All-girl NMB48 pop group debuts in Osaka, hopes to match success of Tokyo's AKB48

OSAKA -- New all-girl group NMB48 has made its stage debut at a theater by the same name in this city's entertainment district.

Some 240 people flocked to the NMB48 Theater in Osaka's Namba district on the New Year's Day as the16-member pop group -- ranging in age between 12 and 16 -- made its live stage debut. The group hopes to follow in the successful footsteps of their sister group AKB48, based in Tokyo's Akihabara district.

Most of the members are from Osaka Prefecture, including Haruna Kinoshita, a sixth grade elementary school student, who joked during the event, "I still carry a (primary) school backpack," in her Osaka dialect.

Group leader Sayaka Yamamoto, 17, said, "We would like to give a 120 percent effort to our everyday performances."

The live performances will, in principle, take place every day. An official souvenir shop has also opened near the theater.

New year rice cakes kill several in Japan

At least six people in Japan have died after choking on glutinous rice cakes traditionally eaten during new year celebrations.

The victims, aged between 70 and 95, suffocated after getting pieces of mochi stuck in their throats at home over the weekend, according to Japanese media. Another 18 people remain in hospital, five in a serious condition.

The chewy rice cakes, traditionally served in soup during the first few days of the year, kill several people annually.

The fire department issues warnings that the elderly and small children should only eat mochi that have been cut into bite-sized pieces. But every year a number of people ignore the advice, then fail to masticate their mochi into submission before swallowing.

Tips for dislodging trapped mochi include a sharp slap on the back, the Heimlich manoeuvre and – a less conventional method that makes an appearance in the 1985 Juzo Itami film Tampopo – sucking it out with a vacuum cleaner hose.

One company even sells an attachable nozzle that, with a little luck, will suck out the offending lump of rice cake without damaging the victim's throat.

The offending food is made by placing steamed white rice in a mortar and pounding it with a large mallet until it becomes soft and chewy.

The rhythmical, labour-intensive task is often turned into a neighbourhood event, where people take turns to pound and turn the mixture before it dividing it into cakes and distributing.

Though eaten throughout the year, mochi are to a Japanese new year what mince pies are to Christmas in the UK, and authorities report a jump in the number of choking incidents in January.

With the number of over-65s predicted to rise dramatically in the coming decades, there are fears that the number of victims of suffocation by rice cake will rise.

Ebizo dropped by sponsor after pub brawl

TOKYO —

Disgraced kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizo, who was involved in a pub brawl on Nov 25, has been dropped by sponsor Pip in a forthcoming ad campaign for the company’s Elekiban Z product.

Elekiban Z are small magnets attached to the skin in the belief that they aid blood circulation. The advertising campaign that was due to be broadcast this month has been canceled in light of the publicity over the brawl and the subsequent cancellation of Ebizo’s kabuki performances.

Meanwhile, coverage of the “Ebizo incident” has been on the decline since the kabuki star reached an out-of-court settlement with his alleged assailant Rion Ito, 27, and a former bike gang leader, 29. The media are also said to be spending less time camped outside his house, though a few were there over the year-end period.

Ebizo hasn’t emerged and is thought to be spending time quietly at home with his wife, newscaster and TV personality Mao Kobayashi.

SHINee’s Japanese website crashes moments after opening

Photobucket

SHINee has shown their explosive popularity in Japan once more through the opening of their official Japanese website.

On January 4th, Sanspo reported, “Moments after the opening of SHINee’s official site, the site crashed due to the mass influx of traffic.”

SHINee previously performed for a 24,000 member audience during their first Japanese concert last month, and had announced that they’d be opening their official website.

The site had opened at 8PM, and within the hour, over 20,000 fans rushed to take a look, crashing the server and member registration system for two days.

Sanspo continued, “There wasn’t any other notification regarding the site’s official opening, so this is quite the exceptional feat for the group. After the server was recovered and an official announcement was made, over 100,000 page views have been recorded within a week. SHINee has been earning much popularity lately, as exemplified by the 100,000 members that joined the month-long ticket event for their Yoyogi Live concert.”

SHINee will be making their official Japanese debut this March.
