Tokyo Metro manner posters confuse and delight commuters

Tokyo Metro manner posters confuse and delight commuters

Sometimes the hustle and bustle of big city life in Tokyo makes you forget your manners. Women who don’t have enough time in the morning apply makeup on bumpy train rides, people doze off on the shoulder of their neighboring passenger, and the occasional man will clip his finger nails. With most people commuting by train and working very long hours, sometimes there’s no time to do things at home. And sometimes, you’re just so tired and stressed that you don’t care that you are behaving badly.

As a result, back in 2008, the Tokyo Metro system launched a three-year-long campaign aimed at reminding subway passengers to mind their manners while riding the trains. It featured the slogan “Please do it at home” or “Please do it again” alongside an illustration of the featured manner or rule.

All posters are written in Japanese and English, some featuring hilariously outrageous and sometimes confusing activities that make you wonder, “Do people actually do that on a train?!”

Below are some posters.

rizuka 29th-Mar-2013 03:59 pm (UTC)
omg where are these posted?? *__* I only saw the one about covering your mouth when coughing/sneezing
draxander 29th-Mar-2013 04:00 pm (UTC)
Some of these posters are really cute!

I'm rather doubtful about the umbrella-swinging one though. Where did that come from?
agirlsgarden 29th-Mar-2013 04:41 pm (UTC)
And what is he swinging at? Snow? At first I thought he was taking swipes at golf balls.
dori_liv 29th-Mar-2013 04:18 pm (UTC)
Doing your make-up / touch-ups on the train/bus seems so convenient. Its a shame its considered impolite.
kachie_kurayami 29th-Mar-2013 04:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah if there is room and you are not bothering anyone, I don't think it's bad behavior at all.
nalty7 29th-Mar-2013 04:19 pm (UTC)
The guy who turns off his phone is fabulous.
draxander 29th-Mar-2013 04:47 pm (UTC)
Such high standards for switching off a phone.

You mean I have to sparkle and look fabulous?
pyroyale 29th-Mar-2013 04:32 pm (UTC)
I only ever see the ones with with the little black... bear (Is it a bear? What is it supposed to be anyway?)

Like this one

I think they're cute XD
akillarian 29th-Mar-2013 11:59 pm (UTC)
At second glance, it could be a toddler in one of those animal full suit. But I think it would look cruel to put a baby in the picture, so they put a bear instead.

Lol the characters in these are A+ (the thumbs-up in the last one, I can't ;~;). <3 Ngl though, the headphones thing is one of my pet peeves. :(
chinpirako 29th-Mar-2013 04:46 pm (UTC)
I wish they'd hang some of these in the train stations here too...
johnnypenn 29th-Mar-2013 05:10 pm (UTC)
wow. Some of these are confusing. I like the people who look a bit like the the Samurai Foo characters. :)
helenmaldon 29th-Mar-2013 05:18 pm (UTC)
This made me laugh soooooo much, thank you for posting xD
And I completely agree, I commute on the bus and it makes me so mad when I see people using three seats or not moving to let people out the doors etc. Now I can just think, "Please do it at home" xD
joyeuxnoel 29th-Mar-2013 06:23 pm (UTC)
So... I went to the source. I've gotta be living in the wrong part of America because I've never seen an in car Halloween party. o_o
kazeyumi 29th-Mar-2013 06:23 pm (UTC)
haaahahah these are so cute! i was expecting a poster about reading porn in public/the train, but i guess not! :))
fantaesticbaby 29th-Mar-2013 06:26 pm (UTC)
I saw some brilliant signs similar to these on the Tokyo metro.
One of this guy with giant legs that spread across like 3 seats, which was meant to tell people not to take up more than one seat. But it looked so weird...
nitzi 29th-Mar-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
I love those! Every time I visit my bf, there is a new one, changing every season. Like the macarons at Starbucks.
asth77 29th-Mar-2013 06:53 pm (UTC)
lmao @ the macarons at Starbucks a+.
uledy 29th-Mar-2013 07:05 pm (UTC)
These are golden.

I used to haaaaaate those kids that would sit on floor in front of the door. Why can't you just sit on a seat! /crotchety old lady
saiyanwizard 29th-Mar-2013 07:12 pm (UTC)
Regarding the 15th or so poster (where the lady is trying to get her bag down from the top stowage area), I swear the person that helps her get her bag is Matsuko Delux!
mikanseijin 30th-Mar-2013 03:11 am (UTC)
omphie 29th-Mar-2013 07:42 pm (UTC)
In the original source, there's one called "Please do it in America" and features some people in Halloween costumes.

That one is hilarious. This whole campaign is full of win.
doinkies 31st-Mar-2013 07:13 pm (UTC)
The "Please do it in America" one wasn't an official poster, it was a parody one made by a guy on Twitter...still funny though..
blazingeternity 29th-Mar-2013 07:54 pm (UTC)
Awesome! I love how funny some of them are... they'd kinda make cool t-shirt prints! :D

Recently saw a new one on Tokyo Metro that reminds people to not cough into other people's direction. I cannot find a picture of it, but it looks so hilarious! There's a lady and a kid sitting on the train, being showered with the germs of a guy standing next to them and coughing into their direction (rather looks like he's throwing up). The lady's super outraged while the kid tries to hide unterneath a book xD
dori_liv 29th-Mar-2013 09:49 pm (UTC)
T-shirts is a win idea!
hpswf1 29th-Mar-2013 08:01 pm (UTC)
I want that man in geta to be around when I have a heavy luggage in Japan! >
inachan89 29th-Mar-2013 08:06 pm (UTC)
BWAHAHAHAHAH!!!I love this!!I want to see an athlete actually doing that on the train lol
And the guy switching off the phone is seriously a winner XDD
stef_ipa 29th-Mar-2013 08:55 pm (UTC)
lol the pictures are great
edneichon 29th-Mar-2013 09:15 pm (UTC)
Nice campaign, some of them are hilarious, some are too much, but most of them nailed grabbing everybody's attention
