Noriko Sakai to make comeback in December

Three years after she was arrested for drugs, actress-singer Noriko Sakai, 41, will return to showbiz in December.

Sakai, who is popularly known as “Nori-P,” was convicted of drug use in 2009 and received a suspended sentence, which expires at the end of November.

Sakai will return to the stage as the main character in a story about the Sengoku era, Sports Nippon reported.

The last time Sakai appeared in the theater as a main character was back in 1988 when she was the heroine of a musical.

what does 'suspended' sentence mean? and why does it expire? she didn't get any jail time?

i think it means she's free unless she commits the same crime again within the 3 years then she'd go to jail. And the sentence expires after 3 years.

ok so she never really did jail time then. she just have to be on her BEST behavior for 3 years. ok thanks

It's sort of a probationary period. The judge is basically delaying her serving her sentence and giving her a form of probation instead. She just has to fulfill her requirements for it and not break the law while she's on it.

is this normal in japanese cases? drug offense isn't exactly light you know. but she is in public spotlight so it's easier to keep track of her , i guess. japan really saves money this way, no tax to cover incarceration.

That's pretty much why. The same thing happened to Tetsuya Komuro when he was convicted for fraud. He never went to jail but had a suspended sentence. Saves money and space in jail for those who commit violent crimes.

This is not on topic but..I am so irritated (actually, jealous) about Japanese celebrities never looking their age. I mean, she looks mid-20 to me!!

41? wow she still looks so young tho.

I always thought she was in jail cos Japan was so strict on drug-related cases.

I don't know her, but I hope that she can overcome it and be an example that you can recover from bad choices (and not be forever an outcast because of them).
