Suntory tries carbonated coffee drink - Espressoda

In recent months, we’ve brought to you news on several interesting and creative beverages such as fat-busting cola, salty watermelon flavored Pepsi and Okinawa brown sugar cola.

Now, major beverage maker Suntory Holdings Limited has announced another new innovative drink that will come on to the Japanese market on July 31. The new drink, called Espressoda, is actually a carbonated coffee drink. However, based on the response on the internet, it appears that Japanese consumers are not so sure about coffee soda as a drink.

The drink combines the rich taste of espresso coffee with the refreshing feel of soda, and Suntory hopes it will be popular with the 20s to 30s age group. They have also made the packaging stylish, with a black and silver label on a plastic bottle with a unique surface texture created in the image of ice to give it a cool look. What’s also of note is that Suntory apparently spent 5.8 billion yen on new carbonating technology which made it possible to carbonate the drink without ruining the flavor of coffee in the process. That’s some expensive soda making technology.

While the idea of Esspresoda sounds intriguing, the response from Japanese Internet users has been somewhat lukewarm. Some people apparently have not had good experience in the past with other carbonated tea or coffee drinks. Others feel that people may buy the drink once out of curiosity but are not likely to make repeat purchases. Regardless, the drink will probably attract a certain amount of attention when it comes out next month.

Espressoda will be sold at a price of 140 yen for a 330ml (11.22oz) bottle. Since sales of carbonated drinks have risen significantly in Japan in the past five years, I’m sure we can expect more interesting sodas from Suntory in the future, especially now that they have their new carbonating technology.

there used to be a brand of coffee flavored soda called Java Pop and I bought a few bottles of it a while back. It was pretty good stuff, definitely not everyone's thing but still good if you like coffee flavored stuff.

I hope my local international supermarket gets a few cases of this stuff, I'd happily buy it. I miss Java Pop.

I hope I can get that here locally when it gets released because I would definitely try it.

A few years ago Coca-Cola released a Coke Blak which was a blend of Coke and coffee which I really liked but it got discontinued within 2 years. I wonder if they taste would be similar.

I liked Coca-Cola Blak. I was disappointed when they stopped selling them - I think I had it twice before they eventually did that

I need to somehow remember that this fucking exists so I can go out and buy it when I get back Mid-August.

Also, this is just WTF enough that I want to make a video review of it! XP~~

It's more like, I don't want to forget about it's existence because I'll be in the US when it comes out. I NEED to try this out once I get back to Japan, NEED TO.

lovely_tunes 13th-Jun-2012 11:06 am (UTC)
ew

there's this gross drink sold in some places in Europe, called 'Coffaine', and it tastes like someone mixed coffee with coke. does the job of keeping you awake tho!

Sounds like an expensive and risky endeavor that Suntory is hoping will pay off. But from what I've seen Japan's not really big into soda (with a few notable exceptions), preferring regular tea and coffee drinks. I wonder if they wouldn't have more luck trying to introduce it to an overseas market first, although the 5.8 billion yen price tag may already negate that possibility.

sounds....disgusting.
mjspice 13th-Jun-2012 12:58 pm (UTC)
I dunno what to think about this tbh....

No one here lives in the US~

Monster's already had carbonated coffee for a while now. Although technically it's "monster-coffee" but all that means is extra sugar and caffeine...
stole_away 14th-Jun-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
want to try lol
