Arama They Didn't

3:01 pm - 12/08/2012

Arashi's member annual income is only 20 million yen!

From movie to television to concerts, this year is a big success for Arashi. Their unprecedented nation wide dome tour mobilized 870,000 people. They ranked in the top 5 of CM income rankings.  From various activities, they contribute to about 20 billion yen to the economy.

Although there are some differences in annual income of each member, Arashi member is earning between 20 to 28 million yen (about US $242,000 to US $339,000) annually.  Or about 2 million yen (US $24,000) monthly.   That is basically it.  Even the lowest earning member of SMAP, Katori Shingo, earns more than the five of them combined.  Many showbiz people think this is not the hopes and dreams of Arashi (Advertising agency official).

For young men between 20 - 30 years of age, this kind of income is like a dream come true.  But Arashi members are top idols of the entertainment world.  From the list of richest celebrities that were published in 2005, the amount of tax paid, and annual income of these people were made public in the hundreds of million yen.  However, this treatment of Arashi is part of an "education" policy of Johnny's.

Not giving financial rewards to top entertainers is a dangerous act that could lead to the collapse of employer-employee relationship.  But Johnny's does not want Arashi to be "derailed" and "dropped" from being top idols.  For example, members of a certain music duo topped 2 million album sales and had received 200 million yen each in bonus money.  But their motivation had disappeared after they got handed the big check.  And now they almost disappear from the music world.  Johnny doesn't want the same thing to happen to Arashi.

Avex is a firm where the professional artists can rise above the office's policy.  Koda Kumi and Ayumi Hamasaki can say NO if the Office propose a plan that they don't like.  But it's absolutely impossible for Johnny's.  In Johnny's, the Office and the talent managers are above the talents.   Their popularity depends on the management system of the talent agency.   The "education" policy of Johnny's and the effort of Arashi members are what drive the steadfast popularity of Arashi.

Meh. We're not them (or their tax man/accountant) so who knows what they really earn. If anything, everyone else is overpaid.
kazuninomi 9th-Dec-2012 08:37 am (UTC)

OMG poor guys!!!

juddyjudd 9th-Dec-2012 11:34 am (UTC)
What I wonder is what happens with the rest of the money... I mean... I don't know... and when they do a dorama or something... their salaries is lower than the other actors? I don't know... and it happens always? or when they get older it changes? something like, "you're young and reckless, it's better if we take care of your money until you are more resposible"? I feel like, maybe... when you're like 25 and you have large amount of money you'll be really irresponsible, but being 30... I don't know ~~
chii1571 9th-Dec-2012 12:10 pm (UTC)
I love Arashi..... but they make enough money to live comfortably and thats all that matters ....
plus i doubt its even true
inachan89 9th-Dec-2012 01:33 pm (UTC)
How can this man not be filthy rich?

Nah i sense bullshit
perseshone 9th-Dec-2012 02:14 pm (UTC)
LOL...sure... i believe that! but to the extent that thats purely a salary from JE if they do pretty much nothing, a 'dormant' idol (kinda like what Akanishi Jin is doing right now...? :P)

of course, aside from that `monthly income', they also have their `earnings for working hard and being active' i.e. royalty, their endorsements their movie/drama money, CM and what not... that could add up to billions of yen!

p/s - that Arashi share house 1st episode guest koichiko referred to where J revealed is current savings to (since he lost at JanKen) is Ueto Aya... not Erika Toda (~_^)v
shiro_renja 9th-Dec-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
I agree with that policy.
I never liked that celebrities or sportsmen where paid billions to dow hat they do, but medical field people or teachers get barely half for saving lives and educating children.
Sure they work hard to entertain us, but it's not worth the billions they get. Also they get more from endorsements and show appearances. Anyways, I personally think the money priority is a bit askew when it comes to jobs.

no wonder they called themself poor.... XD
4moomoo 9th-Dec-2012 03:58 pm (UTC)

I remember after the Tohoku earthquake and the celebrities were donating money, only SMAP were donating with their own money. The rest of the JE guys just showed up in the Marching J beg-a-thon. So there may be some truth in this. That SMAP is the richest group in Johnny's.
asaphira_sachi 9th-Dec-2012 11:19 pm (UTC)
No, Arashi also donated out of their own money. Of the $3.8 million donated from all their charity work, $640,000 were out of their own pockets altogether. Also, don't forget even if someone didn't publicly announce a donation, it doesn't mean they didn't donate.
annhh 9th-Dec-2012 04:38 pm (UTC)
I don't care tbh, they get enough (unless someone takes from between). Because anything above 5000/month is crazy to me.
katzsong 9th-Dec-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
Cyzo, you tried *nods2* /rolls off
vampyrrep 9th-Dec-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
coming from cyzo, i doubt there's any truth to this..
stbluemoon 9th-Dec-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
20 million yen sounds way too little to be true. I'd expect them to be earning around what the younger three in SMAP are getting, or maybe a bit less. Arashi seems to have more group projects, but income from that would be divided by 5. SMAP do more solo stuff, so they could be earning more because of that.

Anyway, I disagree with the concept this article proposes about needing to keep artistes rooted through monetary means. A lot of successful talents in the entertainment industry probably have enough savings to retire comfortably even if they stopped working a long time ago. I believe that most of them aren't doing it for the money.
kerplunk 10th-Dec-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
i have never been a fan of arashi or any JE act, but i have to say this SUCKS!? why do they get paid so little they're monster sellers, just watching the yearly oricon charts im always impressed by how they slay all the charts, singles, albums, dvds etc.

It is a DUMB! reason "lose their motivation" what the fuck??!??! i would lose my motivation if i was working so hard and getting paid so little, i would work harder if i was getting paid more, knowing the pay would increase.

i also think they're referring to chemistry, they topped 2 million twice and then it was a major drop since
kerplunk 10th-Dec-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
then again this article could be BS
xiaomay15 10th-Dec-2012 08:44 am (UTC)
didnt know shingo is the lowest earning member of SMAP.. i thought it was Goro ^^

poor them.. many news ive read and saw says that they are much more popular than SMAP.
kawaii_neko23 11th-Dec-2012 01:29 am (UTC)
Arashi may be more popular as a group, but the members of SMAP do a ton of solo activities which include commercials, dramas etc. Arashi from what I've seen tend to do more group commercials and projects (except for dramas, plays).

But Johnny's does not want
Arashi to be "derailed" and "dropped" from
being top idols. For example, members of a
certain music duo topped 2 million album
sales and had received 200 million yen each
in bonus money. But their motivation had
disappeared after they got handed the big
check. And now they almost disappear from
the music world. Johnny doesn't want the
same thing to happen to Arashi.

try harder j.e. this is nothing but a pathetic excuse for the company to hoard all the money arashi brings in. and fuck that reason ’idols may lose motivation when given bonus for huge sales’. give them good songs, grandiose marketing and production value and your idol will stay relevant. arashi have invested more than half of their life to their careers, not to mention the bond they've created with themselves, the staff and fans, it is very unlikely for them to quit or lose motivation just for receiving an ample portion of what they've worked for.
lovestormbaby 13th-Dec-2012 12:46 pm (UTC)
No wonder Ohno said they don't earn that much money. XD I think it was on one of the Shukudai episodes. Well compared to other celebrities that's not a lot, but I doubt that's the full amount.
riidaaisbest 27th-Dec-2012 12:52 pm (UTC)

I'm a little depressed that what they make in a month, I earn less in a year (after the taxes are taken out).

Still think they should get at least a bit more than that considering their salary in comparison to the overall entertainment/music world.
