No Anime Nominated for Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced on Thursday its list of nominees for the Best Animated Feature category of the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, and the final list contained no anime films. Studio Ghibli and Hiromasa Yonebayashi's The Secret World of Arrietty and Studio Ghibli and Goro Miyazaki's From Up On Poppy Hill had both been a part of the 12-film shortlist for the nomination. The five films that have been nominated are:

  • Brave
  • Frankenweenie
  • Hotel Transylvania
  • Rise of the Guardians
  • Wreck-it Ralph

The HFPA added a Best Animated Feature category starting with the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards in 2007. Since then, no anime film has won or been nominated for the award.

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 13.

chesutoberry 14th-Dec-2012 02:42 am (UTC)
Brave and Wreck it Ralph are friggin awesome movies I have to say
(the rest of the films, I haven't watched it yet but I do want to watch em ;A;)
katzsong 14th-Dec-2012 02:52 am (UTC)
MTE!!! Though I LOVE Wreck It Ralph more ^^
Hotel Transylvania and Rise of the Guardians were quite entertaining but the plot are sub par comparing to the Brave and Wreck It Ralph
brucelynn 14th-Dec-2012 03:56 am (UTC)
Wreck It Ralph ... oh man

I was so giddy watching that
kazeyumi 14th-Dec-2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Brave was pretty meh, I really loved Wreck-it Ralph and Rise of the Guardians! <3
katzsong 14th-Dec-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
Rise of the Guardian ideas were fascinating, but I think the script was a bit lacking. There's just something wrong with the dialogues (not flowing well enough) and character development was...idk, not dramatic or apparent enough? Though the graphics/animation is wonderful. My fave character is the sandman :D
Brave plot might be a bit simpler, but the script was a more well written than RotG. Just my opinion though :p
kazeyumi 14th-Dec-2012 03:53 am (UTC)
True, but brave's story was really predictable. Like I found out what she was supposed to do the moment she cut the cloth in half. :))

Rise of the Guardians is pretty silly when you think about it, i mean teeth and memories what?! :)) But what I like about it is jack frost!!! is it's playfulness. Like I really enjoyed myself! :))

i agree. it was predictable. but what i like about Brave is that it can still touch the heart of the viewers (my sister even cried and i freaking laughed at her XP).

i also think Rise of the Guardians is awesome and so does Wreck-It Ralph! i haven't seen Hotel Transylvania but when i saw the trailer, it looks really funny. :)
kazeyumi 14th-Dec-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
or i'm just biased because RotG has the same director of How to Train your Dragon, and I am in love with that movie skjdgsdg
brucelynn 14th-Dec-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
TBH Dreamworks is like this generation's Don Bluth tbh

they have good ideas and their movies are visually pleasing but there is always something lacking
katzsong 14th-Dec-2012 02:54 am (UTC)
They're waiting for Ghibli's releases next year ^^ Though I have to say that I hope Wreck It Ralph or Brave takes away the globe this year :D
ajisaitea 14th-Dec-2012 02:55 am (UTC)
Kinda bummed that From Up On Poppy Hill didn't get a nod since it's a really good movie. But it would have lost any how since the movies it would have been up against would have killed it.
kazeyumi 14th-Dec-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
idkkkk. from up on poppy hill was wroooong. they just got really really really lucky! O:
ajisaitea 14th-Dec-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
Aww, I really liked From Up on Poppy Hill. It had a nice art flow and the plot was ok. It could have been better but for what it was it was nice.

I'm just pissed that Paranorman wasn't nominated.
urubaby21 20th-Dec-2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
OH my god, exactly what I was thinking.
brucelynn 14th-Dec-2012 03:54 am (UTC)
It's going to be Brave or Wreck It Ralph tbh , I think that top 5 is correct

I can't imagine anything else winning

... Wreck It Ralph was freaking AWWWEEESSOOOMMMMEEEEEE

I hope that Paperman wins for short animation because I had to ask my heart to be still as I watched that :')
chesutoberry 14th-Dec-2012 04:23 am (UTC)
PAPERMAN NEEDS AN AWARD FOR GIVING TOO MANY FEELS

OMFG AGREED!!!!!! GAH my heart melted when it ended <3
water_bottles 14th-Dec-2012 04:51 am (UTC)
imo Rise of the Guardians was shite
harukakamiya 14th-Dec-2012 05:46 am (UTC)
also I have not seen any of these movies so I can't comment on how good the choice is or whatever
aku_rin 14th-Dec-2012 10:32 am (UTC)
Okay, I'll just leave my sad sad Gibli fangirl comment and leave...
I suppose it is to be expected because they are on another level... No cool 3d or anything and and actual plot.
I loved Karigurashi no Arrietty, and I suppose that we have to add the english translation didn't give it many chances? Because in japanese it was just perfect.
mjaytona 14th-Dec-2012 11:57 am (UTC)
i think the list is just right. though i only watched Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians, i still think that all these five films are really good, especially when it comes to graphics and animation.
aaalove 14th-Dec-2012 01:24 pm (UTC)
It's ok, there's always the oscars!
johnnypenn 14th-Dec-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
I hope Brave wins. :)
It probably won't, but I love that movie so much.
It's okay, anime will win eventually.
j_o_n_n_o 14th-Dec-2012 11:24 pm (UTC)

urubaby21 20th-Dec-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
for the longest time I thought the oscars and the golden globes were the same thing....what's the freakin difference??
