Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Reveals Thoughts On Minami Minegishi Scandal

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was a guest on the French television program "Le Petit Journal" while visiting the country for her world tour "100%KPP WORLD TOUR 2013". During the show, the singer discussed the Minami Minegishi scandal that captured international interest.

"In the Japanese idol world, they are very strict about relationships. It's like in return for male fans' support, idols keep out of relationships and love, devoting themselves to their jobs as idols," Kyary stated when asked about the scandal.

The singer explained that she could love freely and openly since she wasn't an idol, distinguishing herself as a true artist. She criticized idols as people who act a certain way to get men to notice them.

"In my opinion, and idol's job is to suck up to men and do what they can to get their attention. What I do though is something guys will never love. What I'm doing is more like an artist than an idol," she said.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's world tour brought her to Europe during the beginning of February. The singer will be returning to Japan for more performances before traveling internationally once again.

I love Kyary and I don't disagree with her, but for some reason I find it a little funny coming from her.

Lol I don't think she quite meant it that way... Kyary likes idols herself.
ethereal_limbo 16th-Feb-2013 12:47 am (UTC)
i don't think she was trying to diss anyone. it just came out awkwardly i guess? or it's the translation.

anyways, it's kind of self-explanatory that if your core demo is male you cater to males, isn't it. every product caters specifically to their demo(s).

Yeah I'm guessing it's the translation bc this is nagl

The translation makes it sound more insulting than she intended. She did mention that she's friends with Miichan and other AKB members, so it's not like she hates them all.

Huge respect to her for saying what most people already think, anyway.
Yama Take 16th-Feb-2013 01:22 am (UTC)
Her comments suggest that the vast majority of AKB followers are male. Is that true? I'm under the impression (perhaps mistakenly) that they have a very strong female following?

I thought the no boyfriend thing was more about projecting a sense of innocence and purity to fans male or female?

Probably
overall she was talking about idols tho. like how girls are targetting the guys while the guys target girls
Something about a dream partner...

lol i'm gonna sound like such a kyary apologist but idt she was criticizing idols/trying to be a special snowflake at all?? the second part sounds kind of iffy, but i think she meant to explain the difference between female idols and herself, rather than criticize idols tbh. like idols' cutesy image is supposed to cater to guys which is why it's more "sexy innocent school girl"-ish whereas her cutesy image is for herself and not to attract male fans, plus it's more "little girl cute" rather than "sexy cute" so it isn't something typically liked by guys (even though there are obvs guys that like it but idk if she's aware she has a lot of male fans, as well...). hence what she's doing is more like what regular artists do, and not what idols do.

or maybe i'm just talking out of my ass oop~~ idk tho, kyary doesn't really strike me as the kind of person that shits on others but then again, it's not like i know her personally
45s 16th-Feb-2013 02:23 am (UTC)
The part where she distances herself from idols and calls herself a real artist over idols doing more or less the same thing she does is why ppl are groaning lol

She's right about everything else but could have left out that bit.
myharu 16th-Feb-2013 02:11 am (UTC)
If someone with more accolades or better music said what she said I would have just shrugged it off and/or agreed with them, but since it's kyary....

Nope

drigby 16th-Feb-2013 03:06 am (UTC)
I thought she was an idol that catered to those that liked or fantasized about living dolls/anime characters. She definitely isn't a real singer. And if what she does is art, I don't know what kind it is. Most idols are more legit performers than she is.

She's not trying to insult anyone (she's Sugaya Risako's biggest fan) but calling herself a true artist...lol. Kyary, you silly girl.
ararat010 16th-Feb-2013 04:20 am (UTC)
It's hilarious how she considers herself an artist when she's considerably less involved (not to mention less skilled) in "artistic" activities (singing, dancing, acting, musical performances, etc...) than your average AKB member. And I'm not even talking about top Senbatsu here.
I can take this argument one step further and point out how they don't even use her actual voice to make songs, which means that the only merit she can objectively claim for herself is just her forced gimmicky image (and it's not even something she came up with on her own). How does that make her different from a bottom-of-the-barrel underground idol, now?

Someone must explain to her that idols and artists are not mutually exclusive and what sets the two categories apart isn't just that one is allowed to get dicks in her fanny at all times. And it's not like being given the dick heightens your artistic skills in some way, either. For all I know, her creative control over what she's made to do or say in public amounts to zilch.

the idol thing also depends on who uses the word. I mean, there are agencies that call their acts idols and don't put a dating ban on them if they're old enough to date (since there are people under 16 in those agencies too). It's also a thing of what idol fans thing it can be considered idol or not. There are different views on the matter as well, so even if it got lost in translation, Kyary made an statement that cannot be applied to all the female idols out there in Japan.

I wanna ask you something. My friend told me once that the renai kinshi jorei wasn't there when AKB was founded but that later all the members agreed to take on that bow because the newest generacions were signing under it. Is that correct? You seem to know a lot, so I guess you'll know this for sure.
namiia 16th-Feb-2013 04:27 am (UTC)
Where's the lie though?
roomgirl 16th-Feb-2013 04:32 am (UTC)
No lie, just silly that she's dependent on a male producer to create everything she does so that she can then call herself an "artist."
