New TV War Brewing in Johnny’s?

It has been rumored that Arashi and Kanjani8‘s variety program will come to an end since a new backer, in the name of Suzuki Osamu, have appeared for  Kis-my-Ft2 and KAT-TUN

As reported,

Kanjani8 is seen as Arashi’s successor while Arashi is more popular than SMAP now. These two groups seem to dominate  TV programs next year; however, some speculations have arisen that that won’t be the case.

Arashi and Kanjani8′s TV program haven’t been getting good ratings, although they enjoyed good ratings in the past, it has became dragging since there is nothing new with their program format. Meanwhile, Kisumai and KAT-TUN’s popularity is increasing. Their TV programs is getting rave reviews despite their midnight timeslot, especially with Kisumai’s show that is said to be viewer-friendly.

Big-shot TV writer Suzuki Osamu, who is known for writing, “Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru”, is said to give Kisumai and KAT-TUN a breakthrough. Suzuki has been writing for SMAP’s “SMAPxSMAP” and have also composed songs for their albums. Suzuki is said to be part of “Iijima’s faction” and Iijima managed SMAP and Kisumai careers. Since Suzuki is known for being a top-rated TV contractor, he promised two sets of TV shows to break next year. (according to people concerned in commercial broadcasting)

Will Arashi and Kanjani8 make a counterattack?

yeah, right...

off topic but I found this on twitter..

Ranking of Johnny's fan clubs per group:

Arashi: 1.25million / SMAP: 900k / Kinki Kids: 450k / K8: 250k / V6: 230k / KAT-TUN: 120k / TOKIO: 110k

T&T: 110k / Kisumai: 100k / NEWS: 80k / Yamapi: 60k

doubt it if Arashi and Kanjani8 are losing their popularity..

thanks for the info!
I think 100k is a good number for a new group like Kisumai who just has their own fanclub recently.
But where are those fans in V6 and TOKIO fanclub when they released singles and albums? Their sales are getting worse ...

Hmm...I haven't watched Kat-tun or Kisumai' members interaction before, so Idk what to say. All I know that Arashi attracts me with their bond or close relationship which is shown in every variety shows they have. I'm sure VSA have good ratings, though idk about HnA or AniShi (correct if I'm wrong). And I think I've read from varied sources that's Japanese audiences like Arashi because of that. The reason that they are the most popular now, aside from very good promotion and management, is because they have good interaction/relationship between members.
Kanjani8 seems to have good interaction as well. Anyone can tell me about Kat-tun and Kisumai?
fierysunrise 15th-Nov-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
I don't know about Kisumai, but for KAT-TUN they do. There's just not much to show it. They mostly only show KAT-TUN's interactions with each other during game section of the making of PVs.

it has became dragging since there is nothing new with their program format

but they've changed their formats this year ...

oh and I love how the author used this pic because show was a damn success, completely contradicting the article...

Yeah seriously. They're introducing new segments and stuff to their shows all the time. -_-
whited_79 Lies (especially concerning Kanjani8)15th-Nov-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
this is pretty much bull!

Kanjani8's primetime show on TV Asahi, Shiwake Eito's latest episode has gotten one of their best ratings yet, almost 14% in Kanto and more than 16% in Kansai...their midnight show Janiben has just been renewed this season and still getting good rating for a 1-hour show at a midnight I really don't know where the "dragging" assumption even comes from...
reddiereds 16th-Nov-2012 12:59 am (UTC)
arrrh! thanks for the info! i never had good luck finding K8's variety shows' rating info.

in 8EST bonus footage where they're filming the 'center wo mezashite' meeting for 8sai, I believe Yoko/J&A arranged it so that it looked like they're going for Shiwake meeting. and during the footage showing Maru coming in, i saw two 12.2% posted on the glass door. i was wondering whether it's good enough, but seeing how Tacchon gets really well known as 'taiko no tetsujin' i guess it's good (enough).
yuuki_saya 15th-Nov-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)

Srsly, you believe that Arashi or K8 are on their downfall? Please... I'm KAT-TUN's fan, I love them so much, but I know that their place isn't near Arashi's. Still, I'm proud of them, after all they survived a lot.

I'll believe when KAT-TUN's sales will be higher than Arashi's.
kanaala 15th-Nov-2012 05:58 pm (UTC)
KAT-TUN's popularity is increasing? Lol... not that I heard of it. What did they base this on? LOL
What a joke.

:OOO Don't take away my beloved Arashi shows!!! And also: why Kanjani?? They are my second favorite! xD
Also I don't think that Arashi and K8 are losing popularity... look at their sales... If they can't get awesome ratings I doubt that Kat-tun (I like them BUT...) or Kisumai can get better ones in the same timeslot... well perhaps in the beginning, since it would be something new^^
And: kinda off topic but I loved the episode from the picture <3

I just hope Busaiku (Kisumai's show) will become regular ...

All things aside,Himitsu no Arashi-chan has changed format so many times already,it would have been better if they've stopped at the third one,the last ones are not working at all.

Despite the smaller CD/DVD sales, doesn't SMAP still draw in the highest viewing figures? I think Arashi has yet to reach that level, but they're not exactly plummeting either so no worries of other groups overhauling them. I hated Shiyagare right from the start though. Still do. Oh, the woes of fame when they can't get up to the crap they used to; it was so much fun in the past. One of the reasons why I switched my allegiance to Kanjani8 these days :)
asth77 15th-Nov-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
"it was so much fun in the past"

so true.
the best Johnny's shows ever. Make me want to re-watch them brb
gloriaseable 15th-Nov-2012 07:37 pm (UTC)
I'm fan of Kat-tun and Arashi, I really like them both, but the friendship that there is in Arashi is not visible in Kat-tun. I think that in Kat tun the friend of all four members is Nakamaru . I like both, but there is no comparison in the feelings that they communicate. As there is no comparison in sales. Arashi with Popcorn is the best-selling album in the world. Not comment on the new, really old groups, which have a lot of publicity lately.I like very much Arashi share hause with all five members.

Kind of unrelated, but what variety shows does V6 have going on atm? I've been so out of the loop lately regarding their recent activity :(
1foxmulder 15th-Nov-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
V6 has a new show called Gacha gacha V6 that replaced Otoko no hen-sachi. Currently, each member is busy with his own individual projects like tv shows, plays and movies.

i'm taking this with a pinch of salt, but i have a gut feeling that this may turnout to have more validity than expected. and well people, let's stay on topic shall we?
nowhere in the article is it stated that Arashi and Eitos are losing their popularity per se. but the tv programs, at least for Arashi, i can say i agree that there are more and more boring episodes esp. for HnA and AniS compared to circa 2006 - 2009.

at any rate, as much as i'd love a new tv show spotlight for KT and kisumai, i think both Arashi and Kanjani8 can still provide more entertainment value for a wider variety of viewers. by all means, give new shows with better budgets to the Iijima groups, but leave Arashi and Kanjani8 be.

Will Arashi and Kanjani8 make a counterattack? yes i definitely think so. if need be, a tv show reformat can be the simple resolution.
awkward_as_heck 15th-Nov-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
Arashi have needed a show overhaul for a while. I don't know anything about the current ratings but a few of my Japanese friends have said they've been really bored by Arashi's TV shows recently. K8's seem to be doing pretty well though.

I'd defeinately like to see KAT-TUN get a better time slot and maybe even a talk show but Kisumai need to stay where they are and prove themselves in the midnight slot first, they're still only on their first show and not even a year in yet.

Older shows and newer shows.
Also, rating is not exactly the most reliable factor these days to determine popularity since there are many fans who time-record their favorite shows.
niwiwin 15th-Nov-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
Popular or not, the TV stations only care about ratings.
What good does people recording do to them?
The money comes from advertising, and so they only care about how many people watch live.
stbluemoon 15th-Nov-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
Osamu is a talented producer, but sometimes I feel he's stretched so thin across the numerous programs he has that some of the standards are beginning to falter. But he still mostly works with SMAP and only recently Kisumai (I don't think he's doing any KAT-TUN programs...?), so there's hardly a trend that he's beginning to work with more groups under Iijima's wing.
exdream1999 15th-Nov-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
I think everyone is forgetting one variable in this equation.

His wife.

Ohshima Miyuki.

Professional Arashi Fangirl.

Like he would get away with doing something that would be seen as an "attack" against Arashi.

P.S. This is said with tounge firmly in cheek because, LBR, any inter-Johnny's "rivalry" is really nothing much because they're only goal is to get as much as yen as possible, so why would they "atack" and "counter-attack" each other?
2hothere 15th-Nov-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
they're only goal is to get as much as yen as possible, so why would they "atack" and "counter-attack" each other?

my guess is it's because of the competition between Julie and Iijima to get the President title once Johnny retires.
riechan0509 15th-Nov-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
I doubt that Arashi and Kanjani8 will lose popularity. Look, Arashi's POPCORN is certified TRIPLE PLATINUM, Eito's 8EST is certified PLATINUM. That only proves that there are still lots of supporters for both groups, thus they're popular! Ok, Arashi's shows are now becoming boring, unlike before, but that's not the only basis for the group's popularity.
dramaticsurgeon 16th-Nov-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
Hmm...I find the idea behind the article interesting. Although there are points I disagree with, it's true that an artist's popularity isn't always proportionate with their TV ratings. Especially in a world where you can pretty much watch whatever you want, whenever you want, if your favorite artist just isn't doing anything interesting on TV, you'll change the channel.

Although I greatly enjoy VS Arashi, I find I'm guilty of losing interest during the parts that seem to drag a little. HnA just hasn't been the same since switching to the VIP limo, and now the Share house model; I know the producers did it because the original format was losing ratings, but they haven't really found their niche for that show yet. AnS definitely has its moments, but overall I find the anikis just take up too much air time on many episodes.

I almost prefer the old A/C/D/etc. no Arashi format, where they didn't do anything particularly spectacular but you could tell they had fun doing it. Right now it's mostly them smiling and nodding as someone else talks--though I do like the challenges set forth in AnS, that often come with brilliant (or hilarious) results. To be honest, so far the only Share House I watched 100% was the special with all 5 of them.
kyun_spark 16th-Nov-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
just want to laugh at :
Kanjani8 is seen as Arashi’s successor
while they're pretty much in the same generation and no way eito will surpass arashi... Eito need Arashi to look up to (or complain about in their show) xDD
michannosekai 16th-Nov-2012 02:52 am (UTC)
Yes. Very true.
luckylightangel 16th-Nov-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
So what faction KAT-TUN belongs to? From what I know SMAP and Kisumai is Iijima's faction and Arashi is Julie's
2hothere 16th-Nov-2012 03:13 am (UTC)

Kanjani8 and KAT-TUN are under Julie's.
