The idea to make a live-action adaptation reportedly came from actor Shun Oguri, who was a big fan of the original manga. After learning of this, Yuichi Fukuda decided to direct the film and collaborated with Oguri on the screenplay.
Originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, the manga revolved around a young man named Kyosuke Shikijo who unleashes his full physical potential as a heroic justice-seeking pervert when he wears a pair of panties over his face as a mask.
The movie, titled HK: Hentai Kamen, was originally teased back in November before screenings of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, but no additional information was revealed at the time.
Ryohei Suzuki stars as Shikijo. Although it will be his first starring role, he was seen as the perfect choice due to his physical stature and extreme dedication. At 186cm, Suzuki is well above the average height in Japan. He also dedicated a full year to intense training on par with a professional athlete, cutting his body fat while putting on 15kg (33lbs) of muscle. As additional preparation, he reportedly spent a good deal of time practicing all of Hentai Kamen's poses from the manga.
