Tongue-controlled Kinect interface under development in Japan

A research group at The University of Electro-Communications is developing an interface to detect tongue movement using the Kinect.

This interface is intended mainly for training the oral muscles, which include the tongue, for people who have oral motor function disorders affecting their ability to speak or swallow. The research group suggests this as a hygienic detection method, which doesn't require attaching a device to the tongue.

"First of all, the face and eyes are detected using Kinect. When both eyes are recognized, the system can estimate the position of the nose, and based on the position of the nose, movement values are obtained. The minimum movement value indicates the tip of the nose. Based on that position, the system determines the mouth area. Based on the mouth area, movement values are obtained, like before. So finally, the position of the tongue is obtained."

"One way of training the tongue is to move it left and right. We've created a shooting game based on that motion."

"When you stick your tongue out, a bullet is shot from the player in the middle. The bullet's trajectory depends on which way the tongue is pointing. That's how you aim at the targets in this game."

"The first problem is that detection isn't very precise, the system isn't very robust. So we're considering how to improve the precision. Also, we'd like to develop an interface that uses the motion of the lips as well as the tongue, so training can include a combination of mouth motions."

Just "kissing" the posters wasn't enough.

LMAO ngl I know someone who'd probably rage quit that franchise if this happens

Ah thanks! I'll check it out when I have more time. His Halo one will always be a favorite of mine!

I lost all interest in ME2 (my first and only ME) when everyone including the ship's cook started hitting on me like the new Normandy was a futuristic love boat! JRPGs may be full of androgynous and annoying characters, but I'd rather that than having a whole cast who thinks your every comment on the mission is some sort of innuendo!

OMG which Halo one? I completely gutted myself with laughter the first five times I watched his Halo Wars one!

ironically, he actually does hate all things japanese. not sure why and i could really care less since he's this guy i'm dating buddy/work buddy.

this (warning: albiest & sexist language) one actually. i remember in particular because it was featured on fandom_wank and there were, surprise surpise, a lot of upset fanboys.

lol Good one, Yahtzee! Halo Fanboys can be very sad. But hey they got Microsoft into the game console industry. There'd probably only be Sony-labelled monoliths in the industry right now if Halo fanboys hadn't continued going berserk over the franchise. Another game that is absolutely not my thing (don't like FPS.)

Besides, Yahtzee takes the pi$$ out of my fave franchises (MGS and DMC, both of which I seriously fangirl over) all the time and I just think it's hilarious. Touchy fanboys. xD

LOL I love it when people rip into things (with dignity of course). Although I heard when he made a game, he was also criticized for it and he cried. I don't know how true that is though .

Lol really? Would be pretty funny if it was true.

I come from Brisbane (where Yahtzee is based) and when I went back there, a friend of mine told me that he knew a girl who had gone out with Yahtzee and found out that he was actually a real jerk. I was like, "Wait, you didn't actually figure that out from the way he treats women and waves about his e-peen in his reviews?" My friend looked at me blankly and just repeated, "No I mean a real jerk." smh. I'm already of the strong belief that Yahtzee is a jerk on and off Zero Punctuation, but that doesn't mean I love his cynical reviews any less. I just wouldn't be silly enough to actually try to date the guy. xD
