Manga Translator Acquitted of Child Pornography Charges In Swedish Supreme Court Ruling

Swedish news outlet The Local reports that their Supreme Court has overturned the conviction of manga translator Simon Lundström on child pornography charges relating to manga files on his computer. The court’s decision reflects the viewpoint of free speech advocates, including the CBLDF, that sexually explicit manga images are protected artistic expression and not child pornography. The court stated, “The criminalization of possession of the drawings would otherwise exceed what is necessary with regard to the purpose which has led to the restriction on freedom of expression and freedom of information.”

The Local reports:
Lundström, described by Swedish media as a top manga expert, was found guilty by two lower courts of having 39 drawings portraying figures in sexual poses stored on the hard drive of his computer.
In his initial trial, he explained that he had retrieved the pictures in order to stay up to date with the latest developments in the Japanese comic genre.
A district court fined him 25,000 kronor ($3,500) but an appeals court lowered the sum to 5,600 kronor.

CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein welcomed the ruling, stating, “This is an important victory for free expression and for manga. The Swedish Supreme Court has correctly drawn the boundary that governments have a compelling interest in prosecuting criminal behavior, not ideas or expression. Child pornography is an abhorrent crime because real people are harmed, and the creation, distribution and possession of that content are criminal behaviors that contribute to creating victims. Today’s ruling that drawings of an imaginative nature where no victim is created cannot be child pornography is clear-minded and will hopefully provide guidance here in the United States and around the world when similar cases arise in the future. We congratulate Mr. Lundström and his attorney Leif Silbersky for their courageous efforts in reaching this important decision.”

Being in the same line of "business", this makes me extremely happy. Also, I found out about this from Neil Gaiman's tweet. ; u ; <3

AKB48 Producer Akimoto Yasushi's Response To Sashihara Rino's Transfer

Akimoto Yasushi released a response on his Google+ account.
It’s about the transfer of Rino Sashihara to HKT48

I heard in the weekly magazine article about the talk of the person herself (Sashihara) ,
she said, ”Everything is not true but, some people who believes about this article misunderstood it and I have no choice”.

This talk came out way back 3 or 4 years ago when Sashihara was still a trainee, that as AKB48 members are reflecting in their lack of self-awareness.
Sashihara had a 1 yellow card that is likely to be considered as a stern warning .

Rino Sashihara’s ”high spirit” of ”The feeling of I won’t give up whatever will happen” is a role model to AKB’s member .
I hope that this strength will convey to the juniors,
I decided to transfer her to the HKT48 which was formed just recently.
There are some people who said it is ”demotion” to her, but that is rude to the members of HKT48, staff and their fans.
We have a long meeting and we came out to a conclusion, and I think it is a good motivation to the young members of HKT48 and a new challenge for Rino Sashihara .

To those fans who made Sashihara to be 4th place,
How far you will say that you are ”incompetent” ?
With this kind of important time.
But, It’s Sashihara .
May be she will become a leader in HKT48 strongest group someday .
Or may be she will mingle in the strongest group of HKT48 .

Please give Rino Sashihara a warm care as the AKB’s least ”member who doesn’t response from an expectation“

- Akimoto Yasushi

- Translated by AKB48 staff on Akimoto Yasushi's Google+

Consequently, Sashihara will have her last performance with Team A of AKB48 on June 20.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu apologizes to Kanjani8 fans

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu recently apologized to Kanjani8 fans on Twitter.

On the June 15th episode of ‘MUSIC STATION’, Kyary was about to perform and was sitting in the front row. However, her huge ribbon blocked the members of Kanjani8 who were sitting behind her.

After the broadcast, a fan of Kanjani8 tweeted Kyary, “Isn’t your ribbon too big? I couldn’t see Kanjani8’s faces. It’s okay to stand out, but please think about the trouble you may be causing other people.” To which Kyary responded, “I’m sorry about that ( ; ; )”.

On that day Kyary wore her Rubik’s Cube outfit, since she knew her fans would enjoy it. Afterwards she tweeted, “From now on, whenever I am on TV programs with other artists performing, this 19-year old will pay attention to what she wears. However, when I think about it the cute outfits are usually Huge! Bulky! Heavy! Let’s come up with a smaller design next time.

Net users commented:

As long as you’ll still be yourself!

Why are you apologizing? You didn’t do anything wrong!

Johnny’s fans can be like this and it’s no good. Your ribbon was super cute

Please wear what you want. That’s Kyary-chan
