Minegishi Minami attends a handshake event & once again apologizes to fans

On February 2nd, AKB48’s Minegishi Minami attended a handshake event held at Makuhari Messe. This was her first appearance in front of fans after shaving her head on January 31st because of a tabloid magazine’s report.

According to fans who attended the event, Minegishi appeared on the platform during afternoon, and said, ”I am extremely sorry for taking thoughtless action as an AKB48 member,” then bowed for about 15 seconds. Regarding her shaved head, she commented, “I did not do it to be forgiven. I wanted to regain everyone’s trust, and to start again from the beginning.

Reportedly, many fans who attended the handshake event, requested to the management, “We have felt Mii-chan’s good faith, so we request to take the YouTube video down.” When AKB group theater general manager Togasaki Tomonobu told Minegishi about the fans’ requests, she responded with, “I’m full of gratitude for the voices from the fans.” Considering the fans’ and Minegishi’s thoughts, Minegishi’s apology video that was posted on AKB48’s official YouTube channel has been taken down on the night of the 2nd.

On AKB48’s official blog, Togasaki commented, “Though Minegishi’s sense of apology will not disappear until she regains the trust from you fans, please continue to support Minegishi Minami, and AKB48.

This is what happens when people who have no idea intermeddle.
I feel sorry for her because of this fact.

People made mountains out of molehills and this is the result.

They learnt nothing from all this, that single sentence proved it.

Why I am not surprised about Yukirin ?

I wonder if they actually took the video down because the fans asked them to do so, or if they took it down because the story's being reported in sources from all over the world and they're getting backlash.
tomoeicemaiden 3rd-Feb-2013 06:40 am (UTC)
I think it's most certainly the latter.
fictionitusxd 3rd-Feb-2013 07:13 am (UTC)
Yeah, it was on ABC News' website yesterday, and Perez Hilton today (But he's not a real news source, so don't attack me for that one XD)
suzieeq_luv 3rd-Feb-2013 07:16 am (UTC)

I feel so much for Miichan. I hate this love ban rule, and don't think it should even exist. If they knew what was best, it'd be abolished by the end of the year. But Miichan is now my second favorite member (After Sayaka). She earned my respect for being a brave person during a time like this. She shouldn't have to go through hell just cause she liked a boy. She'll pick herself up from this.
tpavels 3rd-Feb-2013 11:34 am (UTC)
Do you think its better to tell her that her entertainment career is over? Without AKB she is no one in entertainment business. Being nice girl is not enough. Of course she could graduate and go to college or university and learn or just work at macdonalds as receptionist. But does she want it?

Wow, aren't management such good sports.

/sarcasm

Everyone keeps talking about getting rid of this love ban rule, but even if they did I don't think it would fix anything. You have to deal with the source of the issue and that's the crazy obsessed fans. If AKB's management dropped the love ban and the members started dating all they wanted, AKB would lose popularity so freaking fast. All those crazy wotas that want pure girls to obsess over will move to other idol groups that still have spoken/unspoken love bans. It's sad when you think about it...
convenience93 3rd-Feb-2013 04:27 pm (UTC)
Yesssss this exactly.
It's just how AKB even started. Their orginal fanbase are the otakus of akihabara after all. Not to discriminate all the pioneer fans but inevitably, it's that kinda fanbase that they have depended on their market on for years. Of course they have other fans now but inevitably, we all know where the majority of their sales come from. There's no point in lifting the love ban rule in that case, they might as well disband the entire group then.

The only solution I can think of is lift the love ban rule for the girls who are 20 and above. 20 is their official adult age after all, management should really leave the girls to make their own informed decisions about those matters then. I suppose though their justification of it then would be for standardisation and how the older girls should be an example to the younger ones, so it's difficult to give allowances to any of the girls really. Or so the management would say lol.

The industry itself is a mess. Everything in the entertainment industry is not just the girls in the japanese idol business. To people who are against it, there's nothing to do really other than just not supporting it then. Cause like it or not, in the entertainment biz, circumstances may differ according to industry/country but in the end, there's always something to give up. And if you're not ready to make these compromises or these sacrifices, then just don't get into it is all I can say.

And so people may think that miichan/rest of the 48girls are oppressed and what not. This view may be right, it may be wrong, it may be neither. There's no right answer to it really. But unfortunately, Miichan herself has shown her desire to stay in AKB. So what exactly is everyone trying to save her from if it's something she wants to do? Even if she's been brainwashed, it is still her informed choice, and there's really nothing anyone can do. That's really the end of the story.

I mean of course we could get rid of the idol business altogether so the girls can all have normal lives. But is that what they all really want?

“Though Minegishi’s sense of apology will not disappear until she regains the trust from you fans, please continue to support Minegishi Minami, and AKB48.”

This is when you need to shut up.

Everything had been regulated already but it only escalated because of western media who have no idea about the idol entertainment world and wrote poorly translated articles and people who make mountains out of molehills.

The rule was made for the girls. This way they can fully concentrate on their way to success. Also the whole concept of AKB wouldn't work if all of them were in a relationship.
The girls are fully aware of this rule. They knew about it when they started to audition. They accepted it when they joined.
AKB is not holding them back from having a relationship. They can graduate anytime and then have a relationship. No one is holding them back.

I think if Miichan (Minegishi Minami) wouldn't have shaved off her hair, this wouldn't even have escalated this far. It made people think she was pressured or forced to do it and then they made up various stupid stories.
Media used this opportunity to make Japan look crazy again and people could nag at AKB again.

People really love trying to form everything the way they see it.

The way this turned out is so sad. I only hope people forget about it sometime soon.

The root of this is a social structure that views a woman's virginity as a commodity. It's disgusting and the whole thing makes me sick.

I have to wonder how big will this be if she DIDN'T shave her head
fumine 4th-Feb-2013 10:31 pm (UTC)
I wonder if this wasn't a move on her part to get attention for the "love-ban" issue. >_>
I really don't think the reaction would've been that big if she kept her hair.
harukakamiya 4th-Feb-2013 02:09 am (UTC)
"until she regains the trust from you fans"
