China, S Korea criticize Hashimoto over comfort women comments

China and South Korea on Tuesday criticized Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto’s comments on comfort women.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it saw the comments as further evidence of a rightward drift in Japanese politics under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“We are appalled and indignant about the Japanese politician’s comments boldly challenging humanity and historical justice,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing. “The way they treat the past will determine the way Japan walks toward the future. On what choice Japan will make, the Asian neighbors and the international community will wait and see.”

Asked about a photo of Abe posing in a fighter jet with the number 731 — the number of a notorious, secret Japanese unit that performed chemical and biological experiments on Chinese in World War II — Hong again urged Japan not to whitewash history so as to improve relations with countries that suffered under Japanese occupation.

“There is a mountain of definitive iron-hard evidence for the crimes they committed in the Second World War. We hope Japan will face and contemplate their history of aggression and treat it correctly,” Hong said.

Abe posed, thumbs up, in the aircraft during a weekend visit to Miyagi Prefecture.

Meanwhile, in Seoul, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment over what it called a senior Japanese official’s serious lack of historical understanding and respect for women’s rights. It asked Japan’s leaders to reflect on their country’s imperial past, including grave human rights violations, and correct anachronistic historical views.

I didn't know Japan experimented on people in WW2. To be fair, when I took history class it was all about the holocaust and Germany. Not much was taught on about Japan during that time.

If you can stomach it, there's a well-known book about it called Unit 731.

I will do my best to find this book and read it, or wiki it or something.
I had to read 'The Devil's Arithmetic" and when I got to the end and found out that the narrator was the girl in the book and she died in the gas chamber and technically this book was written by a ghost...I threw it across the room and vowed never again. Traumatized me for life.

Thank you for giving me the title of the book. I wonder who had the brilliant idea to give that number to a plane. It's like not naming your kid Adolf/Hitler.

There really is a terrible rightward nationalist shift in Japanese politics. I remember when Abe got elected and he wanted to "revisit" Japan's apology. Luckily he seemed to have backed down on that one.

When economy goes down, nationalism goes up. It was bad during the bubble years but is getting worse ugh

this is so true, it can be applied to any where, I feel like America took a huge step back the past few years

I'm curious as to why that is personally.

Tho i feel like it was more folks criticizing the government for everything. Then again, they do that all the time anyway.

Although i do know issues like immigration become much more debated when things are in the tubes.

I think it has a lot to do with insecurity caused by the economic downturn.

People who feel that their livelihoods are being threatened will be likely to lash out at anyone or anything that they feel is adding to the threat, and unfortunately in the states we also tend to get a lot of rhetoric in the media about "illegals" taking away jobs from "hard-working" Americans.

I'm curious as to why that is personally.

My guess is cuz the natural response is "something worked before but isn't working now" and "what made it work before?"

unit 731 had quite the interesting report on biological warfare. At least the US got something good out of that

And rightfully so.
