When Martin Smith checked into a small "ryokan" in the hot-spring resort of Shima, Gunma Prefecture, on a rainy September night, staff at the traditional inn saw a glimmer of hope that overseas guests could be lured back after the March triple disasters of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident.
Smith, a 32-year-old cofounder of a software company in San Diego, was the first foreign guest that Kashiwaya Ryokan had received since launching an English-language word-of-mouth campaign using Facebook and other websites earlier in the month.
Smith's trip fulfilled a decade-long wish to visit Japan, despite many tourists' concerns over the Fukushima nuclear crisis.
"I'm not worried at all and it's ridiculous," Smith said. "I had time, so I really had to do it."

MINAMISANRIKU, Miyagi Pref. — A house more than 300 years old on the Miyagi Prefecture coast that barely withstood the March earthquake and tsunami will be relocated all the way to Kagawa Prefecture, where it will be restored in a museum.
Silk producer Shigeyuki Endo, the 61-year-old owner of the thatched house in Minamisanriku, one of the communities hardest hit by the disaster, had lived in the home since the day he was born.
Endo decided not to demolish the house, now leaning heavily to one side, because it "withstood the tsunami despite its old age."
He hopes the home will be seen by many people after its restoration.

AKB48’s Oshima Yuko has officially become one of many beta testers for the upcoming Square Enix game, “Final Fantasy XIII-2“. She is also the new face of the FFXIII-2 commercial, which will start airing on October 15th (JST).
Oshima entered the Square Enix building in a gray pants-suit and was handed an official name card and a “FF13-2 Development ROM“.
The AKB48 idol professed that she’s a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, and was honored to be one of 13 official beta-testers, who go by the name ‘Judge XIII‘. She also wrote in a manifest that they, ‘Judge XIII’, will write their honest thoughts and reviews of the game as they go through it.
A campaign site will be established for ‘Judge XIII’, and if enough fans “like” the website, Oshima will cosplay as a character and hold an event with the company.
The game will be available on December 15th in Japan, January 31st, 2012 in North America, and February 3, 2012 in Europe.source

Good luck for their performances in USA ^^
Imagine this: You’re flying into Canada, a bastion of peace and tolerance, and you’re traveling light—a carry-on bag, a few magazines, a gift for your Canadian hosts; and your iPad, iPhone and laptop.
Upon arrival, Canadian border officials suddenly seize and search the last of these.
What they discover is not an explosive device or a cache of al-Qaida contacts, but rather items they deem incendiary nonetheless—a stash of digital manga images, some featuring doujinshi (fan-made) illustrations, others that might be labeled lolicon (lolita complex) manga, showing eroticized renderings of what are clearly fictional, possibly underage if they were real, characters.
Whatever the designation, they are all digital images saved on your personal laptop, and they are all imaginary.
An American computer programmer in his mid-20s went through this humiliation last year while visiting a friend in Canada. He has since been charged with possession and importation of child pornography and he faces a minimum of one year in prison if convicted—not to mention a ruined reputation for a lifetime.
I have written before about the growing intolerance of manga and anime on both sides of the Pacific. Last year, 39 year-old American Christopher Handley was convicted of possessing child pornography in Iowa after U.S. postal officials opened parcels of lolicon manga he had ordered from Japan.
Shortly thereafter, Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara rammed through the now notorious bill 156, legislating the morality of socially disruptive manga imagery while ignoring the propagation of live-action child pornography.( Collapse )

This is definitely sudden and unexpected. SDN48, while not as popular as its sister groups, has been doing reasonably well. As such, many were caught off-guard. I do not know of any rumours or other reasons for this mass graduation to happen, so for now it would be best to take their word for it and that the members have decided they wanted to do something else.
I am still in shock. It was not too long ago that I watched SDN48 live in Singapore and there were no hints of what was to come. Had the girls decided then and put on a fantastic show anyway, or had they not decided anything? This is a huge decision and I would think it had been decided for weeks at least. Yet, I still remember Ito Mana prompting the audience to visit the theater in Akihabara in future. It certainly didn't seem like they were thinking of graduating. I'm also angered because I believe this is in part thanks to creator Akimoto Yasushi neglecting the group in general and the girls may have felt there wasn't any way to develop further.
further tweets from Melos no Michi says that they knew about the graduation from a month ago. this is a sad day indeed. And a terrible April Fool's Joke, AkiP. And I'm still waiting for CD and DVD versions of their first stage. >|
Kodansha USA Publishing, the American arm of the Japanese publisher Kodansha, announced on Friday that the English version of Sailor Moon manga volume 1 will get a second print run after the first print run of 50,000 copies “sold out in just four weeks.”
Kodansha USA did not specify if the 50,000 copies of Naoko Takeuchi’s magical girl manga sold out at the distributor level or at the retailer level. With the second print run, the volume will have 100,000 copies in print.
Kodansha noted that the first volume of Sailor Moon has stayed on top of The New York Times manga bestseller list for a third week in a row since it debuted on September 13. Takeuchi’s related Codename: Sailor V volume 1 had two weeks at #2 after debuting on September 13.
On October 13th, Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi attended the pre-screening event for his upcoming movie “Kaibutsu-kun“. As reported previously, the movie will take place in India, and it follows the story of Kaibutsu-kun and his entourage’s adventures in the “Curry Kingdom.”
The event drew 1,700 fans, and Ohno rode on a big elephant to play up the theme of an exotic adventure. During the MC session, Ohno revealed that he bought ornaments in India as a souvenir for the other Arashi members, but unfortunately, all the members told him they didn’t want it.
Aside from Ohno, Yashima Norito, Ueshima Ryuhei, Matsuoka Masahiro, Kawashima Umika, Hamada Tatsuomi, and Inamori Izumi showed up in their costumes from the movie, and the original author, Fujiko Fujio A, appeared at the pre screening as well. Korean MMA Fighter Choi Hong Man, who appears in the movie as “Franken”, did not attend the pre-screening due to his recent scandal.
“Kaibutsu-kun” is scheduled to be released on November 26th in both 2D and 3D.
Showblitz, the blog of the entertainment trade magazine Variety, reported on Friday that Warner Bros. will decide on whether to green-light the live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's science-fiction manga Akira next week. According to Showblitz, the producers gave a presentation on Wednesday, and sources are "confdent that [Warner Bros.] will be happy" with the revised budget.
Variety had reported in July that Warner hired director Jaume Collett-Serra (Unknown, Orphan, House of Wax) to direct the film, which was "being reenvisioned as a $90 million" blockbuster project. In May, previous director Albert Hughes left the project due to "creative differences" on the film.
The development team with producer Andrew Lazar (Jonah Hex, Space Cowboys, Get Smart) hired a writer named Albert Torres last year, after screenwriters Gary Whitta, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby were previously attached to the project. When the project was originally announced in 2008, it was intended to be the directorial debut for Ireland's Ruairi Robinson. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Aviator) is producing through his Appian Way production company. (source)
In Japan, there isn’t a day you don’t see child actress Ashida Mana (7) on TV. Whether it’s a CM, a movie, a drama, a music or a variety show, this young girl seems to be everywhere.
Many people love her and can’t get enough of her charming personality, which becomes evident when looking at the numbers. Tabloid ‘Shukan Bunshun‘ wanted to get some insider information about her from within the industry and found an official from a TV network, who explained, “Every show that Ashida appears on experiences an increase in ratings. She is one of the biggest viewer magnets at the moment and can pull up viewer ratings by 3~4% all by herself. Everyone knows that and everyone wants to have her on their shows.”
However, there are also a lot of people who are becoming more and more worried about Ashida’s busy schedule.
Actress Adachi Yumi (30) is one of them and commented, “Is it really okay for Mana-chan to be that busy?” Adachi started out as a child actress 21 years ago herself and had her big breakthrough in 1994. She was still in junior high school around that time and already had trouble living a life between work and school, but her schedule was nothing compared to Ashida’s, and that girl just entered primary school!
Ashida’s duet with Suzuki Fuku (7) is still charting and already sold over 650,000 copies. This month she is even having her own solo debut. Further, she appeared in three different movies this year, has CM contracts with 10 major companies, appeared in NHK’s taiga drama “Gou” for two different roles, starred in her first drama and drama special, and is going to appear alongside drama legend Kimura Takuya in the upcoming drama “Nankyoku Tairiku“. Ashida even became a regular on the show “Meringue no Kimochi” making her the youngest MC to host a weekly TV show in history. However, no matter how many filming sessions for dramas or variety shows are on her schedule, she still has to go to school.
