The Japanese ‘net slang for laughter has made it into the Sanseido Japanese Dictionary.. and it’s causing a stir.

The ubiquitous “w” short for “warai” which means “laugh” in Japanese has been used on Japanese forums and bulletin boards for ages and has recently been christened an official word. Similar to LOL in the west the amount of W’s in a message denote just how funny a netizen finds a particular subject with www being only mildly funny but wwwwww being really funny.

The latest entry to the Seventh Edition to the Senseido Japanese Dictionary reads:

■ ダブリュー[W](名)(1)(2)(3)省略(4)〔←warai=笑い〕〔俗〕〔インターネットで〕(あざ)笑うことをあらわす文字。「まさかwww」(以下略)
