Susan Boyle in Japan for New Year’s Eve music gala

NARITA – Susan Boyle, the Scottish spinster whose talent show performance catapulted her to global stardom, arrived in Japan Tuesday to perform on a New Year's Eve music gala watched by millions.

Boyle waved cheerfully to fans as she was escorted through Narita airport east of Tokyo, declining a request by television networks to give an impromptu song on the spot.


She is due to appear on Japan's best-known music extravaganza, public broadcaster NHK's year-end "Kohaku Uta Gassen," which literally means "Red and White Song Battle" and has been running since 1951.

The plain, single, unemployed 48-year-old's soaring voice was discovered in April when she stunned judges on the "Britain's Got Talent" television show with her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables".

Although she ended runner-up in the competition, footage of her singing became a YouTube hit, with more than 100 million viewings.

The frumpy church volunteer's first album, "I Dreamed a Dream," was the best-selling debut in British chart history and also topped the US charts.

These articles about Susan Boyle always bother me...It has nothing to do with her, she's very talented and I'm glad for her. But it seems to me like the media is just merely tolerating her. Even this article: "Scottish spinster...plain, single, unemployed...frumpy church volunteer..." Seems to indicate that because she isn't some drop-dead gorgeous super-model knockoff she isn't really worth anyone's time. It's almost like they're saying 'We can't understand why she's famous, it's not like she's pretty or anything'

The whole industry is like that, it drives me insane. There are people out there with amazing talent who'd give anything to be able to perform for huge audiences, but they get cast aside for crap like Beckii Cruel just because they aren't pretty enough.

She may have dissenters, but overall I think it's tremendous progress. Her debut is selling a ton, and she's very popular all over the place, because she has the voice of an angel (pardon the hyperbole). I'm not even personally a fan, I didn't buy her debut or anything, but I recognize talent when I see it and I appreciate it thoroughly. The fact that the rest of the world seems to be doing this is delightful to me. :)

Her album is NOT selling due to her voice. It's selling due to her underdog, Cinderella story, the way the Youtube video was edited, etc. She's as manufactered as ANY popstar.

TBH, the reason is kinda the opposite. The only reason she's gone this far is BECAUSE she's a "Scottish spinster...plain, single, unemployed...frumpy church volunteer...". Of course she has a good voice, but there were other people with voices just as good as hers. There is only one reason why she's become such a success - because people first saw her, they judged her on her appearance and dismissed her immediately. Then she opened her mouth and she was not what people expected and people felt guilty. The media love the big moral in that story.

It's not that they just tolerate her, they love it - the gap between her persona and the fact that "OMG she is actually good at something." That's her selling point. Instead of 'We can't understand why she's famous, it's not like she's pretty or anything' - it's more like, 'Yeah, you judged her, didn't you - shame on you - just because she's not young and beautiful doesn't mean she can't sing.' It's almost as bad though - like the poster below said, it's like they're treating her like a novelty.

It makes the backlash worse in a way, because that guilt can only get you so far. It's kind of like "Well fuck I felt bad for judging her that way, so I watched the youtube video and she can go away now."

She gets a lot of hate because the media likes to make a star rise, but only to a certain extent-- because tearing it down is part of the fun. THAT to me is what is shitty about the industry.

the media MADE her. they advertised her Youtube video incessantly.

and the industry LOVES her cause she records a cheap album full of covers and it's selling billions, basically giving them something to be happy about.

i don't see your point. she's famous not due to her talent (which isn't THAT amazing. she's talented? sure. does she have a good voice? yes. is it a unique, one of a kind voice? not BY FAR. does she write her own material? no. does she have ANY input in her career? no. she is NOT exceptionally talented), she's famous due to her cinderella story. people aren't buying her album cause she's talented, they're buying due to her sob story (i mean, do you REALLY think people are buying an album full of covers by an old Scottish lady who has a voice not unlike anyone on broadway or the west-end due to her TALENT? please). why the media should pretend otherwise?

I'm not saying she's talented. I just hate that the industry is sooo focused on looks that people with actual talent are overlooked regularly.

I think it's unfortunate that she's famous because she is the opposite of what the industry considers beautiful. It's horribly unfair to the people who work themselves to the bone trying to make it.

This reminds me of Clay Aiken from American Idol. He has an angelic voice and can sing really great too but part of his initial popularity was because of his geeky, ugly duckling look. He was very big after his season but looks where he is now. It's true that there are several things going on with his personal life that turned some of his fans away but the media has also teared him down and trashed him so much that I can't see how he could ever rebuild his career. The media got tired of "geeky, ugly guy who can sing" angle so they went after him for "the geeky, squeaky-clean singer is not so good afterall" angle instead.

I fully expect the media to do the same to Susan Boyle in a very near future. :(

I think that's why most of this thread is tired of her, because she's not somehow capable of bagging a dude from TXVQOMGWTFBBQ and KATTUN and ARASHI or wtfe.

I love her, idgaf. I love that she's so talented and her voice isn't all affected and stupid sounding and love her even more for the fact she isn't gorgeous and she's swimming in piles of legitimately earned money.

I feel bad for her sometimes, not just because of all the hate she gets because of her being over-exposed.

But it's almost like she's a joke sometimes. Like they play up the fact that she's not hot to the point that she's a novelty. It's sad...she's just a woman that seems rather sweet that all of a sudden got a ton of fame, but part of the reason she got that fame is because people are so ~*shocked*~ she's older, not the standard vision of "attractive", and unmarried.

The fact they always reference her being unmarried pisses me off the most tbh.

I dont know Susan Boyle until someone here in Arama post her for being part of Kohaku so i gave her my damn time researching who is she...in the end i find myself crying in her rendition of I dreamed a dream.//its her audition piece in Britain got talent...i love how she look dump and the audience laughing at her until she shut them with her amazing talent....-known as Never been kissed, unmarried, slow learner etc..>i've become to like her now.>first impression is a wrong impression..im so excited to see her in kohaku.

I just love how in the previous article they said Susan Boyle is the biggest celebrity they've ever had on Kouhaku before.....umm.....really?!?!?!

I love Susan Boyle and all, but you have some of the biggest musical talents in Japan and your headliner is a youtube celebrity.....?

Also, I watched the special about her arriving last night on keyhole and they played her version of "I Dreamed a Dream" on repeat in the background for the entire 30 minute show. I hope she sings something else for Kouhaku.

She got more famous because of YouTube yes, but calling her a YouTube celebrity makes it sound like she was posting her own videos along the likes of Beckii Cruel. She has the best selling album in the WORLD right now, so it makes perfect sense that she's performing at Japan's biggest event.
