post. x(
nansuki 26th-May-2012 05:24 am (UTC)
I've never thought about human genitalia till this post & human flesh till I saw The Silence of the Lambs.
I hope it stays as a shock factor & then diminishes. (Now I remember they had bull testicles on Fear Factor once. IIRC, someone cried.)

It's totally fine! I'm glad we can have a discussion like this. Hopefully we can have discussions on nicer topics later on. =)

Cow tongue is delicious! I actually never thought it would be a weird thing to eat for some people since one of the typical dishes from my country is served with cow tongue ^^

a documentary about a guy (or a group of people?) that put out a wanted ad - for humans who were willing to be lovers then be eaten.

That's disturbing and disgusting.
nansuki 26th-May-2012 04:22 am (UTC)
It's just i never heard of it being eaten. I've heard of chicken feet being eaten - my aunt makes soup with it & it still creeps me out. Lol. I don't think I'll ever try it because of how it's texture looks.

Yea, my mouth dropped when I watched it. I couldn't even come up with questions. My brother had to watch it for some Psych class he took.

Chicken feet too? Another typical dish from my country -well, it's basically chicken soup- has chicken feet (I don't particularly like it though), I believe it's eaten in all the neighbor countries too and I've seen it in other continents as well, so (again) I thought no one would find it weird to eat, but you do, where are you from? lol.

My aunt loves it. Wait a minute...are you from a Hispanic country? Lol. I live in the USA. But my mom (& aunt that I've mentioned) are from the Dominican Republic. I think chicken feet is typical there. Just like that intestines dish...churro? chorizo? Something like that. Lol.
maytevb 26th-May-2012 05:21 am (UTC)
Yeah, from a South American country to be exact. I guess Hispanic people do eat almost the same things ^^ but sometimes we name things differently; churro as far as I know is a snack, and chorizo = sausage for us.
It is pretty common to eat intestines here but not as a main dish, you could say it's like eating hot-dogs, and my mom and I love it, but we never prepare them ourselves, too much work XD
nansuki 26th-May-2012 05:51 am (UTC)
Awesome~ So true. Sometimes I get so confused talking in Spanish with my Mexican neighbors. It's so cool though.

Yes! That's it - chorizo! (kinda looks like a sausage & the outer skin is pig intestines) My mom & dad loved it as well - but now they have high cholesterol so they stay away from stuff like that. I figured it was hard to make. XD
