Girls' Generation Becomes 2nd Korean Artist To Sell 1 Million Albums In Japan

Girls' Generation's debut Japanese album has sold over one million copies in Japan.

Girls' Generation's debut Japanese album was released on June 1st, 2011. After a year of being released, the album has been certified Million, meaning it has sold over one million copies, by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. This is determined by the total number of CDs sold by retailers.

Girls' Generation is the 2nd Korean artist to be certified Million by the RIAJ. The first Korean artist to accomplish this was BoA with her 2005 compilation album "Best of Soul".

Maybe T-ara could do what SNSD did to reach a million. Re-release virtually the same album so that Korean fans in Japan would buy it the second time. They could do it several times if need be.
kaleido37 9th-Jun-2012 04:10 pm (UTC)
booo~~ even without the rerelease snsd were at 650k copies, i'm sure T-ARA will only get as far as gold. and lol at you acting as if you know who bought the albums xD.

Agree
Umm..Maybe GOLD are hard for them na ,lol

So can I say Shoujo Jidai is now the top-selling Korean artist currently in Japan? Whatever happened to KARA? .___.

The whole Kara vs. SNSD things is crazy. SNSD sells more physical copies, but Kara is more popular as seen by their digital sales and general public opinion/knowledge. The groups also have two different images in Japan. SNSD is viewed more as artist, becuase they only go on shows to promote their songs and tour, while Kara is viewed as idol, becuase they do the variety circuit and speak Japanese. Both groups have a lot going for them (ie: SNSD digital sales and Kara's physicals sales are no joke either), but at the end of the day Kara is more well known/"popular" with the general public then SNSD. And it should be that way as they actually invest a lot of time in Japan and learning the language.
sweetdary 9th-Jun-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
i just hope they learn japanese, but how, if those girls dont have time, if they have time to sleep is a miracle.
megamisama_ann 9th-Jun-2012 03:22 pm (UTC)
They can if they want. well, they need much more and more toil for sure. Seohyun seems busying school, but her Japanese improve very well than her unnis. Maknae loves learn because she wants to...they have 9 members as well. Not every member has super tight schedule.

The 5 kara members are also busy too. Back and forth South Korea - Japan is not easy at all.
feel_my_mind 9th-Jun-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
Honestly, I doubt they will. I don't think that SME has any plans for them to do so, tbh. They even said when SNSD started to promote in Japan, they said it would be nothing like Tohoshinki. They weren't going to try and become Japanese artist, they were going to remain a Korean artist that releases in Japan. And if Japan doesn't seem to care, which they don't judging by sales, then there is really no reason to force them.
yukkiz 9th-Jun-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
Yep ,now SNSD are..Their album total sales are 850k
Anyway, KARA is very famous too .Their album sales are 730k
Now ,KARA & SNSD are the most successful Korean idol group in Japan
kyupudding 9th-Jun-2012 09:55 pm (UTC)
tbf kara's album sales were doing better than snsd's up until snsd released a repackage.
icierrrrrblue 10th-Jun-2012 06:59 am (UTC)
KARA also had a re-release, so~
miracle_candle 18th-Jun-2012 08:03 am (UTC)
shojo jidai is undoubtedly popular in japan. but kara still somehow sells more if you consider their singles + albums sales as well. plus, the reason why sj managed to reach 1 mil is because they re-released the same album later that year. if kara do the same, it should be no problem for them to reach 1 mil too.
kaleido37 9th-Jun-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
Omg!....did actually make it before people actually started to downgrade their success??

mushroomesque 9th-Jun-2012 03:19 pm (UTC)
No it isn't. It's determined by the number of copies shipped to retailers, aka not all of those records have been sold yet.
setsuna16 9th-Jun-2012 03:27 pm (UTC)
Uh... Valenti is also a certified million seller. I think before Best of Soul.
feel_my_mind 9th-Jun-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
The actual Japanese page (which I don't think is even cited here) says that the last album by a Korean artist to do so was BoA's Best in Soul.

Both Listen to My Heart and Valenti were certified millions. Listen to My Heart coming before Valenti.
setsuna16 9th-Jun-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
Ahhhh.

GET IT, BoA!
miracle_candle 18th-Jun-2012 08:06 am (UTC)
where all her fans went now? to be able to sell 1 mil meaning she has such a big fanbase.
qrizta 9th-Jun-2012 03:48 pm (UTC)
woohoo!!! partaaaayyyyy!! Congratz girls. May SME gift you something as huge as your achievement.
lovely_tunes 9th-Jun-2012 04:16 pm (UTC)
ONE FULL NIGHT OF SLEEP FOR YOU!
k0dama 9th-Jun-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
All that high-heel hopping wern't for nought
eishastan 9th-Jun-2012 04:28 pm (UTC)
Congrats bbs <3 This has been their best album so far, they totally deserve it! can't wait for Paparazzi and a second Japanese album, i love their original Japanese material.
tsarina101 9th-Jun-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
wow! congrats snsd :D
jeugd1 9th-Jun-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)
After a year of being released, the album has been certified Million

glimmeringneon 9th-Jun-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
That should be pointed out :). Its still impressive nevertheless. I wonder is SNSD going to go upward from here or the beginning of their decent?

As for BoA, she has three million-selling albums in Japan (Listen To My Heart, VALENTI and Best of Soul) and was the first non-Japanese in 20 years to have a #1 single in the Oricon charts with DO THE MOTION back in 2005.

eishastan 9th-Jun-2012 11:28 pm (UTC)
and still your faves could never.. oh wait aren't you a 2ne1 stan? LMFAO
albeitalways 11th-Jun-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
and what is 2ne1's relevance in op's comment? point being, snsd racked up those million sales after a year.
eishastan 11th-Jun-2012 04:53 am (UTC)
The op was not pointing it out just as a fact, and he is a 2ne1 stan so trying to diminish GG's success by emphazising it took them a year is kinda ridiculous, since his faves are legit flops in japan :)

makes sense?
albeitalways 11th-Jun-2012 05:50 am (UTC)
well i suppose if op compared the amount of time it took gg to reach a million sales as compared to kara or boa it would've made more sense.
eishastan 11th-Jun-2012 07:25 am (UTC)
Kara hasn't been certified million with any of their releases yet, GG has been the second korean artist after Boa to get the million certification.

icierrrrrblue 10th-Jun-2012 07:01 am (UTC)
It doesn't make the achievement any less significant?
Longevity is what brought this album to this certification, they're still selling about 1.5k a week~
love323able 9th-Jun-2012 07:30 pm (UTC)
kinda surprised the management actually shipped a million copies,
i wonder how long will it take to actually have SOLD a million copies O.O

yukkiz 9th-Jun-2012 07:46 pm (UTC)
TBH i don't think Shoujo Jidai 's album can reach million !!
Anyway, they are very longevity :D..Now,their total sales are 850k
miki_chan08 10th-Jun-2012 01:23 am (UTC)
what makes you think they can't?
yukkiz 10th-Jun-2012 05:19 am (UTC)
because they have released since last year ^ ^ .Now,their sales per week declines so much .It's hard to reach million
but they 're very longevity! .Million is hard but 900k is possible ^ ^
eishastan 9th-Jun-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
They charted for 17 weeks i think and the last time i checked they had 850k sales, not sure how much they have now, but i doubt they will sell the million
kamelover101 9th-Jun-2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
They are still 850k on Oricon after a year INCLUDING the repack which sold 150k copies. Nothing to sneeze at though
sweet16een 10th-Jun-2012 08:38 am (UTC)
that's easy to do when you repackage the same CD over and over again
eishastan 11th-Jun-2012 05:00 am (UTC)
LOL they just released 1 repacked album and that one sold 150k, so do the math and please stop talking nonsense.

and may i ask if that guy in your icon sell that much?? lol
viakarma 10th-Jun-2012 10:24 am (UTC)
what I'm more curious about is how the hell tvxq didn't somehow sell 1 million albums >_>
antifools 10th-Jun-2012 10:54 am (UTC)
Because they don't release virtually the same album over again so that stupid Koreans fans wanting to prove their artists are popular in Japan can earn their bragging rights. With half a million Koreans living in Japan, I'm also surprised that their Kpop artists can't sell that much.
eishastan 11th-Jun-2012 05:03 am (UTC)
lol you are so pressed, are you the new Dookmi/Seabornestyle/Koutaishi?
albeitalways 11th-Jun-2012 03:31 am (UTC)
as it should be, that album was the best snsd ever had so far. looking forward to their next jap album.
pistol_eyes 12th-Jun-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
seriously SNSD's Japanese music>>>>>>>Korean music
pistol_eyes 12th-Jun-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
congrats to them.
