Koki's Nazi uniform causes controversy

Tanaka Koki, member of the popular Johnny's idol group, KAT-TUN, has been stirring up some controvery recently as his new PV "Black or White" was leaked on to the internet. So what's the big deal? Some netizens are upset that Koki is dressed in full, Nazi uniform. The full PV can be viewed here.

To be specific, Koki sports the notorious SS black uniform, which was used from 1932 to 1934 in Nazi Germany. The SS uniform was worn specifically by people who worked in concentration camps and closest to the Third Reich. The PV features him dancing in the Nazi garb, while switching between scenes of him being experimented on. The SS was also notorious for conducting horrendous "medical experiments" on many Jews in concentration camps.

Am I the only person who cannot understand a damn thing he's singing?! Is it the autotune? Like it serious sounds like some alien language.

As for the actual topic, I do not agree with the costume choice he could of done a damn Star Wars theme if he wanted to do a good vs. evil concept and the shit would of looked cooler and I'm not even a Star Wars fan.

And what is with Japan and token Black people (men)?

" vk bands have dressed up with the actual nazi-swastika attached to their costume. for years and years and years."

Yeah, this is very, very true. But, that doesn't excuse it or somehow make it ok.

They aren't wearing Nazi uniforms in this (they are wearing the Japanese WWII uniforms) but there is still Nazi symbolism, parading around stage with the Rising Sun flag, and would be extremely offensive to a lot of people. It was just a terrible performance in general. I'm not quite sure why there is such a lack of education on WWII in Japan? Is there a specific reason why they know so little (or choose not if there is such a case) and are ignorant as to why these kinds of things are offensive?

My assumption is that they wear this kind of uniform during tour or live performance, which is harder for people to be more aware about this situation. MM has been inactive for how many years? and what year is the perf above? Technology factor can also be included.

VK has their own fanbase that differs than jpop, people who have no interest with AKB48 will still get news from them but it's unlikely for people who have no interest in VK to get any info regarding them. That's all i could think,, there probably more to it.

What can I say?

That in Japan it's just an uniform? Like rosary is an accessory. That they still wear white scarf on their foreheads like kamikaze pilots?

If Koki was in American uniform, the scandal would have gone like "Koki as Japansese nationalist against American army in Japan" - more or less. Using any kind of soldier uniform is a risk, but again - they see it only for they esthetic value. Nothing more.

Life would be easier if we'd stopped searching additional meaning somewhere that it doesn't exist.

Waiting for the release date (or my copies) to watch the PV so I don't have an opinion at the moment.

Off topic here but has my lovely Daigo and Breakerz ever made it into Arama because of this video:

If so, Can someone please link me to it, if not, then ignore me.

I am getting mixed feelings. I do understand the concept of the PV, however the uniform was a littttttle bit much on the accurate side. I guess that's what the concept of the PV was supposed to be? basically referring back to what happened during the Nazi era, but giving it a little bit of a modern 'this is how we stand up to the man' idea

dorkylifestyle 9th-Sep-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
this whole PV could've been different and the scandal could have been avoided if they cared to create a totally new soldier outfit for Koki, just throw some sparkles there and glitter over there too and bam! you get a cool JE uniform nothing to do with Nazi but still emphasizing that is is a bad character and we'd still get the idea that is good vs evil... they might have been too lazy to come up with something new and just decided to copy it, and by them I mean everyone who was involved in the process of making this PV.

Leaving controversy behind...
I wish there was more air time for white Koki's dancing rather than showing robotic-black koki dance moves for almost the entire PV, at least the engrish made me LOL x)

seelenlicht 10th-Sep-2012 06:48 am (UTC)
And this is the problem: This pv isn't scandalous AT ALL for the Japanese population.
For us: yes but not for Japanese who used concepts like this in different pvs since ages.

come back into this post and some of the comments here are just making me questioning their mentality: get your heads out of Johnny's ass for once and think for a change.

I'm gonna be honest here...I have no idea what the hell is going on. Honestly. Half of the stuff that was just discussed here are not even in the American history books and half of the stuff I just read I wish I didn't. Like, Nazis doing experiments on humans during WWII. They don't teach that, and if they do, it's really desensitized. It's not really talked about. What I'm saying is I never knew that.

Otherwise, Bad concept. Bad video. What's with the black guy? Really? Seriously? He has nothing to do with the story. I'm confused.

45s 10th-Sep-2012 02:31 am (UTC)
there's a bunch of ways one can convey a fight between good and evil. not surprised that the director of this video went with the laziest and most offensive concept. what a waste of time, effort, and money.

small aside but crying real tears for that random black guy as he now has "random black guy in a nazi themed music video" on his resume :-/

Yeah I don't think idols (and their company) really try very hard.....
