Okay. Now I finally understand why SoundScan numbers ALWAYS lower than Oricon. I just found out about SoundScan few month ago, so I had no idea why ^^;
sonia_san 7th-Dec-2012 06:27 am (UTC)
Oh please, not ALWAYS. Just for example:

16h Tia Tia ‏@whited_79

Note that Soundscan doesn't cover stores like AKB shops and mu-mo/Avex shops, that's why you're not seeing AKB/Avex artists selling much.

Lately, Soundscan seems to cover more small/suburban/countryside stores compared to Oricon, but Oricon still covers the bigger ones more.

16h Tia Tia ‏@whited_79

As for 8EST, it's 362k+ on Soundscan vs 363k+ on Oricon.

And then Ai Deshita sold 324k on Soundscan vs 320k on Oricon. Aoppana however, sold more on Oricon with 239k vs Soundscan with 234k.

Also very very interesting to note, Soundscan vs Oricon numbers. Singles-wise, ER sold 380k on Soundscan, while 374k on Oricon.

Copied from twitter so the older ones is in the bottom.
kazuninomi 6th-Dec-2012 01:57 pm (UTC)
i think soundscan is better than oricon

it tells the real sales of music without the bonus^^
pipisays 6th-Dec-2012 02:01 pm (UTC)
It's interesting to see the akb numbers without the theatre editions, they're still pretty high but I didn't realise Uza did as low as it did even with 6 versions counted.

Personally I think I prefer soundscan charts over oricons. It's not that I don't think theatre editions or special johnny shop versions shouldn't count as sales but the oricon numbers just always look a bit false instead of a reflection of popularity when you know it's just fans buying multiple editions.

edit: out of curiosity does anyone know the best place to see soundscan's weekly charts? It'd be interesting in the weekly oricon single/album/dvd arama posts to have the soundscan numbers too sometimes.

Here: http://www.phileweb.com/ranking/ Someone provided this link before. I think around the time YamaPi lost his number 1 spot to the Korean artist.
kerplunk 6th-Dec-2012 02:11 pm (UTC)
wow some numbers are lower than oricon which is understandable but then you have force by superfly selling 241k but the oricon numbers say 216k???
asaphira_sachi 6th-Dec-2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
It's possible that Soundscan counted smaller stores that Oricon didn't count.
thewarpedmelody 6th-Dec-2012 02:12 pm (UTC)
Just curious, what does "bonus editions of the CDs are not counted." means?

chizzyrei 6th-Dec-2012 02:16 pm (UTC)
and because of this Hey! Say! Jump gets to be at no. 10. trololol. for a group that has strong single sales, they rarely release lmao weird
J-Storm rarely does give out bonus editions though. Arashi even only has 2 editions most of the time.

nuuuf 6th-Dec-2012 02:20 pm (UTC)
Okay, maybe I'm just a bit stupid, but could anyone help me understand what's a "bonus edition" please ?

Soundscan measures sales of CD/DVDs sold through real + online stores, but doesn't count editions sold through special means ie AKB sell their theater editions through chara-ani.com, and you have to apply for them and win them, JE sometimes make special versions that are only available through their shop, etc.
harisukaori 6th-Dec-2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
Congrats to Arashi and Mr Children! Their numbers are roughly the same as Oricon numbers while AKB48's are 50% lower (or even more) for all their releases.
asaphira_sachi 6th-Dec-2012 10:19 pm (UTC)
Yeah, basically the 1-million records are Oricon exclusive. (although I dunno if any of the Soundscan numbers last year reached a million)
sheix0 6th-Dec-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
AKB's number got lower but still dominating the top 10 for singles~~

Too bad the album sales......:/
Tho that's still pretty good number
I'm happy~
aibada 6th-Dec-2012 03:01 pm (UTC)
yay for l'arc 250k+
hina 6th-Dec-2012 03:28 pm (UTC)
Mr Children are the fucking kings tbh.
arashic5 6th-Dec-2012 03:48 pm (UTC)
Queen namie still the only HBIC relevant

And happy for my babies arashi~ wonder how much the Arafest album sold
love323able 6th-Dec-2012 04:05 pm (UTC)
it's amazing how much akb theater edition helps get them to a million O.O
also didn't know they had that much ver. especially UZA with six

more impressive is Mr Children almost in the top 10 with ONLY ONE edition too! that's really impressive
i always wondered how everyone sell if they only released one edition, instead of multiple editions.

also lol at popcorn being so high up XD
yukkiz 6th-Dec-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
Wow , Misuchiru 's singles and albums sales are huge than Oricon

smilepi 6th-Dec-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
Mr. Children, Arashi, and Kanjani8~ ♥
asweetsymphony 6th-Dec-2012 07:41 pm (UTC)
Soundscan looks like a better reflection of real sales than Oricon. The different versions inflate sales so it skew the end results. Anyways, Can we please start posting soundscan alongside the Oricon sales in arama since its really interesting to see the comparisons.
inachan89 6th-Dec-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
Congrats Arashi^^and wow Mr.Children, they are awesome!!
sergel02 6th-Dec-2012 08:24 pm (UTC)
What exactly counts as a bonus edition? Like i know a lot of singles come in 2-3 types, so are only one of those counted?
asweetsymphony 6th-Dec-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
I think they only counted regular edition?
susan_11 6th-Dec-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
Where is Chankapana and NEWS?
umbrellaphone 6th-Dec-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
I'm guessing for NEWS, since it was sold as a bulk (4CDs / set), Oricon counted that as "4 copies sold" but Soundscan considers 1 set as 1 sale/unit.
