Twitch Site: Ken Watanabe Offered Akira's Colonel Role

The Twitch entertainment news site reported on Tuesday that Warner Brothers offered Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins, Inception) the role of Colonel in the live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga. The site also reported that Warner and Gary Oldman, the previous actor approached for the role of Colonel, had been "unable to close the deal."

I agree with everything xD

I don't have a problem with Ken Watanabe, but I do have a problem with the way he's been showing up in all the movies mentioned above as the go-to Asian guy. And now he's second choice to Gary Oldman (not that I have a problem with him either, just in context).

I don't think he even looks like the Colonel from Akira. Not that that's ever stopped anyone before.

I think I need to stop commenting on these posts. So much frustration.

At least Watanabe is a great actor. ♥
But the rest of the news/rumors surrounding Akira is still awfully worrying.

I love me some Watanabe Ken *gazes longingly at my stolen SoftBank promotional poster* but I still think this movie is all types of stank...

You stole a Softbank poster??

...that's really awesome. Do you think you could pinch the Amami Yuuki cardboard cutout that hangs out in my supermarket...?

Hmmm... Maybe it's because I finally just watched Memoirs of a Geisha - but is Watanabe becoming the "token Japanese guy in a not-really-Japanese movie to add a semblance of respectibility in midst of contraversial casting"?

I mean, you can't fault the dude for taking what jobs are offered to him but if this becomes a pattern...

I'd say he's more of the go-to dramatic manly male Asian actor. He's not as type cast as say Jet Lee or Jackie Chan (who basically have all their dramatic prowess taken away for FIGHHHTTTT).

The fact is that Watanabe speaks passable English (which is not found that often in Japanese males from Japan) and is Oscar nominated/ appeared in a number of Oscar nominated roles. He's chums with Chris Nolan and seems to have worked his way into a difficult industry that tends to be very averse to portraying Asian males as sex symbols. There have been all of eight, or something close to that, males/females of Asian descent to do that so far.

There is far more to the casting of Memoirs of a Geisha then meets the eye. The casting division did look at Japanese female leads, but they found them incredibly sub-par. Japan doesn't develop female acting as a craft. Young women are debuted, made to look pretty, sell CMs/print adds, do a few dramas with some weak acting, and then tossed away for someone new. If they take a leap and do something risky for the sake of film they are basically run over by the media (ex Rinko Kikuchi in Babel). Japanese female leads are far behind their counterparts in South Korea and Hong Kong Cinema. It's a shame and more societal pressures/values then anything.

Why not just offer Ken the role in the first place, even if he's, as many are saying, on the road to becoming the 'token Asian/Japanese guy'?
2coco 23rd-Nov-2011 03:56 pm (UTC)

i still want Jin for the role of Tetsuo..*hopeful*
sainomadelaine 23rd-Nov-2011 04:09 pm (UTC)
NOOO, STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!

I'm still hoping that someone will pull the plug on this.

I like Watanabe Ken, but still every night I pray that someone in Hollywood will recognize that he is not the only talented, English-speaking Japanese actor.
cocori 23rd-Nov-2011 04:42 pm (UTC)
Well he better take the role since he's the only Asian being offered one so far.
jennyhime 23rd-Nov-2011 06:04 pm (UTC)
And of course his role would be of the bad guy. So only Asian guy will of course be the villain in the film.
edneichon 23rd-Nov-2011 06:58 pm (UTC)
the only one who i can deal as part of the cast~
