The song sounds best when done as choral or band piece, so having AKB perform it was smart. I kind of wanted all the girls there to perform it, could you just imagine?
Though I wish they did more harmonizing with it, like you often hear when bands play it, there's this almost dischord between the harmony and the melody that I love.
The Japanese national anthem gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's haunting, but I love it. I've heard there are people opposed to it though; not exactly sure why (perhaps someone here who knows more about Japanese history can enlighten us as to why.)
Lovely rendition. It's always interesting to hear it performed without the deep male tones.
not too sure why people are opposed to it, my mum complains whenever she hears it that it's a pretty dark sounding song, but i don't think that's actually the reason haha (:
"Kimi ga yo" is originally a poem that was written in the Heian period about the Emperor. And was set to music during the late 19th century when Japan was undergoing modernazation and moving out onto the world stage. So many people, including many Japanese, don't like it because it's connection to Nationalistic Japan, the Japanese flag is also often brought under fire because it was originally a military flag.
The Lyrics of "Kimi ga Yo" (Yoinked from Wikipedia)
May your reign Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations, Until the pebbles Grow into boulders Lush with moss
Isn't also because some Japanese are opposed to the fact that the anthem is about the Emperor and not really about Japan itself? I've read that in a news article as to be the reason why some Japanese made their own versions of the anthem.
I'm not sure how Japan views their Emperor but seeing it as a constitutional monarchy, the Emperor himself is the representation of the realm that is Japan. So when you say Emperor, you're not just talking about the Emperor himself but also the nation as a whole. As long as there is an Emperor that reigns, then the realm, as it is known now, will continue to exist.
Some of the problems with the anthem is the whole Emperor=Japan analogy because of the whole mythos of the Emperor being decended from the goddess Amamterasu herself and therefore being god-like. This whole belief went right up until the end of WWII when McArthur had the Emperor himself denounce his divinity. After the Meiji Restoration there was a concious effort by the people in power to take the already exisiting idea of the Emperor being a god and bring it to the national forefront into a state sponsored form of Shinto.
It gives me weird goosebumps. It kinda reminds me of this mononoke hime track "Tatara Fumu Onnatachi". Making them sing this almost as a choir was a brilliant idea. It just sounds great <3
