"Akira Project" aims to create live-action fan trailer in response to WB screwing up everything

Considering the endless stream of crap we've heard over the years about Warner Brothers' disastrous attempts to produce a live-action adaptation of Akira, this feels like a breath of fresh air...

The Akira Project is an attempt to create a high-end, fan-made live action trailer based on the Akira manga and anime, headed up by Nguyen-Anh Nguyen. To what end? Just because. By fans, for fans.

Of course, this will require money and resources. So there's the requisite IndieGoGo campaign.

These folks are definitely true fans, and doing this out of love for Akira. The goal is to raise $7500 by September 5. If you feel inclined to pitch in a few bucks to help them out, make a pledge here. And for further information, visit the Akira Project website here. (Thanks, Victor.)

From the Akira Project website:

THE PROJECT

We are creating a live action fan trailer of the renowned manga-turned-anime “Akira”. Ever since Kodansha first published the manga in 1982, Hollywood has been interested in adapting it into a feature film. In 2002, Warner Bros acquired the rights to the film and has tried four times to make production happen. Each effort was cancelled for various technical, budgetary and casting reasons; most recently in January 2011 with the story location having been moved from Neo-Tokyo to Neo-Manhattan.

We, as fans, felt like we ought to take a shot at making our own adaptation. A chance to stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice.

THE PLAN

We’re part of a small Montreal-based film company, CineGround. We’ve got professional RED and ARRI cameras, post-production and a very talented team on board.

Over the last few months we have been busy shooting various pre-productions tests to show you what we will be able to achieve. The first glimpse of which is the first live action poster for The Akira Project, faithfully recreating the poster from the 1988 anime.

If you want to see more or want a printed copy of this poster, support us on our IndieGoGo campaign!

We are planning on shooting this fan trailer over four days in September 2012. Through our personal and financial investment, we have already secured most of our production needs in terms of crew, location and camera equipment. However we are launching our IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds to help finance the remaining needs for equipment rental, our art department, transportation and food. The shoot will take place wether we reach our goal or not, but you have the power to allow us to make this trailer be amazing. If you can’t help us financially, you can always spread the word about our project.

Also, we are currently looking for actors to take on the roles of Kaneda, Yamagata, Tetsuo and Kei. Please refer to the section Casting Call for more information.
