Coke in rugby haka advertisement blunder

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A TV commercial featuring actors dressed as All Blacks performing the haka alongside Japanese dancing girls is raising hackles within Maoridom and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

The Japanese commercial for Coke Zero, features popstar Namie Amuro alongside what advertising agency copy describes as "a troupe of studs from Kiwiland in the traditional Maori haka dance".

The men are actors wearing jerseys similar to All Black kit, but without the silver fern, and their movements appear to be from the Ka Mate haka.

Ngati Toa are considered the custodians of Ka Mate. Spokesman Te Ariki Wi Neera said an advertising agency had approached the iwi through the New Zealand embassy in Tokyo.

"We told them that if they wanted to use Ka Mate they needed to talk to us first. They declined to engage when they saw we were serious about protecting it."

He had not seen the ad, but was unimpressed after hearing it described: "We would have been happy to work with them, but it sounds like crap."

Despite a relationship with Coca-Cola, the New Zealand Rugby Union last night was unaware of the advertisement and expressed concern it might be inappropriately using the All Black brand.

Paul Dalton, commercial manager for the union said: "We place a high value on our intellectual property and will be looking at this more closely next week."

Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell said Maori would be concerned about their culture being used in such a way: "Obviously we're pretty protective about the mana."

Coca-Cola Amatil New Zealand was unaware of the ad, but was last night making inquiries of its Hong Kong office.

here is the commercial for those who haven't seen

Kind of amusing how they're promoting cola as healthy....even zero sugar cola is still bad for you in comparison to other drinks (like water.)
[info]domestic_hooker 14th-Feb-2010 08:14 am (UTC)
mte.
[info]yuaelt 15th-Feb-2010 06:36 am (UTC)
exactly XD
you'd have to be like, 5 years old tops to believe it.
zero sugar simply means aspartame. sure it has less calories but it doeasn't make cola any healthier. ;P

however, commercials like this one are probably meant to decrease the bad image of Coca Cola in long term. it's still ridiculous, but what's actually more ridiculous than this campaign itself, is that it may work out. the world is full of people who think health problems come from sweetness only. bad, bad LOL.

I ain't no expert (never watched Rugby, NRL or AFL) but that definately looks 'similar' to the haka to me XD
[info]ficchica 14th-Feb-2010 09:07 am (UTC)
It really doesn't help that the New Zealand All Blacks are the only team that does a Haka...
[info]nymphetamosa 14th-Feb-2010 09:09 am (UTC)
Really? I thought all their football teams did it. My mistake :)
[info]ficchica 14th-Feb-2010 09:18 am (UTC)
I meant out of the rugby teams, it's something that is internationally distinctive to new zealand. I don't think I've ever seen the football team or leagues, so I'm not sure what they get up to.
[info]nymphetamosa 14th-Feb-2010 09:20 am (UTC)
I checked on wikipedia and the All Blacks are primarily the performers, but occasionally the other footy teams and the basketball team do it. Doesn't really matter though, the add is pretty much a rip-off of it >.>

I'm from Fiji and I can tell you that other island countries (with rugby teams or without) have something similar to the Haka. So does Fiji. It's just that the Haka is the most famous (and the most fierce). It's a war cry, basically, get us if you can.
[info]glider 14th-Feb-2010 08:09 am (UTC)
goddamn I love Coke Zero and that commercial is like fierce in a weird way. This controversy's pretty lame though.
[info]xanderave 14th-Feb-2010 08:24 am (UTC)
You can barely see the guys since it is more focused on Amuro but heck! That cm is fierce.
[info]dasenai 14th-Feb-2010 08:25 am (UTC)
Yeah...didn't really read this but I love the CM.
[info]morpheuslove 14th-Feb-2010 09:39 am (UTC)
ok i lived in new zealand for 2 years, and this wouldnt cause the huckus that this article is claiming. sure, there are radical maori who are fiercely proud of preserving their culture, but most maori people are really lax about stuff like this. the only opposition to this people would have is that the haka is not meant to be performed by women.
[info]seth0et0holth 14th-Feb-2010 09:43 am (UTC)
In which case one can't win: it's either culturefail or sexismfail. LOL
[info]morpheuslove 15th-Feb-2010 09:59 am (UTC)
i guess. but still, this isnt the 'big cultural blunder' this article makes out. it hasnt even made the news in new zealand, whereas beckii cruel was on new zealand news just a few days ago.

Same here.

I suspect publicity stunt.
[info]noonew 14th-Feb-2010 09:46 am (UTC)
I still think this remains as the BEST EVER HAKA CM.

[info]tipsytoe 14th-Feb-2010 10:18 am (UTC)
JUSTIN MARSHALL. god this takes me back, i used to follow all blacks in junior college, practically butchered my finals because of the world cup.
[info]kazutakia 14th-Feb-2010 06:08 pm (UTC)
I cried for days when they lost against France in 2006. D:
[info]tipsytoe 14th-Feb-2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
YES. I was totally pissed off with England in 2003. Rage! But I don't mind Springboks, so I was happier when they won 2007 Cup. My best friend supports the Wallabies, so we usually end up supporting these teams whenever they play. Except when they're up against one another. Ah, good times. I haven't been caught up with rugby for a while, and forgot that RWC will be on next year!
[info]maramala THIS14th-Feb-2010 01:59 pm (UTC)
This is how it's done.
[info]shavashava 14th-Feb-2010 04:23 pm (UTC)
:o
I got goosebumps!
[info]kazutakia 14th-Feb-2010 06:07 pm (UTC)
THIS is how it's motherfucking done! This is why I've loved the All Blacks for years and years. Gives you goosebumps and an adrenaline rush!
[info]aabass89 14th-Feb-2010 06:38 pm (UTC)
I freaking LOVE All Blacks!!!!!!!! And I'm not even a New Zealander...
[info]thehibiscus 14th-Feb-2010 08:21 pm (UTC)
Omg, I love this. Fiji and All Black 7s used to have the most awesome games.
[info]lilcus23 14th-Feb-2010 10:51 am (UTC)
pretty bland controversy but Amuro Namie did look hot however
[info]madzterill 14th-Feb-2010 11:06 am (UTC)
whatever, but she's totally HOT!
[info]volume1995 14th-Feb-2010 12:16 pm (UTC)
new song omfggggg
[info]shavashava 14th-Feb-2010 04:24 pm (UTC)
hahaha no way that was wayyyyy worse. Maybe if Namie Amuro performed the haka it would be as bad.
[info]lloneke 14th-Feb-2010 07:37 pm (UTC)
Um she looks fucking hot in this got damn
[info]crsg 14th-Feb-2010 08:53 pm (UTC)
I'm a New Zealander - this isn't particularly offensive to me in any way. In fact, aside from the whole Namie Amuro thing, I don't see a whole lot of difference between this ad and any other Coke (or indeed many other big commerical product) ad. It's just sexed-up advertising, and what else is new? And as far as the Haka itself goes, I'm pretty sure that a) only a small number of extremists would be offended, and b) people need to stop being so self-absorbed with their culture.
[info]strawberryparty 14th-Feb-2010 09:40 pm (UTC)
it's kind of weird that the ad agency went to the trouble of contacting the embassy, finding out how protective the haka thing is, didn't work with maori/kiwi reps, and then did this anyways.

it's like, "oh, you want us to respect your culture? FU. namie, get your ass over here and dance."
[info]lane_myer 15th-Feb-2010 04:24 am (UTC)
MTE.
[info]mayayim012 15th-Feb-2010 05:47 am (UTC)
Namie looking hot in the video!~
[info]czarny 15th-Feb-2010 03:35 pm (UTC)
OMG DRAMA~~~
[info]nice_vibe 16th-Feb-2010 12:11 am (UTC)
Using an aspect of a foreign culture for something commercial is almost always offensive, imo
[info]sasayaita 16th-Feb-2010 08:35 am (UTC)
Maori Party MPs... as usual, stiring up trouble that aren't worth anything.
[info]inudela 17th-Feb-2010 05:42 pm (UTC)
Namie Amuro is fierce.

ngl, don't care about the rest.
