Koki's Nazi uniform causes controversy

Tanaka Koki, member of the popular Johnny's idol group, KAT-TUN, has been stirring up some controvery recently as his new PV "Black or White" was leaked on to the internet. So what's the big deal? Some netizens are upset that Koki is dressed in full, Nazi uniform. The full PV can be viewed here.

To be specific, Koki sports the notorious SS black uniform, which was used from 1932 to 1934 in Nazi Germany. The SS uniform was worn specifically by people who worked in concentration camps and closest to the Third Reich. The PV features him dancing in the Nazi garb, while switching between scenes of him being experimented on. The SS was also notorious for conducting horrendous "medical experiments" on many Jews in concentration camps.

Koki's uniform shows off several Nazi era paraphernalia, including:

The Third Reich Eagle Emblem

The Third Reich government adopted the eagle as a national symbol (Hoheitszeichen), in common with previous German governments and several other European countries. Originally, the design was to show the eagle's head facing to its right when used as a national symbol, and to its left when used as a Nazi Party symbol, but this convention was not always followed. The eagle's claws were to grasp a wreath of oak leaves surrounding a swastika.

The Iron Cross

The Iron Cross was used as the symbol of the German Army from 1871 to March/April 1918, when it was replaced by a simpler Greek cross. In 1956, the Iron Cross resumed its German military usage, as it became the symbol of the Bundeswehr, the modern German armed forces.

However, the Nazi swastika band cannot be seen on his arm.

Many netizens have voiced their concerns over the PV, including:

"That PV is disgusting, not only the SS uniform but also the experiment bits...Japanese groups have been called out for this shit before, he must've known. This is a disgusting grab for attention and it will work,"

"lol i don't get why you are all reacting so badly. okay well i do, but it's been done before and it shouldn't be a huge deal anymore. vk bands have dressed up with the actual nazi-swastika attached to their costume. for years and years and years."

It is widely known that the Japanese were allied with Germany during World War 2. However, many Japanese are still uneducated on the full extent of the atrocities done by the Axis Powers during the war.

If anyone cared to watch the PV, they will see that it depicts the evil/bad guy versus the hero/good guy. And what can depict evil itself more than nazi to our world !? Satan itself isn't bad enough in people's eyes...

Lol. I'm from Germany and I didn't think about it even for a second until I've read this article.
God I seriously wonder when people will be over it, it gets annoying. (reminds me also about the whole scandal with Sho and his hand movement)

Awesome pv is awesome, and seriously...let's face it: This guy just has a fetish for Uniforms. (he was wearing nearly the same one in the chain concerts too)
cherrycoloured 9th-Sep-2012 04:48 pm (UTC)
Why should we get over it? I'm Jewish, and it really bothers me when people take the Holocaust so lightly. It's not just the uniforms, it also him being experimented on that makes it so awful. If it doesn't bother you, that's fine, but please respect that it does upset others and don't tell us to get over it.
lovekame02 9th-Sep-2012 04:43 pm (UTC)
trolololololololol XD
I really don't think Koki knew what that uniform is about, I didn't even knew it myself and my country has a long history with the Nazi...
If anyone is to be blamed then that's the desinger XD
Other than that I enjoyed the PV and Koki :P

I'm really sensitive to this sort of stuff so I'm not going to watch the video, but he's really getting experimented on in it? Yeah, that can't even be defended as he just thinks it looks cool and doesn't know the history (which I don't like as an excuse either). That's seriously disgusting :\
vivibm 9th-Sep-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
The post is wrong. yeah there is an experiment, but there are 2 characters, the "black koki" and the "white". They are separate !
The PV denounces what nazism did, not the contrary.
lovebum4life 9th-Sep-2012 04:45 pm (UTC)
what a dumbasss

video looks hot tho
glider 9th-Sep-2012 04:50 pm (UTC)
so why did this need to be a PV concept at all

I guess the real problem here is that maybe his costume is too accurate? they really could've just left off the Iron Cross or the small details on the hat and it would've still showed the idea that it's meant to emulate Nazis (representing evil). this type of imagery tends to make people extremely uncomfortable, though AFAIK Japan isn't exactly the best at teaching global history so I feel that they put much less emphasis culturally on the institution of Nazism.

Yes, all of this.

There is no need to make a PV concept out of such a sensitive subject.
There are other ways of portraying bad guys (it happens in PVs and movies all the time).

But dressing up like a Nazi, singing and dancing around in this uniform to entertain your fans is just tasteless, in my eyes.
baboy_19 9th-Sep-2012 04:54 pm (UTC)
lol..Tell that to the costume designer.. XD

Uhhh... why did I even click on this. I told myself not watch KAT-TUN and Koki new PV and also the songs from their single until the official release date. Which, I still haven't. But, I'll say what I think once I watch it on the release date ^^
seelenlicht 9th-Sep-2012 05:03 pm (UTC)
Haha. Well you see. The pvs aren't even released officially and yet we already have the drama.
Great job lord.

I wondered how long it would take before somebody started complaining about the uniform. People can't be satisfied no matter what. Like somebody already said: "it is part of the good vs evil concept" Still...people that are offended have a right to feel offended. People that are not offended have a right to ask WTF?! and then go on with their lives. He could have been completely naked and somebody still would have complained. Not me...but somebody.

i prefer naked Koki anytime of the day too btw
uledy 9th-Sep-2012 05:17 pm (UTC)
Very poor choice in concept and costume, especially done by someone from an Axis nation...yikes...

But for real, this PV...it's so fucking bad. The dancing, the acting, the wind machine, the comical and random Black guy...I can't even...

nekobot01 9th-Sep-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
+1

The whole thing looks like it cost 50 cents plus the rental fee on the Nazi uniform from the History Channel.
mele_3_4 9th-Sep-2012 05:23 pm (UTC)
I don't think Koki is a Nazi supporter or anything like that but I think depicting the evil vs good concept in a pv that contains Nazi themes was incredibly inappropriate. I think they were just using it to represent a renown symbol of evil within the history of humanity but even if there was no ill-intent, it makes me uncomfortable that they reduced an actual piece of history to a cheap pv plot. They could have gotten the message across without the Nazi symbolism but instead they used references to a real regime with real victims. Victims of the holocaust were not able to overcome the evil of the Nazi regime with their own pureness or goodness and it is insulting to their pain and suffering to reduce it to a movie concept.
yuuki_saya 9th-Sep-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
The thing is, that very probably (I'm not a specialist, but I can assume) only 2 elements of this uniform can be linked to Nazi. Other parts are like taken from South America or North Africa higher officer. Very randomly.
daika91 9th-Sep-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
kokiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!! fuck sexy pv! >w< it's no nazi dear ahahah hyphens forever#<3
And you don't like?? don't watch eheheh ^^

nekobot01 9th-Sep-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
Ugh. What the fuck? I could get through 1:30.

First of all: The song is played out rap-rock and the choreography is really boring.

But leaving that aside for the moment, this PV looks like somebody wanted to mix Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" with a reductivist take on "Good v. Evil" and decided to borrow Prince Harry's Halloween costume from a few years ago to stick Koki in.

The whole thing with an "evil" black guy is so tired that it's hard to get angry about it...

Is Koki a Nazi? No.

Is this a lazy and cheap-looking PV? Yes.

Should the costume designer probably not have picked a Nazi uniform off the rack? Definitely, but I can only assume there was no money to design an original costume.

KATTUN is really scraping the bottom of the creativity barrel. Johnny should just put them out of their misery and let Kame just pursue his acting, like Toma does. We'd all be happier.
kame09 10th-Sep-2012 04:50 am (UTC)
Uhm sorry but no lol
fauxparadiso 9th-Sep-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
I don't care about differing opinions about this outfit, but anyone who says "Just get over it" is ignorant and disgustingly insensitive. It hasn't even been 100 years since WWII occured. That means there are still survivors or direct descendants of those who were subjugated to Nazi rule.

You don't get to negate other peoples' experiences just because time has passed.
Tanja Krueger 9th-Sep-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
Sorry but...
You are not German. You don't know how it is to have always this stupid 'Nazi-Image'.
Really, it's tiring and annoying.
I'm not disrespectful and I don't say people should be over it..
But what has the stuff to do with a UNIFORM?!
It's similar but it's not the same.
Should I cry around now about every army uniform? You even know what American has done in Germany in the war?
No, Germans don't cry around because of it... We think it's horrible what happens but to make a drama about a UNIFORM!!
It's so annoying.
ih8je 9th-Sep-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)

well well well

looks like someone is desperate for attention with a cheap, crappy, Nazi imitating PV.

it doesn't matter a flop will always be a flop.
ylunio 9th-Sep-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
Yes, there are medical experiments in this video, just like X-men's Wolverine, and Koki is dressed like Street Fighter's M. Bison (or Vega if you are Japanese)...

Oh, please... ''=_=
bleed_peroxide 9th-Sep-2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
I'm guessing the fact that it's connected to the Nazi's medical experiments went right the fuck over your head?

XDD....seriously...i watched this PV twice...what i can comment is.."I Don't Un...."
firstly I dun care about d so call Nazi uniform thingy..cuz...a lot of ppl out there nowadays wearing different army uniform..so what if the PV accidentally make Koki wear Nazi uniform....seriously for me i dun care~~... ;) dun forgot he previously wear uniform during CHAIN concert performing his Dangerous Cat~~ =.=
I Don't Un is tat d overall story of d PV...even d music is an Rockish song..quite difficult to create a PV...
what i un is Koki feeling...because..Koki is d 1st 1 who make his own Solo PV...he must feeling pressure & he does mention he totally no idea..till d last minute spark~~...anyway..Koki try his best already~~^^

Peace Y^.^

what is this comment
Tanja Krueger 9th-Sep-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
It's not a full SS uniform. It's just a similar style.
And I understood the PV like it's not 'him' it's a kind of 'robot' who get experiments.
The Iron Cross is still today a medal for our 'Bundeswehr'.
Our 'Reichsadler' is still also an important symbol for us - he wear it WITHOUT 'Hakenkreuz' (swastika).
Yeah, it has a similar style, but .. who cares?
I don't even care and I'm German. LOL
But yeah, when I say it I'm Nazi, like always, because I'm German. It's still in the heads of too many people. I don't say people should forget about it but people should finally calm down. It's so annoying.

I don't think Koki wants to be disrespectful or something like that. And at least when I first saw it I didn't think "Oh! He cosplays a Nazi!"
I think the meaning behind it is more 'Good vs. Bad'. But I don't understand the lyrics now.. Can somebody here says what the song is about who is better in Japanese then me?

But yeah, it's always like that. Complaining, complaining. Gosh. There are so many PV's with people in uniform. It's so tiring already.. but yeah. Should I now complain every American PV where someone is a soldier? Calm down. It's so tiring.

*sighs*
I wasn't even speaking about that people should get over the second world war because this is impossible, but more that they should get over the fact that Jp. ppl OFTEN use something like this ins pv's and other stuff without giving it a second thought.
Tanja Krueger 9th-Sep-2012 05:48 pm (UTC)
Well.. but this here has the topic "Good vs. Bad" - so even if you THINK about it, it hasn't a back background. Because at the end the 'Good' can escape and fight against the Bad.
artcika 9th-Sep-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
lol looks like only GACKT can get away with mimicing nazi uniform & turned himself into a cyborg due to some experiments of the army leaders....or something...

F*cking trifling not even gonna watch.

VERY poor costume choice/theme. i think the designer and whoever thought of this concept needs to do they damn homework or maybe just given a quick history lesson so shit like this can be prevented.

wearing the costume is ignorant/insensitive and inappropriate and i'm i know damn well koki knows the history behind it so no excuses.

artcika 9th-Sep-2012 06:03 pm (UTC)
also i've got to say, people get overworked with stuff as simple as that, c'mmon it's just a stupid PV, it probbaly was not even hos own idea....also a costume is just a costume..... jeeez... >_> plus at least is HAS a theame....cuz most of the j-pop/rock vids just have pretty guys dancing/playing around in a studio with random background.
calcetinita 9th-Sep-2012 06:10 pm (UTC)
I will limit myself to one comment. Anything else would be bad for my blood pressure and this case is very clear, there isn't even room for discussion.

Let's break it down: Koki, nazi uniform, experiments, good wins in the end

Koki is an idol and he surely isn't in a position to micromanage every detail in this video or the rest of career. But he always has a choice to say no. Any discussion about this needs to start with the acceptance that Koki is a free man and that he agreed to this.

Nazi uniforms. It's not a uniform from Wolverine. It's not a uniform from a movie or game. It's the uniform of mass murderers and while they left out the red band, the attention to detail is astounding. Someone wanted this to look like a SS uniform. Don't deny it.

Experiments on humans were done in concentration camps. This alone wouldn't suffice as a reason to raise eyebrows but coupled with the uniform it's a very clear picture. One that unfortunately makes the common excuse of "he didn't know" very unbelievable.

Good wins in the end. And everyone is happy. Everyone except those who know that the real victims of nazis couldn't just tear at their chains and have a dance-off with the "herrenrasse". To ignore this in order to end a music video on a feel good note is probably the height of ignorance.

This video is an embarrassment. It doesn't make Koki a nazi but it makes everyone who defends it a very suspect person. For the German anons who feel attacked, the way to learn from the past is to accept what happened and not deny it. Nobody is attacking you. This whole thing isn't about you. It's about someone using a very sensitive subject to promote a CD release. He is dancing in a nazi uniform to make money. He and everyone who worked on that video didn't care enough about the real history and the real people affected by it to look for another costume. People have every right to be shocked, disgusted and disappointed with this. If it doesn't cause you any emotional harm and you like the PV as it is, then have fun with it. But don't try to deny the nazi symbolism in it or the very real reasons why people are upset. That doesn't help Koki or KAT-TUN. That just makes you look bad.
