Celebrating 20 years of “Sailor Moon” + Momoiro Clover Z

This year Takeuchi Naoko is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her famous comic “Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon“. To properly celebrate this anniversary, there will be a special event on July 6th at Niccofarre in Tokyo.

Appearing at the event will be the Mitsuishi Kotono, the voice behind the series’ main character Tsukino Usagi/Sailor Moon. Joining her are Furuya Tooru (Chiba Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask), and Kodansha’s Osano Fumio.

The commemoration event will talk about the series and other works. Idol group Momorio Clover Z will make a special appearance at the event after coming back from ‘JAPAN EXPO 2012‘ in France.

Why don't I have a Sailor Moon icon for this?!

I wasn't a huge fan growing up - only got to see it now again - but after watching the entire series and all the movies recently, I love it. It's brilliant from all angles. It's magical, powerful, moving, strongly feminist (to the point where the male characters are often the ones being saved), romantic, and hilarious.

My favorite series (and I know unpopular opinion is unpopular) were SuperS and Sailor Stars. I understand why there was a lot of outrage at Sailor Stars (especially if you're a fan of the manga), but, and I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying this, Sailor Stars helped me appreciate the characters for who they were without paying any attention to their alternating genders and I think in that sense the producers and writers were quite ahead of their time (though this was possibly an accidental and unintentional benefit.)

I also feel like SuperS and Sailor Stars showed the most growth in Usagi's character. She became really, really strong through these two series, especially in how she was far less reliant on Mamoru. She loved him with all her heart, but she really came to understand that he couldn't always be there to help her and knew she had to often get the job done without him. Of all the changes she went through, this was the one I appreciated the most.

Your last part is the reason I love Sailor Moon SO MUCH (even though I fail and still haven't touched a managa)! The fact that she and the others all grows up at a reasonable pace within the story really stuck with me. I guess it added "a timeless real effect" to the story. I really just have a hard time with other shows that just have the characters cry babies one episode and the next they're the most capable character on the show.

BTW I totally understand where you're coming from about why those are your favorite series. I think it speaks a lot about who well the characters turned out for them to still be so...interesting even though all that stuff was done.

I like series where you can see the characters grow and change not just in their power levels or appearance, but in personality as well. Sailor Moon is one good example I can think of. Hikaru no Go is another and is a rare example that shows proper physical growth too. I would say Cardcaptor Sakura as well, but she was an angel to begin with so, even though she does change and mature a little and it's very natural, it's pretty small compared with the other two series because it happens in a shorter amount of time and is comparatively smaller.

Anyway, yes, I love it when we can really see character growth.
