Japan’s Lonely “Chocolate Refugees” Ask for a Sweet Donation

Valentine’s Day. It may well be little more than an excuse for chocolate manufacturers to line their pockets, but its popularity in Japan seemingly knows no bounds. For those men in relationships, the day is usually one filled with gifts of fondue toilets and creepy girlfriend-shaped chocolates, but for the singletons out there it’s just another day to feel unappreciated.

But not these young men! Rather than spend February 14 without a little somethin’ sweet, they donned sunglasses and face masks and descended on Tokyo’s Machida station asking for chocolate donations from passers-by. And, would you believe it, they were actually kind of a hit with the ladies.

“I just saw these guys at Machida station!” said one Twitter user, “They really want chocolate! Haha”

Holding hand-written signs reading such things as “Please give us chocolate!”small groups of men could be seen in and around the station asking for sweet donations. And judging by the amount in their hands, they were doing pretty well, too!

Hollywood to make live-action movie adaptation of Robotech

Inspired by the success of the live-action Transformers franchise, Warner Brothers is now reportedly looking to adapt Robotech, the beloved US animated series that was based on three classic Japanese robot anime series that aired in the 80s.

Warner Brothers has been interested in the project for some time now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but no specific details have been released. Slashfilm.com said that the emergence of a trailer for a fan-made movie a few weeks ago probably spurred on the studio to finally get serious in looking for a director. The name that has cropped up is commercial director Nic Mathieu, who is reportedly in negotiations with WB to helm the film. Mathieu does not have a feature film under his belt but his commercials have a slick, metallic, sci-fi feel that the WB might be looking for in this adaptation.

Robotech was a hugely successful mash-up of three Japanese sci-fi robot anime series that aired in Japan in the 1980s, “Super Dimension Fortress Macross,” “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” and “Genesis Climber Mospeada”. Produced by Harmony Gold USA in association with Tatsunoko Production Co., Ltd, it had a lot of feature films and adaptations, as well as toys, collectibles and video games. Warner Brothers obviously sees the “major franchise potential” of Robotech. Now if only they can get it all together while nostalgia for this sort of adaptations is still high.

Kabuki’s future in question after passing of stars Danjuro and Kanzaburo

Ichikawa Danjuro XII, 66 years old, passed away this month and begins a difficult time for the art of kabuki in Japan, being its
most revered personality. Together with Nakamura Kanzaburo XVIII, who died in December at age 57, the pair shepherded kabuki theater through a period of modern revival that saw the form on television and in foreign theatres.

Danjuro was as famous to the Japanese as Laurence Olivier was to the British. Kanzaburo, who preformed on stage at the age of three, died of complications from cancer while Danjuro died from pneumonia. Kanzaburo’s sons, Kankuro VI and Shichinosuke II, inherit the responsibility for carrying the art form through. Their lineage stretches back 18 generations. In 2010 Danjuro’s son, Ebizo Ichikawa XI, was involved in a brawl in one of Tokyo’s famous nightspots. The incident has since then led to his suspension from kabuki, after bringing shame to the family name. Ebizo had to endure the sort of media circus that accompanied Hollywood scandals, and his career has yet to recover completely. Such is the doubled edged sword of inheriting the kabuki tradition, which is both an honour and a burden.

The Kabukiza is Japan’s most famous kabuki theater, located in Ginza – Tokyo’s most upscale shopping district. It will reopen in April after being rebuilt because of damage from the earthquake in 2011. But even with a new theatre, the question of whether kabuki – Japan’s best-known traditional dance-drama – can survive the passing of two of its greatest performers still remain.

Rumor: PlayStation 4 controller prototype pictured

Destructoid has published a photo of what looks to be a prototype of the PlayStation 4 controller with a PlayStation 4 developer kit in the background.

Kotaku sources have backed the outlet’s post, saying it’s “the real deal,” but “may not represent the final form of the controller.”

I wouldn’t think it does. Looks way too “this is just for development purposes” compared to Sony’s usually sexy sleek designs.

The controller seems to match the description of what’s been rumored: touch-pad in the center and repositioned PlayStation, Start, and Select buttons. Not mentioned in earlier rumors, however, is the light up-top the controller and the speaker just below the touchpad. And if you look closely, there even appears to be a microphone jack (or something similar) at the controller’s base.

Digital Foundry has tweeted another photo of the supposed controller, clearly displaying a headphone jack at its base.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Reveals Thoughts On Minami Minegishi Scandal

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was a guest on the French television program "Le Petit Journal" while visiting the country for her world tour "100%KPP WORLD TOUR 2013". During the show, the singer discussed the Minami Minegishi scandal that captured international interest.

"In the Japanese idol world, they are very strict about relationships. It's like in return for male fans' support, idols keep out of relationships and love, devoting themselves to their jobs as idols," Kyary stated when asked about the scandal.

The singer explained that she could love freely and openly since she wasn't an idol, distinguishing herself as a true artist. She criticized idols as people who act a certain way to get men to notice them.

"In my opinion, and idol's job is to suck up to men and do what they can to get their attention. What I do though is something guys will never love. What I'm doing is more like an artist than an idol," she said.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's world tour brought her to Europe during the beginning of February. The singer will be returning to Japan for more performances before traveling internationally once again.
