Nintendo Responds to PETA About Super Mario 3D Land

Says game make no real-world statement after animal rights group's "Mario Kills Tanooki" campaign

After the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched a "Mario Kills Tanooki" campaign on Monday, Super Mario 3D Land developer Nintendo responded by saying that the game's Tanooki transformation makes no statement about the real world.

Nintendo is releasing the Super Mario 3D Land platform game this month with the return of the Tanooki transformation first seen in Super Mario Bros. 3. The protagonist Mario powers up with several animal-based transformations in Super Mario 3D Land, and the Tanooki transformation draws inspiration from tanuki or Japanese racoon dogs. Tanuki have supernatural powers in Japanese mythology (and in anime such as Isao Takahata and Ghibli's Pom Poko film).

PETA's website asserts that "in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur." PETA even launched a Flash-based Super Tanooki 2D Skin game in which a skinless Tanooki chases Mario to "reclaim his fur."

Nintendo spokesperson told the Eurogamer site that Mario's transformations "have included a frog, a penguin, a balloon and even a metallic version of himself. These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play." The spokesperson added, "The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves."

hey peta. i have a message for you:

Weekly Oricon Chart: Albums/Singles/Music-DVDs

Popular idol group, SKE48 topped the singles chart this week with "Oki Doki." It is the group's best debut week sales to date. It is also their third consecutive number one single since "Banzai Venus." The lyricist of the title track is Akimoto Yasushi, who also wrote the lyrics to the second place single, "Refrain" by Sandaime J Soul Brothers. This is the first that two singles from the same lyricist occupy the top 2 spot in 24 years.

In the albums chart, popular Johnnys' duo, KinKi Kids achieved the number one spot with their new album in two years, "K album." This is their 8th consecutive no.1 album since "G album -24/7-" (released in October 2003), out of a total 14 albums.

Posting the top 30 albums/singles and the top 10 music-DVDs. The second column in the top 10 refers to sales in 2011. New release in bold.

Ghibli's Miyazaki, Suzuki Wish Pixar a Happy 25th!

The Nico Nico News site posted the illustrations that director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) and Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki drew to congratulate the American computer animation studio Pixar on its 25th anniversary. Miyazaki writes tongue-in-cheek in his drawing that Pixar is a youngster at 25, while Suzuki urges Pixar co-founder John Lasseter to "take it easy!"

The illustrations are part of Pixar Pia, a retrospective compilation book that the Pia publishing company is shipping on Friday. The 96-page tribute book includes a section with messages and illustrations from Japanese animators such as Miyazaki, Production I.G's Kenji Kamiyama (Eden of the East, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), Satelight's Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Escaflowne), Gainax's Hiroyuki Yamaga (Evangelion, Nadia), and many others.

Pixar Pia recounts Pixar's history, highlights the company's short and long films, and takes a look at the animation studio's practices and accomplishments. After the passing of Pixar and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs last month, the editors added a memorial section to the book.

Some more info on Andrew... I mean Akira

Despite reports that Ezra Miller was on short list of actors testing to appear in the remake of 1990 Japanese anime film 'Akira,' the young actor revealed exclusively to Moviefone that he won't be appearing in the movie.
"It's not true," he said in a phone interview. "That, I can assure you, will not be a reality."

Miller has nothing but respect for the franchise, but insists that at the moment he's not interested in pursuing that kind of role.
"It's a beautiful Japanese epic and I think it'll be a very entertaining, fun film, but no, it's not my next move," he said.
His upcoming films include 'Another Happy Day,' Toronto International Film Festival hit 'We Need to Talk About Kevin,' and the 2012 release 'Perks of Being a Wallflower.'

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that 'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart has been offered the female lead role in 'Akira.' Other stars rumored to be part of the reboot include Keira Knightley, Gary Oldman, Garrett Hedlund and Helena Bonham Carter.
