Arama They Didn't

The Future of Arama They Didn't

the last flying ayu

Hi!

In the past year we’re sure you've noticed a lack in Arama's quality and overall activity. We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest. We started Arama They Didn't! nearly five years ago, and to this day it still surprises us what it turned into.

Through years of copyright issues on streaming and download sites, it became increasingly difficult to find Japanese media online which is the only way most of us is able to access it. The J-pop community as a whole was segmented and shrunk even more with the rise of K-Pop’s constant releases and breaking news. At Arama, we tried to create a place that encompassed it all and bring back that sense of unity we once had. We've shared nearly 20,000 articles, received almost a million comments and built a community that brought 19,000 people together with the single interest of Japanese Pop Culture.

LiveJournal has given us the opportunity to achieve what we originally set out to do. In 2012 we joined LJ Media thinking we would be further legitimized as a news outlet and hub for fandom, but after that seemingly went nowhere and swept under the rug. As we grew, our needs also grew but we weren’t sure how to execute them. Finally we decided it was time for us to go to take the next step and plan a revival for Arama.

I'll check it out for a while and see where things go but I'm not entirely sold much will change.
norringtons 29th-Jun-2014 09:59 pm (UTC)
nothing will change, tbh.
izumi_ixa 30th-Jun-2014 01:17 pm (UTC)
Sad to know that you'll leave Lj, but happy to know that I can be follow you in other webs.
I'll follow the new "Arama Japan", for sure ^^
katzsong 30th-Jun-2014 05:12 pm (UTC)
Just saying, I like Arama because of the user generated content give me the sense of ownership of a community. I was given the chance to be active and creative, instead of just passively reading the news (like any other news outlet). Leaving tips will not be the same.
But well apparently you guys are the real owners of this "community". You have made decision. So...good luck.
ryl92 30th-Jun-2014 05:58 pm (UTC)
I've been active in LJ since 2008 and I really love this community since I found it. All the entries are priceless and gave me more knowledge about Japan.
I know you guys might lost interest already but we're not. It's not subjective but I found J-fans are really loyal and most of them are buying the CDs, Albums, DVDs, and others and it's proved with their (artists) high selling each year compared to, for example, K-pop.
I think it is better to change mod OR let other member make a new Arama community.
Sorry to say but you guys are look so stubborn and persistent in my opinion.
It's really a one side decision to close this community and move to the new site (again, I don't know why you guys made a new site while LJ still active and you guys don't even passionate enough in this J-related)
Soon or later you guys will probably abandon the new site anyway.. So sorry but it just teared my heart about the announcement.

Well, good luck anw!

This is kinda sad. I liked the user-generated content, it makes the site a lot more interactive and engaging than just any other news site with comments enabled. I understand that this community was set up by the mods and they have every right to shut it down if they want to, but when a community gets this big it belongs to the members as much as the owners, it's only polite to consult everyone before making such decisions. Perhaps this comm could be kept as a companion site to aramajapan, or maybe renamed to something else if that's a problem. It seems like such a pity to dismantle a gathering place for over 19k members over the decision of a few people.
falling_cookie 30th-Jun-2014 11:49 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure if I believe that you guys will actually keep up this new site since you said yourself that you lost interest. I really do hope that it does well and becomes a new Japanese ent site, but it's going to be bad losing this community.
asth77 1st-Jul-2014 05:25 am (UTC)
Lol I'm glad now that I know Arama's mods. I came into this post vaguely curious about that new site and I end up totally losing interest because of their pretentious asses. I think I'll just have to find another place for my jpop needs.
Bye Arama :( (I mean, the original one...) it was fun while it lasted.
botanbutton 1st-Jul-2014 06:04 am (UTC)
I love how change is not accepted in this community. lol
katzsong 1st-Jul-2014 03:45 pm (UTC)
Well, not really changing. Just closing. But hey, that's life
nuuuf 1st-Jul-2014 11:09 am (UTC)
So, I checked the new website. I'll give it its chance for a while and will probably check it every now and then but is this just another Tokyohive? It actually looks fairly nice for the moment but I'm afraid adding 'money' in the equation will make it lose what I believe was arama's spirit. I hope this time you'll manage to stay interested enough in this to achieve your goals and make it a real plus to the J-ent. community. Because, yes, we're a community so I hope the commenting system will be enough to keep the comunity feeling.

I have a question though: I know it hasn't happened in forever for some reasons but what about Free For All? And the Arama awards? Those were really liked and it'd be a shame to lose that. Oh, and by the way, do you intend to post some articles about politics and society once in a while? I remember those posts to be among the most interesting ones, and it's nice to have something 'serious' popping up once in a while.

I know, rite? I follow some formal Japanese news outlet on my twitter and sometime would love to share the news here, to discuss with Arama's members. But now...
And yeah, I've checked the new site as well. The look is a bit fancier, like Tokyohive. The feel is just like another Tokyohive. So...Idk. Maybe it's for the best, since I have to concentrate on something else anyway. Maybe I just have to close the arama chapter in my life.

kotomichi 1st-Jul-2014 10:52 pm (UTC)
tbh this really should've been posted way sooner. so many people thought this place was dead and it's partly bc you guys didn't keep us updated. but at least you admitted your mistake, which not everyone would've done, so ty for that.

idk if i'll check out the new site regularly but i'll give it a chance at least. anyway, good luck

I'm also going to miss the old LJ days, especially the free talk on Fridays... that was so much fun! I'll be following you on your new website.
love_keiko 3rd-Jul-2014 02:59 pm (UTC)
late to the post, i guess. regarding the demise---i agree on some points and disagree on others. speaking as a jpop AND kpop fan the only real difference is ACCESSIBILITY. the kpop market is so small they NEED that reach---jpop is MASSIVE, that reach is barely needed.

i became REALLY frustrated with arama during the whole kpop vs. jpop posts that started to pop up mostly because the community was dead otherwise. omona posts about music or PVs get, on average, 100+ notes but here if namie drops something we're lucky if we break the double digits. it started to feel as tho ppl came to complain instead of support. in addition, i agree with a bunch of ppl who say that mods didn't do enough to keep the community going. there was SO MUCH that could've been done and had the mods made the crisis apparent to us earlier i'm sure everyone would've been able to provide ideas on how to keep this community going.

that aside---we dont NEED another tokyohive. considering the kind of news to comes out of japan it's already proven that that simply doesn't work. if u're in it for the drama---u will be left starving.

i AM glad that there is a tumblr, tho. ppl SERIOUSLY underestimate the power of that platform AND it's REALLY in need of a main j-entertainment news source. there is a MASSIVE audience and at least there ppl can directly or indirectly contribute to the community via reblogs. with it's current main platform there's no real chance at that...

but at the end of the day i'm just happy as hell that at least it isn't GONE.
ostsiberia 4th-Jul-2014 07:59 am (UTC)
The new website is nice but could the mods please transfer their duties other lj users? There are a bunch from another post who said they wouldn't mind being mods (I wouldn't even mind). I think there are still some, like me, who would like to keep this lj community going. If the mods here want to focus on the new website, I don't see it being a problem for them to leave and let others continue on.

Or if a few others are interested, I can help with building a new lj arama.
norringtons 5th-Jul-2014 03:02 am (UTC)
I've said the same thing. Let other's that actually have the interest you "lost" take over the comm.

I'd totally be on board for helping with Arama 2.0
hipployta 5th-Jul-2014 02:38 am (UTC)
I mostly lurk here but I'm still going to comment on this.

While I congratulate you on your new site I have to say for those of us that enjoy LJ communities a notice that this was happening would have been nice. I also think you could have opened the moderation up to others who were interested in stepping up since you lost interest.

Considering how Arama has been delayed and died off the last few months due to your disinterest it's hard to believe the same won't happen again at the new site but I wish you luck.
norringtons 5th-Jul-2014 03:01 am (UTC)
Mods, the classy thing to do would be giving other users that are active here the reins. This comm doesn't have to die. You said you lost interest, so give the comm over to others that will breathe life into it. You can still go play on your pretty new site.

I love the new website! good job :)
asth77 8th-Jul-2014 08:30 am (UTC)
Is that me or some messages disappeared? Lol. Anyway, anyone willing to make a new comm?
I can't be a main admin or whatever because I know I might be really busy the next couple of years. But I'm def willing to help and post articles etc. I know quite a few ppl wanted to be mods. So if anyone wants to create a new comm on LJ, PM me etc?

I wanted to do some stuff for Ex- Arama since I'll be in Tokyo for 1 month, like take pictures or do reports on some pop culture/fashion/Touristic places & if I get to see K8 in concert again, count on me for the exclusive reports lol so… that'd be interesting for y'all I guess? And funny to start a comm.

- that new blue message scared me lol-
ameimi 8th-Jul-2014 08:48 am (UTC)
I don't know how much help I can be but I'd be willing to help as much as I can~ And the exclusive reports definitely sound like fun. ^_^

I can't PM you back because of your privacy settings :).

yesss finally!!
pistol_eyes 20th-Jul-2014 10:44 pm (UTC)
Oh...So I guess this place is officially dead.
norringtons 20th-Jul-2014 11:03 pm (UTC)
Arama is, but a couple of friends and I are working on a new Jnews comm.
cuizy 21st-Jul-2014 05:40 pm (UTC)
Hmmmmm so do the creators really have exclusive ownership of this site? (Esp since most of the work was just in the layout, the articles are just submitted by users) I didn't know comms could just close when members were offering to help or take mod duties. And following the ontd format, even if we make a new comm it would be named something similar right?
norringtons 27th-Jul-2014 08:09 pm (UTC)
I didn't know comms could just close when members were offering to help or take mod duties.

Because it's about the money, and they don't want competition.

A couple friends and I have created a new Jnews community.
izyclover 24th-Jul-2014 08:45 am (UTC)
I've been following this blog since...eons...
and yes the surge of KPOP is too suffocating
I want my jpop news and that's where arama came in
norringtons 22nd-Aug-2014 09:25 pm (UTC)
Some friends and I made a new Japanese new community if you're interested. alwaysjapan
asth77 30th-Jul-2014 11:15 pm (UTC)
The new LJ comm about Japanese entertainment is called AlwaysJapan, and it's user-based.
You can follow us on twitter to stay informed about the official opening (that will happen in August…)!

https://twitter.com/AlwaysJapan_LJ
:) It'll be a comm about J-entertainment but also social/political/cultural news, user-based, a little bit different from the -no they didn't- serie but we kept the freedom of speech/community ~feeling etc…. We have also 2 translators.
