The box office results have been released a few days later than usual due to the Golden Week in Japan. Aside from the travel and tourism industry, the Golden Week is also a very important time for the movie industry. Last weekend marked the first half of said week and flushed a lot of money into their coffers.
The big winner of the weekend was the movie "Thermae Romae", starring Abe Hiroshi, which opened on a grand scale of 304 screens nationwide. It attracted 325,690 people and grossed 432,552,300 Yen (5.39 million USD) over the weekend alone. Adding the results of Monday April 30th and Tuesday May 1st, with the latter being a movie service day, it recorded 703,767 viewers and revenue of 864,930,600 Yen (10.79 million USD). Distributor Toho is expecting well over 3 billion Yen (37.42 million USD) at the end of its run.
