Japan stun Spain in Olympic football

Japan scored a stunning upset of world champions Spain on Thursday in the Olympic football tournament as officials played down a flag blunder which prompted a protest from North Korea.

The greatest sporting show on earth will officially get under way on Friday, when around 80,000 VIPs and spectators will flock to the Olympic Stadium for an opening ceremony staged by Oscar-winning British movie director Danny Boyle.

However the sporting action kicked off with the opening matches of the women's football tournament at venues across Britain on Wednesday, and on Thursday it was the men's turn to take centre-stage.

While hosts Britain were due to face Senegal, it was Japan who provided the story of the day with a remarkable 1-0 win over a talented Spanish side aiming to add Olympic gold to their World Cup and Euro crowns.

Yuki Otsu was the hero for the Japanese, prodding home on 34 minutes to secure a victory which evoked memories of Japan's famous 1-0 win over Brazil in the Olympic tournament in 1996.

I think for Olympic Men Football, the age is set for under 23.. However they can send 3 more players that is above 23 to join the National Team.

yup, a Spain football team here, since 2008! :)

emm this piece is all wrong.

'though Spain team probably not in their best after winning EURO 2012'

First, the team that goes to the Olympics is not the same that went into Eurocup and the World Championship.

Usually they are boys over their 19/20's and not the main team, composed of professional League players, who won the last Eurocup.

well, if you read the comments above, people already explain that to me. Thus came the strikeout plus the "Not National team, got it" part.

Thanks for commenting anyway :)

yes, I read those later. However, they're also National team. Is only that here in Europe the are several different categories according to age, and each one has its own World and European Championships too.

Just wanted to point out that, because the age seems to be an important issue for most of the Olympic disciplines. Spain usually brings out the younger teams to such sports, except for Basketball, Hockey and Waterpolo. I guess that Soccer is more popular in Europe than most of the other sports, and their schedules are way too packed to also bring the whole pro-teams to Olympics, however, those players who are at age, can also participate, like happened with Jordi Alba.
