Horror movies recommended to scare away summer heat! So, Which Horror Movies are Popular in Japan?

It’s a fact of life that summers in Japan are hot and humid, and the Japanese people have a long history of trying to find ways to cool down in hot weather. One tradition that has come about as a result is the telling of terrifying horror stories in the summer, for the purpose of getting “chilled with terror”. And right now with the summer in full swing in Japan, we are indeed in need of some “chilling.”

Well, to help those of us desperate to feel just even a little bit cooler, Japanese entertainment group Culture Convenience Club (CCC), which operates Tsutaya, one of the largest DVD rental chains in Japan, has released a list of the 20 most-rented horror movies in Japan over the past three decades (1983 to 2012 to be exact). So, let’s see which movies made the list.

Below is the list published by CCC – they’ve even rated the “scare factor” of each film on a scale of one to three stars, with three being the scariest.

1. “The Sixth Sense” starring Bruce Willis, directed by M. Night Shyamalan ★★★
2. “Constantine” starring Keanu Reeves, directed by Francis Lawrence ★
3. “Van Helsing” starring Hugh Jackman, directed by Stephen Commers ★
4. “Juon“ (Japanese version of “The Grudge”) starring Megumi Okina, directed by Takashi Shimizu ★★★
5. “Ring” (Japanese version) starring Nanako Matusushima, directed by Hidoe Nakata ★★★
6. “Chakushin Ari” (One Missed Call) starring Ko Shibasaki, directed by Miike Takashi ★★
7. “Paranormal Activity” starring Katie Featherston, directed by Oren Peli ★★★
8. “28 Days Later…” starring Cillian Murphy, directed by Danny Boyle ★★
9. “Rasen” (second movie in the Japanese Ring series) starring Miki Nakatani, directed by Hideo Nakata ★★
10. “The Blair Witch Project” starring Michael C. Williams, directed by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez ★★★
11. “The Others” starring Nicole Kidman, directed by Alejandro Amenábar ★★★
12. “The Ring” starring Naomi Watts, directed by Gore Verbinski ★★
13. “Dawn of the Dead (2004)” starring Sarah Polley, directed by Zack Snyder ★★
14. “Juon 2″ (Japanese version) starring Noriko Sakai, directed by Takashi Shimizu ★★
15. “Chakushin Ari 2 (One Missed Call 2) starring Mimura, directed by Renpei Tsukamoto ★★
16. “Sleepy Hollow” starring Johnny Depp, directed by Tim Burton ★★
17. “Underworld: Evolution” starring Kate Beckinsale, directed by Len Wiseman ★
18. “Silent Hill” starring Radha Mitchell, directed by Christophe Gans ★★
19. “Ghost Ship” starring Julianna Margulies, directed by Steve Beck ★★
20. “Freddy vs. Jason” starring Robert Englund, directed by Ronny Yu ★★

So, what do you think? It’s not surprising to see movies from the “Ring” series, both the Japanese version and American version, make the list. There are some thoroughly terrifying classics like “The Exorcist”, “The Omen” or ”The Shining” that aren’t on the list, but I guess it’s difficult for older movies to rank high on a DVD rental list.

One movie I’m surprised is not on the list is “Cube” – now, that is one seriously scary movie which I would recommend to anyone who loves horror. I would also have expected to see “Saw” on the list, as the series was quite popular in Japan, but maybe the movie is a bit too gruesome to have mass appeal. Well, I’m sure you all have your favorite horror movies. Do let us know if there are any you can recommend to chill us to our bones on a hot summer night.

this list is okay, but I don't find J-horror all that scary rather really bizarre....my favorite is The Curse

Freddy vs Jason?? Seriously? It's like the worst "horror" movie i've seen so far. And some of the movies there aren't even scary at all :P.
mrjl_writer 21st-Aug-2012 05:43 am (UTC)
Pffft, neither Blair Witch nor The Others were scary AT ALL. The Others was suspenseful, and Blair Witch is just ridiculous (in a good way). If they want scary, put on all the old Halloween movies, the originals. Those were scary.
trex_in_boots 21st-Aug-2012 06:29 am (UTC)
I felt at the time Blair Witch was rather terrifying but since there are the other movies using just a regular old camera it's lost it's touch.
genie17 21st-Aug-2012 06:03 am (UTC)
The only ones that really scared me were The Ring and The grudge (Japanese versions of course).
trex_in_boots 21st-Aug-2012 06:27 am (UTC)
I'm not going to lie, I love Constantine and I'm damn proud of it.

Why on earth is Freddy vs. Jason on there?!
kazeyumi 21st-Aug-2012 06:52 am (UTC)
i love Constantine too! People laugh at me when I say I do though. haha
squallina 21st-Aug-2012 06:29 am (UTC)
I never found The Sixth Sense to be scary at all. I also feel there's a difference between something genuinely scary and something that's just really gory. Excessive gore doesn't necessarily = scary IMO. This is why I found the Japanese versions of Ring and Grudge scarier than their Western counterparts.

The "real ghost videos" tapes/DVDs give me a fright (even if they're fabricated). I just wish they'd skip the interviews and unnecessary backstory and play a lot more videos. You know the ones? Like the extra hand in the shot for a brief moment. It's funny while on TV with a shrieking audience, but it's really scary home alone with no TV audience and just the videos.
kazeyumi 21st-Aug-2012 06:53 am (UTC)
was Sixth Sense gory though? I remember watching when I was 12 or something and it scared the fuck out of me.
takarai_karin 21st-Aug-2012 06:36 am (UTC)
I would also have expected to see “Saw”

I don't even consider that a horror movie, as I don't consider 'gore' as horror, TBH

IMO 'Chakushin Ari' deserve three stars. That's a damn scary movie. The scariest horror movies I've watched are all Japanese and Thai-made.

THIS. I feel there is a difference between being repulsed and being genuinely scared.
icehism 21st-Aug-2012 06:47 am (UTC)
There are so much non-scary movies on this list. I am disappointed.

Surprised at the lack of J-horror tbh
nuriko 21st-Aug-2012 06:47 am (UTC)
Why does it say "Japanese version of 'The Grudge'" as if the Japanese one's the remake? That just threw me off, because I am nitpicky.
stole_away 21st-Aug-2012 07:40 am (UTC)
ikr, they shld at least name it (original) or smthg
stole_away 21st-Aug-2012 07:40 am (UTC)
i like constantine and van helsing tho. not a fan of horror movies and juon made me have nightmares for 3 mths ;(
hisjulliet 21st-Aug-2012 07:44 am (UTC)
I would love to say what my favorite Japanese Horror film is, but

I hate horror films lol
taecish 21st-Aug-2012 07:48 am (UTC)
this is one of the worst lists i've ever seen lol
sixth sense is hardly even a horror film
izabera 21st-Aug-2012 03:52 pm (UTC)
mte, quite a few on the list are psychological thrillers rather than horror movies
hamimifk 21st-Aug-2012 08:06 am (UTC)
I actually like the large majority of these movies (with 28 Days Later being my one of my absolute favorite movies of ever, so fluck yeah for it making the list! Also, another fluck yeah! for Silent Hill and Ghost Ship!), but not many of them I found 'that' scary. Some were just creepy or more psychological mindfluck (which I enjoy).

But ugh... The Ring movies are not scary, I never get why they freak out people (I figure they scare people not use to horror movies?). I never saw the Japanese versions so I have no opinion about them. The scariest three here are Chakushin Ari, Silent Hill, and Juon 2, IMO, of course.

Anyway, my personal favorite horror movies are 28 Days Later, Silent Hill, and the Hellraiser movies (but not that last one - the one without Doug Bradley. OMG, that thing was SO. BAD. x.x ).

One movie I’m surprised is not on the list is “Cube” – now, that is one seriously scary movie which I would recommend to anyone who loves horror.

I love the Cube movies too! All three of them! =\ But I think they qualify more as 'Sci-Fi' than straight out horror. (But I also rec them if you like movies that keep you guessing!)
squallina 21st-Aug-2012 08:35 am (UTC)
I watched the Silent Hill movie and couldn't make much sense out of it. I was more confused than scared by it.
vicinity_love 21st-Aug-2012 08:17 am (UTC)
I've just always loved Wishing Stairs. I have no clue why, its just always been one of my bias movies.
reki 21st-Aug-2012 08:24 am (UTC)
It's a little awkward but... I've watched them all already.
phililen3 21st-Aug-2012 09:27 am (UTC)
Constantine is a fave of mine but I just don't see it as a horror. Maybe it is because I don't find it scary at all... Horrors are supposed to scare you right?
arashic5 21st-Aug-2012 10:18 am (UTC)
Juon scared the shit out of me ngl
xanderave 21st-Aug-2012 11:36 am (UTC)
Horror movies with Thai background are not bad at all like Shutter (the original version) and The Eye series.
j_linker444 21st-Aug-2012 12:29 pm (UTC)
Did anybody see SADAKO 3D? I totally laughed throughout the film though I kinda enjoyed anyway.
Recommendation on the scariest Japanese Horror movie/s you've watched (minus gore pls)?

I don't know if all of these movies can be considered as 'horror'.

Not a j-horror movie, but I highly recommend 'Darkness',I didn't expect too much at first but it was awesome, and everyone who has seen it says so.
morroska 21st-Aug-2012 04:56 pm (UTC)
kairo and cure. kairo made me have nightmares for weeks and cure had one really disturbing scene.

I've seen them all except for Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project and Dawn of the Dead. Simply because I hate camera-POV movies and the zombies genre. And yeah, I don't like gore.
looking forward till I can see Sadako 3D ^^
