Kora Kengo & Yoshitaka Yuriko attend the film premiere for ‘Yokomichi Yonosuke’

On February 7th, Kora Kengo, Yoshitaka Yuriko, and other cast members of upcoming movie “Yokomichi Yonosuke” attended the film premiere.

“Yokomichi Yonosuke” is based on Yoshida Shuichi’s award-winning youth novel serialized on Mainichi Shimbun during 2008 ~ 2009. Setting in the late 1980s, the protagonist Yokomichi Yonosuke (Kora), who was born in a port town in Nagasaki, goes up to Tokyo to enter a college. Yonosuke’s agreeable and good-natured personality always bring people around him. The story depicts a daily life of Yonosuke, his girlfriend Yosano Shoko (Yoshitaka), and those around him.

At the premiere, Kora said, “As I see the February 23rd (release day) is approaching, I can feel ‘Yokomichi Yonosuke’ is gradually leaving our hands. I can’t help but feel lonesome.” Yoshitaka agreed with him saying, “It is very lonesome, but it’s a complex feeling as I also feel happy that I was able to be a part of a work that could make me feel this way. I feel bad for other works I have been in, but this was almost the first time for me to like a movie this much. I really love this work.”

Kora also talked about filming, “It was such a happy time. I feel that there are many reflection points, and I wish I could have noticed it back then. I was able to act in the way I wanted at the time, and I was happy to act with many people for something that could have been done only with them.” Yoshitaka also commented, “Even though Kora-san was the only one I was deeply involved in the movie with, I love other cast members too. It made me realize this work left a strong impression inside of me.”

Other cast members who attended this day include Ikematsu Sosuke, Ito Ayumi, Ayano Go, and the director Okita Shuichi. There were also samba dancers at the red carpet event.

“Yokomichi Yonosuke” will open in theaters starting on the 23rd.

K-pop group Boyfriend to star in their first Japanese movie

The K-pop group Boyfriend is set to star in an upcoming Japanese movie called GOGO♂ Ikemen 5, which is based on a popular romantic comedy novel.

Boyfriend was formed in 2011 and consists of six members: Donghyun, Jeongmin, Youngmin, Minwoo, Kwangmin, and Hyunseong. Their single “Be My Shine” debuted in Japan on December 8 and immediately reached #4 on the Oricon chart. They also received a sudden spike in attention in Japan when their song “Hitomi no Melody” was chosen as the ending theme of the Detective Conan anime last month.

The original novel has been viewed over 600,000 times on the popular user-generated content site Everystar, where it was voted the top romantic novel by users of the site. Due to its success online, a paperback edition was also released last year. It’s especially popular with female readers ages 10-20.

The film is a slapstick school comedy and revolves around five good looking young men who are popular, excel at sports, and get the best grades. They’re collectively referred to as “Ikemen 5” and are considered the idols of their school. However, when they all fall in love with the same girl, the group and their school are thrown into turmoil.

“GOGO♂ Ikemen 5” is directed by Sakurako Fukuyama (Be Crazy About Me!) and will be released this summer.

One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Toriko collaborate in Fuji TV’s ultimate anime mashup

Japan’s Fuji TV revealed earlier this week that its Toriko anime series will collaborate for a one-hour special with the mega-popular series One Piece and Dragon Ball Z. The program is in celebration of the third year of Toriko‘s running, and is scheduled to premier on April 7th at 9:00 AM, lengthily titled Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Chou Collab Special.

This isn’t the first mashup between One Piece and Toriko, as the two animes appeared together in a special in April of last year. The special was a hit among fans, so this year the creators decided to take things up another notch and add the well-known Dragon Ball Z. This will be the first time Luffy, Goku, and Toriko, the heroes of One Piece, DBZ, and Toriko, respectively, appear on one program together. Fans of One Piece and DBZ will also be able to enjoy their favorite series in one place later this year when Shonen Jump, the publisher of the two series’ manga, opens its own theme park in Tokyo.

The scenario of the collaboration will have the characters from each series participating in a race called Tenkaichi Kuoukai, an event where gourmet hunters compete to win a luxury ingredient. The Straw Hat Pirates from One Piece, along with Goku and the other DBZ members, enter alongside Toriko and his fellows to win, resulting in a grand battle between the three. Special collaborations like these rarely make it out of Japan officially, however fans will surely have it on the internet shortly after its premier. Looks like overseas anime fans better start brushing on their “nihongo” (Japanese)!
