Korean netizens misinterprets Hikki's tweets

The currently on-hiatus Japanese-American singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru has her recent tweets misunderstood by Korean netizens (specifically Korean twitter users).

On her post dated August 11th, Utada tweeted about how she was glad for the Korean team who won against Japan in the men's soccer division and that they don't have to do military service anymore. However, some Korean twitter users misunderstood her tweets, ending up some in rant against her. It was then later explained by Utada herself:

IDK why Hikki's given this much stress.

Just to confirm, Hikki is American is she?

To be specific, US-citizen?

I believe she is. She was born in NY.

dual-citizen, i guess. She holds both Japanese and American citizenship but she's more prevalent to her American side.

But Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship...? She would be forced to choose either US citizenship or Japan's before she 22 y.o., no....?

If you got dual citizenship before 1985 then Japan will let you keep it. Hikki was born in 83, so that might be the case.

I didn't know this part (that you can keep your dual citizenship).

Cos in one article, I heard she was considered as US citizen, but at the same time, she paid the same amount of tax as other Japanese entertainers. Hence, my confusion.

Japan often doesn't seriously enforce this law... Much like many of its other laws.
