Netizens Refuse to Believe that Nakai Masahiro was Poor

SMAP‘s Nakai Masahiro is one of the multi-millionaires in the industry, earning as much as 700 million Yen just from his TV shows and CMs, so it was quite a surprise when he shared his impoverished childhood.

As reported,

Last Oct 31st, SMAP’s Nakai Masahiro featured well-to-do guests for his NTV program titled “Nakai no Mado“. In the said episode with theme “rich in gold but poor in heart”, Nakai’s guests were born rich, never had problems with money, and can buy or give expensive items. After listening to their stories, Nakai can’t help but share his childhood home.

According to Nakai, there are times when they can’t buy enough rice for the entire family because they have little money. There is no bath in the house. The rooms were small, only 4 tatami mats, and five family members sleeps in one room. Eating a Yoshinoya beef bowl is too expensive, so they settle for McDonald’s once in a while. He will be pinch by his parent if he chose medium-sized burger and drinks instead of the small one. It’s hard to imagine that Nakai’s childhood home was that poor.

Afterwards, netizens commented on Nakai’s story, like:

  • Old McDonald’s is by no means cheap.
  • Isn’t the hamburger only 210Yen when Nakai was a kid? If he can’t afford it, then he must be really poor.
  • Doesn’t mean anything coming from a millionaire.
  • Nothing but a lie! He even went to Hiratsuka (private) School.
  • Pls. remember that in old days, it’s already considered a feast if you eat rice with butter or soy sauce.

Nakai often exaggerates stories in his own shows for amusement factor's sake, but just because he's made a fuckton of money for himself he can't have had it rough? Like success somehow invalidates all and any hardships a person has experienced? Wow, srsly...

He even went to Hiratsuka (private) School.
For a single year, as a high school freshman, and I'm not sure if he even finished said year there. I remember reading he transfered mid-way. Every other school he's attended was public.

Nakai's said a lot of times that's how it was in his house too.

Sure, I doubt he's ever faced legit extreme poverty conditions, but I don't see what's so impossible in him having been brought up in a low-class household with a tight budget.

I commented on my own later down in the page but,

I currently teach at the high school he went to before transfering out because of SMAP, and back in his day that place was a all-boys yankee hell school that no one with money would have sent their kids too, so it being prviate means jack shit.

Heck, there was a lack of good schools because the area is full of working class people, the school even went and turned itself into a really good school because of this.

Nakai's childhood as he told it is utterly believable to anyone who has lived where he grew up.

I can't know how his younger years were in reality, and i get that for people who have money problems listening to such things may be annoying but i don't think it doesn't mean anything coming from him(assuming the story is true).

I would side eye too, lots of successful people exaggerate their past in order to make their rise to fame all that more amazing~ and interesting~

If he had money he would ended in baseball, but they didn't have money for his surgery, so he went to JE. This stories should be from his birth to entering of JE, at least he changed school because he was busy with SMAP.
edneichon 10th-Nov-2012 08:03 pm (UTC)
Oh well~ so be it if he wants to share part of his past, though he is talking when he was a very young kid~ how many years has he been on tv? ...yeah, too much water under the bridge since that period he had to endure~
Anyway Nakai has work a lot and very hard for being where he is now. Hardwork pays off.

It doesn't sound like his family was really, really poor, but it seems pretty far from comfortable. They probably lived paycheck to paycheck, and mom had to be strict with the household finances and keep luxury spending to a minimum.

How do the netizens thinks he is? It sounds like they think he grew up after WWII
haruno21 11th-Nov-2012 03:24 am (UTC)
I dont really know if the story true or not rly but I´m shaking my head at people implying being poor is sth to be ashamed of
rim1789 11th-Nov-2012 03:40 am (UTC)
True or false, how can '' Because you re now a millionaire thanks to your job, you HAD to have been rich too when you were a kid'' be a possible argument Oo ?
urubaby21 11th-Nov-2012 04:48 am (UTC)
Oh netizens, you never fail to amuse me.
exdream1999 HE WENT TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL!%!@^$%#65eyjGFJb11th-Nov-2012 06:41 am (UTC)
LOL, Japanese people should know that attending a private school means jack shit as to whether or not you have money.

Also, for the record, I teach at the school he went to in Hirasuka and back when he was there it had a terrible reputation and was an all boys school full of yankees and no one with any money would have sent their kid there. (Also, he didn't graduate from there because SMAP then debuted and he ended up probably going to that school in Tokyo because him and Kimura graduated together.)

Though, if these dumb netizens hadn't done their research that might have based it on the school's current standing which is very good as the current principal has worked hard to make it a good school.

Also, the Shonan area is full of a lot of working class people, so, I totally believe his story.

No problem!

The stupid in this article turned out to be the kind I can 100% prove as wrong, just wish I could shove it all those netizen's faces though. >.
december_clouds 11th-Nov-2012 08:11 am (UTC)
He may not be lying about this. He could've gotten a scholarship to a private school or they could have had really low fees. Someone else in this thread said the school wasn't that great.
litofroggy 11th-Nov-2012 02:24 pm (UTC)
Believable.

He's never talked about his past or parents on air before.
Besides, wasn't japan THAT poor AFTER WWII? So won't it make sense that Nakai's family was poor?
tv_dramas 11th-Nov-2012 03:19 pm (UTC)
that's not entirely true, he talked about his family before - about not being rich
on Kurobara (one of his show) they even made the 3 dish he and his brothers usually eat as kids (they were rice with vineger or wasabi) - and I heard him tell story once about going to the bank to drink water there (from the server I think)
exdream1999 12th-Nov-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
For their 10th anniversary concert his solo featured both his older brother, his grandmother, and his father.

Also, he talks about his friends ALL THE TIME and about how rough they are.

Plus, my comment pretty much backs up everything he says, considered that I live and work in the area where he grew up.

P.S. Japan was dirt poor right after WWII and wasn't seen as recovered until about the 70's, which was Nakai was born, but that still doesn't mean that everyone in Japan had a lot of money.
stole_away 11th-Nov-2012 03:33 pm (UTC)
he mentioned in kurobara that his family ate 1. rice with soysauce 2. rice with butter 3. rice with water (when they have no $ to get butter or smthg)

And seriously, not all rich people are born rich, people should get this into their heads ugh
ryu_23 11th-Nov-2012 04:21 pm (UTC)
I really shocked. But I don't think it's true...
exdream1999 12th-Nov-2012 12:16 am (UTC)
It's true.

I wrote a whole comment to explain why Nakai's story is legit, but if you want the cliffnotes version: I currently live and work in the area where Nakai's from.
