Japan’s “Rent-a-Boyfriend” Dispatch Service

Soine-ya Prime, a dispatch service where women can hire a handsome young man to lay with her in bed for a night.

While unrelated to the male-oriented Soine-ya in Akihabara—which, by the way, has been doing so well that they’ve recently opened up a second shop in Shinjuku— Soine-ya Prime also believes that there are just some nights when we crave the warmth of another human beside us to the point that we’d be willing to pay a complete stranger to do it.

Soine-ya Prime opened shop in 2011 and seems to be inspired by Shimshima, a television drama that aired the same year about a woman who has trouble sleeping after coming out of a divorce. The woman finds that just laying alongside a man at night enables her to sleep peacefully and she starts a soine-ya (lit: “sleep together shop”) business that dispatches young men to sleep with lonely women.

shimashima^The drama’s catchphrase, ”Sleeping with men makes women stronger”, sent an empowering message to women across the country.

Soine-ya Prime acknowledges its roots with a link to the Shimshima website at the bottom of their homepage and asserts that, like the business in the drama, it does not offer any sexual services to clients.

So what can you do with the “cast”, as they call their male employees. According to the site, you can:

・Sleep in his arms
・Go out for a date (all costs must be borne by the client)
・Have him clean for you (Simple cleaning tasks like vacuuming, etc., so long as it’s nothing discomforting)
・Eat together at a restaurant (all costs must be borne by the client)
・Have him cook for you (ingredients must be prepared by the client)

And here’s what clients are forbidden from doing:

・Touching his genitals or reaching under his clothes
・Taking a shower or bath together
・Kissing or other intimate contact not specified in the service outline
・Anything that would sexually arouse him
・Contacting him in private without the permission of Soine-ya Prime
・Hidden photography, wiretapping, etc.

They also add that they do not accept clients who use narcotics, have a dirty house, or are scouting for other establishments.

Pricing for the “Standard Plan”, which covers all of the above services, starts at 30,000 yen (US $364) for 7 hours. For a full 8 hours of rest you’re looking at 33,000 yen ($400), and keeping your man for the maximum of 12 hours will put out 48,000 yen ($580). All sleeping must be done either at the client’s house or a hotel.

There is also a “Date Plan”, which includes a trip to Tokyo Disney Resort for 70,000 yen ($850, 2 tickets included). There is also the “Premium Date Course”, where the client can specify an activity she would like to do, such as going to the beach or watching the sun set, and Soine-ya Prime will plan and prepare a dream date itinerary for a fee starting at 50,000 yen ($600).

In either case, your rent-a-boyfriend will come and pick you up by car at either your home or a prearranged meeting place. For all plans, it costs an extra 2000 yen ($24) to pick out which “cast member” you want to spend the night with.

ichigobanana 1st-Dec-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
What if the host starts liking you or agrees to kiss you or something? There's no one with them, so if he agrees to tell no one? XD
kodochalover 4th-Dec-2012 02:39 am (UTC)
Thats what i thought too xD
blackdevil2722 1st-Dec-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
If I were filthy rich and have ran out of ways to spend my money, I'll totally give this a go for just one time.

Sorta reminds me of Zettai Kareshi too, this boyfriend-choosing concept where he can even help you to cook and clean hmm
himitsu05 2nd-Dec-2012 04:47 am (UTC)
MTE XD Even a tad better because they're not robots.

A good way to spend money if you live in Japan : an Ikemen with you xD
lip_glossy 1st-Dec-2012 07:41 pm (UTC)

wouldn't it be cheaper and more cost effective to just go out and find yourself a boyfriend? then you can jump on his bone and do whatever you want with him...
aquariia 1st-Dec-2012 08:47 pm (UTC)
Probobly because it's not that easy to find good looking guy who will treat you like princess a whole day without complaining. This work like host club except you can take guy out.
matchafrapucino 1st-Dec-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
Haha, I love how one of the rules forbids doing "Anything that would sexually arouse him."

That's a lot easier for women to do than men, in my experiences.

But if, for some reason, I was in Japan with that much money and free time to spare I would make it my nights goal to make sure the guy had a boner for as much of the 7 hours allotted as possible. Joke's on you, little buddy.
ayumwu 1st-Dec-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
MTE! Especially now that we've been told not to do it now I'd want to do it even more lol
lanysakurai 1st-Dec-2012 08:36 pm (UTC)
I support the idea.

Shut up, take my money and come to bed.

Anything that would sexually arouse him

fuck, as if this is the woman's fault...
luna_rainbow 1st-Dec-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
I remember when the "Sleep with a girl" otaku service came out the reaction is generally one of disgust, but this is somehow more acceptable or palatable?
rainbow_yarn 2nd-Dec-2012 02:33 am (UTC)
I was just annoyed because there wasn't a male equivalent
taciturndream 1st-Dec-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
Kinda risky, in a way, since you can do that stuff in a first date with anyone, and maybe you'll get too atached with the man you buy for a night.
Dunno, in a way I get it, in other way, not at all. It kinda discourages one to go search for a "real" man.
daramji 1st-Dec-2012 10:08 pm (UTC)
dramaticsurgeon 1st-Dec-2012 10:11 pm (UTC) they understand what "empowered" means?

Hmm...on second thought, maybe they do. Offering emotional companionship for sale without the strings of intimacy, which ensures the woman is in control and the man can't say or do anything she doesn't like at risk of being fired. It's not a new idea, but it's an old idea in a new package.

I'm not for or against the idea, but it makes me wonder if power itself is really what the company is selling. Especially when women in Japan are still treated like second-class citizens to a degree. It's rare that a career-oriented woman will make it far in the workforce unless she abandons the idea of a family, since there's virtually no support for single mothers or women with young children. The idea of a "boyfriend" you can hang out with minus the usual ties/obligations no doubt becomes more appealing in this type of atmosphere.

Fascinating to be sure. Healthy? a country with a rising aged population and declining birthrate, not really. But it would be equally interesting to see how many would tread the fine line of rules and who would try to break them.
johnnypenn 1st-Dec-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
This is...actually kinda cool. It's too bad there'd be a huge stigma on a business like this in America.
I know it's weird, but sometimes I don't think American's are good at accepting something like this, to them it'd be a glorified escort business and everyone would be saying that sex does happen. My first thought upon finishing this article is how the business trusts their clients, and even their employee's not to have sex???
itskimbitches 1st-Dec-2012 11:33 pm (UTC)
2 different cultures. studies show that japan isn't interested in sex or intercourse with the opposite sex. sex sells in the US, heck i honestly believe every company has a sexually harassment case pending atm.
palamecian 1st-Dec-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
I'm a little squeamish about this idea of anyone paying someone for their company. Call me strange, but that's a little immoral in my opinion.

Just feels so fake.
nadesico_chan 2nd-Dec-2012 09:04 am (UTC)
I have to agree with you. I don't think I could use this kind of service because I would never forget for a minute that the boy is being paid to be with me. That's not very healthy for your self-esteem I think.

chibi_hime 2nd-Dec-2012 02:23 am (UTC)
Personally, I would have so many uses for these guys (Nothing dirty, get your minds out of the gutter :P)
Need a date for a wedding? Ex-boyfriend dating someone already? Need someone to help you clean? It comes out to around $50 an hour... And I need someone to go with me to my 10 year high school reunion...

But I would be concerned about the guys they hire. Do they do background check? Or do they just hire any guy of the street? Hosts are often recruited that way...
shiny_lights 2nd-Dec-2012 04:07 am (UTC)
If I were rolling in dough I'd love to have a hot guy clean my apartment and cook me dinner, shoot.
bleed_peroxide 2nd-Dec-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
I know, right? If you have the money to hire someone to clean for you, why not hire a hot guy that's willing to get paid for it? /shameless
rebirthreborn 2nd-Dec-2012 08:03 am (UTC)
Bookmarked their OHP in case I decided to go to Japan to try out this service xD
pyroyale 2nd-Dec-2012 08:10 am (UTC)
This is cheaper than I expected it to be.

If only I had a spare 30,000yen lying around... XD
