Japan's pursuit of cute spawns $30 bil industry

cute

Police forces use them; shops can’t do without them; power companies have them—and sack them when they become unpopular. No marketing or public information campaign is complete without them. Cute, cuddly—or startling—characters are everywhere in Japan.

While marketers the world over have long understood the value of an oversized cartoon animal who can persuade children to part with their pocket money, those in Japan know it is also an effective way to reach their parents.

And despite the tepid economy, there is money to be made.

The licenced character industry, including copyrights and merchandising, is worth a whopping $30 billion a year—more than Japanese people spend on books annually.

KAT-TUN to provide the theme song for Kanjani8's Yasuda Drama

KAT-TUN, who released their newest single “TO THE LIMIT” last month to favorable reviews, will provide the theme song for MBS/TBS’s drama “Dragon Seinendan”, which will start this month.

“Dragon Seinendan” stars Yasuda Shota, who is a member of Kanjani 8, and is Yasuda’s first solo serial drama. The drama tells the story of the opening of a door that takes one away from daily life into a fantasy. Ueda Makoto, the chairman of Europe Kikaku troupe, wrote the script and directed the drama together with Miki Takahiro, who is known for the hit movies “Solanin” and “Bokura ga Ita”; and Matsui Daigo, who became a hot topic from the movie version of “Afro Tanaka”. Aside from Yasuda, the cast includes Renbutsu Misako, Endo Kaname, Honda Chikara, Araki Yuko, and Yusuke Santamaria.

KAT-TUN’s new song “Fumetsu no Scrum” will be used as the theme song for the drama, but an announcement regarding the release for the song has not been made at this moment. The drama will begin airing on July 14th at 12:55 AM on TBS and on July 19th at 12:55 AM on MBS, so those interested in their new song should check out the drama!

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu takes a picture with Momoiro Clover Z in Paris

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu recently updated her Twitter with a picture of herself and idol group Momoiro Clover Z, cutely dressed up in Sailor Moon cosplay at the French convention “Japan Expo” in Paris.

“Even in France I run into Momoclo! It’s too bad the leader (Momota Kanako) isn’t here!” she tweeted, along with her group shot. “Thanks for working so hard during your live performance!” The Harajuku sensation has been occasionally tweeting in French since arriving in France, and has been busy sightseeing in Paris before her live performance at J.E. Live House.

What do you think of Momoclo’s Sailor Moon cosplays?
