Erika Sawajiri, star of Helter Skelter, wins third Japanese Academy Award

"Helter Skelter" has snagged an award of excellence at the 36th annual Japan Academy Awards (Best Actress in a Leading Role). The film's star, Erika Sawajiri, who won Newcomer of the Year and Topical Actress at the 29th ceremony seven years ago, has struck gold again this year.

The film, released in July 2012, is the motion picture adaptation of Kyoko Okazaki's classic cult themed manga of the same name. The movie became a hot topic after it was revealed it would be the return of Sawajiri to the silver screen after five years, and took in 2.1 billion yen (23,064,300 USD) at the box office.

Mika Ninagawa was awarded the Kaneto Shindo Silver Prize, and was selected by 30,000 gyaru as the best film of 2012, earling a GRP award. It also ranked at the #1 searched film on Yahoo! Japan's 2012 rankings, and it's clearly the top film of the fiscal year.

I'm glad she's not partnered with Sato Takeru. But LOL at Acchan and alcoholic beverage together.

The movie is based on Inui Rokuro’s award winning novel “Kanzen naru Kubinagaryu no Hi“, and it’s a love story between ‘Koichi’ (Sato) and ‘Atsumi’ (Ayase) who are childhood friends, and eventually become lovers. Atsumi is under comatose state after a suicide attempt, and Koichi tries to wake her up by using “sensing” which is a new technique in neurosurgery to communicate and enter the mind of a person who is in a coma. While peering through Atsumi’s subconscious, she asks Koichi to look for a picture that she drew a long time ago.

“Space Pirate Captain Harlock” movie slated for fall release

On Thursday, the upcoming CG-animated Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie was officially announced as a fall 2013 release. Toei Animation originally announced the project a few years back and screened an early trailer at the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair, but very little information has been released since then.

The movie, tentatively titled Captain Harlock in Japan, will be the most expensive product from Toei Animation to date, with production costs totaling over $30 million USD. It will be directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Harutoshi Fukui (Aegis) is handling the screenplay.

Instead of simply being a remake of past works, it’s being described as a reboot, akin to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Fukui’s screenplay will emphasize the darker side of the Harlock character and the film’s theme will reflect various aspects of modern society. Meanwhile, Aramaki is reportedly taking a “Hollywood style” approach to production with an emphasis on “speedy action”.

In 1978, the “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” animated television series captured the imaginations of a whole generation of young boys as it told the story of a rebellious pirate captain who led a 40-man crew on the starship Arcadia to oppose enemies of Earth when the government was unable to. Additionally, the series has aired throughout Europe for decades and is especially beloved in France. For that reason, Toei is banking on the film doing well overseas as well as in Japan.

Seriously, it hurt so much to see Miichan in this condition. I think this is the first time she cut her hair. Well, congrats to Shunkan Bunshun for destroying her and Masuda Yuka's career in just a few months. And to think that Miichan is 1st generation member! T-T But at least she didn't graduate.... Miichan's fans, show your love to her in the next election!

Edit: Okay, I think this is too sweet to be ignored. 1st generation member (minus Kojima Haruna). Even Acchan's there! Apparently, Takamina also cut her hair (It is far more shorter than when she get haircut because her hair burned). Not sure about Acchan though, because I think she wear extension before, so I don't know her original hair length From Itano Tomomi's twitter

Japanese Husbands Screaming In Public About How Much They Love Their Wives

On January 30th, Tokyo men overcome cultural norms to scream declarations of love to their significant others.

In Japanese culture, modesty and reticence are traditionally valued over outspokenness and expressions of love and appreciation are uncommon, even among married couples.

For the past 5 years, Tokyo's "Devoted Husbands Organization" has encouraged men to publically declare their feelings for their significant others on "Love Your Wife Day." The annual celebration falls on January 31st.

At the event, husbands stood onstage in a public park to express gratitude for everything from children to homemade lunches.

"I'm sorry that I've gained weight over the last seven years," a suit-clad man yelled. "But that's because the meals you cook are so delicious."

Another businessman took the stage to proclaim: "I can fly higher because you're with me. Please stand by me forever."

"I'll hug you very tight tonight," one husband promised. "Thank you for your love."

"He's very fabulous and manly today," said Yuko Todo, 33, after her husband Takeshi's performance. "It just reminded me how macho he used to be - I'd forgotten that in the eight years we've been married. My heart pounded."
